FUN FACT (because i read the book when i was in 8th grade and watching this is bringing back horrible memories), in the book Wanda's new body is a *_sixteen year old_* redhead and she makes the conscious decision to lie about it when Ian is visibly uncomfortable with how young she looks. It didn't even click in my mind as a kid that they're supposed to be in their thirties when I first read that... also the enemy lady was so pissed off because her host body's personality was comically annoying and never shut up and it gave her constant headaches.

My favorite part of movies is when people cut themselves intentionally with knives and it only sorta hurts. Do you know how fucking painful cutting yourself that slowly is? We have evolved a nervous system over millions of years designed to stop you from doing exactly that! The pain would be excruciating! It would hurt like a bitch for hours. You would probably pass out shortly after breaking the skin. But nope! The look on her face is less self-torture, more this-is-totes-gonna-ruin-my-make-up.
@TheBlarggle10 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but after slicing open her arm(with ease), she one-hands the knife across her FACE. Okay, so I can sorta buy that someone would be able to effortlessly cut one of their arms for the "right purpose". I'm saying I'll buy it, but I'm still skeptical about how it'd really play out. But to be able to slice a 2 inch gash RIGHT ABOVE YOUR EYE.... WITHOUT SO MUCH AS FLINCHING?!?! Like... You'd think actors would understand the entire spectrum of human emotion and reaction. Particularly very easy ones to gauge and react to. Such as physical pain. Not a very "deep" or complex feeling to react to appropriately. That coupled with the point you made about how we, as a living being with a complex nervous system, are "wired" to react a certain way to our skin being ripped open made that entire scene fucking awful. While watching her slice her arm open I was thinking "Um. Okay, why is she reacting as if she were watching a bug crawl across her arm?" And then, she slices her face with out so much as a gasp or flinch? Fucking hell, and this movie was supposed to be about "The Human Condition"? Try understanding even the most basic aspect of the human condition and get back to me, Ms. Meyers.

All these tween female protagonist bestselling books are the exact same goddamn thing. - There are two factions that are unfriendly with each other but not fully at war. - The female protagonist's mere presence stirs things up enough that full blown war erupts between the two factions. - There are two guys she enjoys stringing along as they fight over her. - The two factions fight over her since her super specialness is somehow key to the overall conflict. - The female protagonist, when you break the plot down, NEVER ACTUALLY DOES ANYTHING. She mostly passively sits by and lets the players of both factions fight it out over her (yes, even The Hunger Games). The only thing she does is eventually pick one of the love interest guys at the end. Conclusion: a girl's ultimate fantasy is being super special and the center of attention without having to actually do anything as she strings guys along watching everyone fight over her. In short, it's every tween girl's fantasy to be Helen of Troy. (yes people, I know Katass killed the guy who killed the little girl. Reflexively killing ONE person who just murdered a small child in cold blood does not make an active protagonist in a Battle Royale movie. She spends the entire rest of the series letting everyone else do the dirty work for her so she can claim the moral highground, while actively giving the regime what it wants as long as it means she gets to wear a fancy dress and be on TV).

What really gets me though is that everyone says The Hunger Games is the best because Katniss is a "badass", but she never does anything! She's barely any more proactive than Bella. She never kills anyone in the first Hunger Games. The killing is all done by other contestants or the wildlife (shooting one guy to put him out of his misery as he's torn apart by animals doesn't count). Hell, she doesn't even kill the deer she's hunting in the opening! That way she gets to have the moral highground by not killing anyone, but still win the game. In the sequels, everyone else does the fighting and dying but she gets all the credit. And she can't even stay alive on her own in the game without relying on charming men into giving her gifts. Because even a "badass" woman is all about being a tv star and winning popularity contests by wearing the most fabulous designer gowns! I'd say it's worse than Twilight because at least Twilight is recognized as pure romance novel emotional porn. Hunger Games is the worst kind of fraudulent female empowerment and women are eating it up.

