I have no issues with Quebec demanding respect and wanting to preserve culture....when new comers arrive in Canada we are forced "political" to respect there culture . There's nothing wrong with that. You can't police this but there has to be respect and outling a bill helps with that. There was a recent issue with a liberal member running for new leader position and he disrespected the the french language. In Toronto in the schools they teach you wrong information on Canada's heritage. Its like Canada has been erased. That said at the end of the day if Canadians are forced to respect newcomers ways etc etc then they need to provide the same respect. Lets all get along.

I'm with you on this. I'm a US american that fell in love with Quebec City and the french/european culture that exists and accepted me for who I was when I visited - just a few weeks ago. And I've been researching on how to immigrate to Quebec City , as I have friends and made new friends that live there and love their lives. However, since I've looked into this from the only potential angle (getting a regular working visa), it seems that Quebec continues to push against the norm, and make immigration for those like me that are skilled workers and want to integrate into the Quebec (French) language and culture. I WANT to make Quebec City my home. I WANT to contribute to their economy. I WANT to get better with my French language. I WANT to become a Quebec City local. But Quebec officials continue to push their hate forward, rather than making acceptable terms to preserving their heritage, culture and language. All of which I fell in love with in January 2025 when I was there. The people and culture are all beautiful and happy. Yet the government is old and grumpy. GROW TF UP QUEBEC!!

The irony is that these people would never afford you this freedom if this roles were reversed. If they had the ability they might even feel emboldened enough to try taking your cultural freedom from you! Supporting their cultural freedoms is not something they would offer back simply because we did. Their religions/culture are of a different kind built of different pillars and motivations.

Why is it that when Canada or a province wants to uphold their culture it xenophobic? Why do Canadians need to always adapt to others.. We are supposed to be a melting pot that is built on Canadian values first, which historically was the reason people immigrated here. Not to be (insert whatever country name) 2.0. Not everyones countries beliefs are good to integrate... Sad that this has to be said, because it's quite obvious. Plane and simple that you come here, there has to be some effort to adapt to the rest of the country.

So what exactly are Canadian values? I mean .. what do you see as Canadian values? Most countries have the same values as "Canadian Values". My parents moved here from England many many years ago and we have English and Italian background .. We uphold both sets of values. That doesn't make us any less Canadian. Plus exactly what was said .. how are they going to uphold their stupid law? Have a head count to all those that participate in their National Day - St Jean. I've lived in Quebec unfortunately for over 40 years and have never and WILL never participate in anything Quebec based. Canada YES - 100% ... Quebec No Way. When it rains on St Jean .. I actually am super happy ... they can celebrate their National day in the rain for all I care. Also, he is targeting 1 group of people and 1 group only so yes it's Xenophobic ... same as no matter how many Anglophones speak French .. they are never never happy. Montreal is a melting pot of so many cultures and that is what makes this city unique .. Quebec just tries to cause chaos here whenever they can - with all their sketchy laws. No immigrant is trying to turn CANADA into their Country 2.0 ... they are just trying to make a living and uphold their own cultures in the process - that doesn't make them any less Canadian either.

@@tulip19710226 "When it rains on St Jean .. I actually am super happy " You do realize the irony here. You're advocating for people who want to be respected, yet showcase happiness when a provincial celebration gets rained on for some odd reason. Yikes.. maybe think about moving after 40 years cause you do not seem like a happy person

The way multiculturalism is practiced in Canada doesn’t work and never will. When you invite thousands of people from completely different backgrounds and don’t force them to adapt it will become a disaster eventually.

A lot of jobs that support Canadians in Quebec rely on the immigration process. I agree we need to focus on our country, not the third world but Immigration can’t just completely stop and we can simultaneously preserve French Canadian culture

To integrate to the local community, how come it can be xenophobic ??? It's hard to understand the news nowadays, completely out of touch.

She said the assumption that immigrants lack the values that Québec uphold is xenophobic. The ASSUMPTION. Also, it’s the opinion of the person being interviewed, not the news outlet itself. Perhaps, try to understand what you are commenting.

The bill comes as Quebec Premier François Legault's government prepares to further strengthen secularism rules in Quebec. Last fall, a government report made waves with findings about a group of teachers at Bedford school in Montreal, many of North African descent, who had allegedly created a toxic culture and imposed their own values on students. Other allegations quickly surfaced of Muslim religious practices emerging in classrooms, and the government launched investigations of 17 schools. Roberge said he has been working on the integration bill for the past 18 months, but said the incidents at Bedford school highlighted the need for new legislation. "Obviously, there are people who arrived here who were not interested in common values," he said.

I can understand why Quebec is doing this. It’s not normal for people from other countries just to make demands to allow them to fallow their laws and religious beliefs in regular schools, work force and public living spaces. If you leave your country but still want to fallow their laws, religious beliefs and customs then why leave in the first place. Go somewhere who supports your way of thinking and living.

This new law is all about optics. I've lived in Quebec most of my life and am fully bilingual. The issue is francophones are concerned about increasing bilingualism, especially in urban locations (greater Montreal). The Quebec government has no idea how to deal with this situation, many politicians privately acknowledge it isn't even a problem as long as people can speak French. The law is designed to appease old stock francophones who live in Quebec's regions and is another example of the growing urban/rural divide.

As someone originally from out of province now settled in Quebec, I truly believe they keep it this way to gatekeep certain benefits from the greater Canadian population. It’s one of the last semi affordable places to live in Canada, I don’t blame them for feeling concerned, with everything happening in the US and our rapidly expanding population, they need to enforce these things before it is too late. Signing a document to honour French Canadian culture doesn’t feel like a lot to ask.