The one good call the director made was not to adapt the real ending, which is practically a scene from a horror movie. They actually canvas a suburban neighborhood and kidnap a teenage girl that's already possessed to use as Wanda's new body. They abduct her, extract the alien inside her, dispose it and then insert Wanda, with no thought as to whether the original personality could be salvaged like Melanie or if the alien even deserved to be kidnapped and murdered just so Wanda could have sexy times in a new body. That's just one of the many classic Stephanie Meyer scenes that encapsulate her horrifying moral beliefs that tell me that I would probably strangle her if I knew her in person.

TackyRackyComixNEO Yup, that's basically the recurrent phrase in my head when I read that part. It actually gets worse when you remember that these aliens generally have no idea that humans are sentient and they assume the state of the body they inhabit. So this alien they kidnapped and murdered was for all intents and purposes...a teenage girl...that they kidnapped and murdered...while they were grinning the whole time at how "romantic" this all was. For Stephenie Meyer if there aint chloroform then there aint no love story! Oh, bonus fact, they chose this girl because she was pretty enough. Wanda and her nameless boyfriend must have the very best after all.

Jaime Stark The more shallow and the creepier the undertones the better!
@armoredplacoderm8 жыл бұрын
Okay, you got a few key details wrong. They actually did wait to see if the personality would revive itself in the book. Yes, she was targeted, but it's made clear in the book that they did wait to see if she would revive - particularly because this is AFTER they had several other humans revive after having the alien souls removed. Wanda's new body was a vegetable without an alien, so they put Wanda inside her. It was still creepy, but not nearly what you described. They also didn't "murder" the alien. They didn't harm it in any way. They sent it to another planet. (Which comes with it's own moral problems, since she would be re-implanted into another host) So in short, no, that was not the original ending, that was your mischaracterization of the original ending, and the film ending is actually more accurate to the book then your description, it just leaves out some key points, whereas you just made them up.

I find that Stephanie Meyer keeps stumbling upon good ideas but then ruins them with her absolute lack of understand of how human beings work. Like Twilight, a mortal falls in love with an immortal. Huge potential ruined with teen drama and oversimplification of the issues raised. The Host is the same. There is potential to explore this concept indepth but Meyer just glances over the implications and makes it about teen drama. Again. If she ever did try to focus just on teen drama she'd find a way to get that wrong too.

@BigLundi8 жыл бұрын
You know what's funny is that watching this movie, the only question I have is like, "Was this not intended to be a science fiction movie?" Because like, the point of a science fiction world, to my understanding, is to explore the world and how it works through the perspective of particular characters used to frame the world that they're in. In yet most of the focus on this is less to do with exploring how the world works and the like, how they developed their ridiculously powerful all wound healing febreeze medicine, space travel without the use of any seemingly usable appendages(spider legs put space ships together...fucking how? Not to mention all the other things that could be talked about in how this alien society apparently works and how they know the things they do and to what extent they are in fact Utopian, and how far their technology goes. NOPE, none of that shit's necessary, we've got a weird romance story to tell. So when I see Ms. Meyer going, "It's a science fiction movie for people who hate science fiction" I can only conclude that what she means by this is "It's a science fiction movie for people who don't give a shit about world building". I seriously doubt the notion that anyone categorically hates any one genre of movies on principle, at least in the literal sense. I think what tends to happen there is that a person merely doesn't experience any movies in that genre that are done well, and as such just leave it be and decide not to partake in future endeavors on that front, which is understandable, yes, but that doesn't mean that you bastardize a genre and turn it into something it's not just to draw in an audience that wouldn't be into that genre in the first place. It's like if I were to make a rap song for people who hate rap music, and to do so, I made a fucking alternative rock song. If I get a fan base for that song, that doesn't make them all of a sudden like rap music, or even motivate them to expand their musical repertoire, that makes them like an alternative rock song I called a rap song. Stupid.

bloodrunsclear I don't think anyone knows that. But, even funnier, some versions of the book include as bonus material a playlist written by Stepehnie Meyer herself that consists mostly of Linkin Park (the main one I remember being Papercut, which was supposed to fit the scene when Wanderer discovers that Melanie is still in her mind) and All American Reject songs, that don't fit the story or the tone at all, or songs that are probably only in there because they have words like "body" or "soul" somewhere in the lyrics. One even had "soul" in the title, if I remember it correctly, and nothing else in common with the story. So the franchise has a history with unfitting music.
