For entertainment, she only watches Korean programming. She never watches TV or movies with me... except for your videos. I've been watching since the first time you tried grilled cheese sandwiches. Recently, when I was watching the first video on your U.S. RV tour, she happened to see it and stopped and asked what I was watching. I told her a little bit about your channel. Intrigued, she sat down and watched with me. Now she watches every episode with me, and asks me every day if there is a new one. We both thoroughly enjoy them. Thank you for doing what you do. It brought my wife and I just a little bit closer than we already were.

I loved seeing you try the bread bowl clam chowder. It is totally nostalgic. Would love to see you guys go try it on a wharf. The one where I grew up you would walk down the wharf and get a free sample from each restaurant (maybe 5-7 samples) then go back to your favorite and get it in the bread bowl, each place tasted different for whatever preference you have. The best part is when you have finished the chowder, it has had time to soak the inside of the bread bowl and you rip that up. The sour dough soaked with that creamy chowder is SO good… yum, really brings me back. (queue scene of eating this on the end of the wharf watching the otters, the sunbathing seals, the calm lap of the waves and seagulls calling, and the crisp sea air in your face)

@elkins44068 күн бұрын
@@mescko Dungeness crab is only in season from November-December to April-June, depending on specific yearly conditions. I didn't catch when these folks were in Oregon, but there'd be little point in ordering it out of season. It probably wouldn't even appear on the menu at better restaurants, and ordering it at those places that do keep it on the menu year 'round, you'd still only be getting it frozen. Not much point in that. I agree, though, that it's spectacular in season.

Marionberry is a cross breed of blackberry that was invented at Oregon State University in Corvallis in 1945. It really only grows in Oregon's climate. There is a very close hybrid that was created later using the boysenberry from Australia (Silvanberry) that has very similar qualities but can live in a much wider climate area. I believe you should be able to get and grow the Silvanberry in NZ as they love that costal temperate band.

I was lucky enough to live in Oregon during the fall when the marionberries ripened. There's a little town on the coast called Garibaldi and I'd go there almost every weekend to pick marionberries and go crabbing on their amazing pier. You can rent the crab traps there and catch SO much fresh dungeoness crab for dinner. Marionberries grew wild along the train tracks and they were so prevalent, my sister and I had marionberry fights--slinging the berries at each other; the results were similar to paintball and we'd both be 75% purple at the end! I wish I could say we were children when we did this but we were mid/late 20s. :D

Marionberry is indeed an Oregon specialty. It is a blackberry cultivar developed at Oregon State University, and is widely grown here. There is a “native” blackberry that is not actually a native plant, but got here somehow and is VERY invasive, birds eat them and spread the seeds. Marionberry was developed from them, but are a much larger berry, about the size of the last joint of the thumb. You can use them like any other berry, as in pies, jams, syrups, etc. Glad you enjoyed them! I follow you closely, and am happy you are enjoying Oregon. To me the climate (at least on the western side of the state) is very similar to NZ. Got to spend 6 weeks in NZ a few years ago, 3 weeks on each island.

Sourdough bread bowls are awesome! My husband was born in Marion county in Oregon which is where the Marion berries originated. Oregon has the best berries. We have the perfect climate for them. Corbett Oregon has the absolutely best blueberries because of their ice storms in the winter. You should try some of the other blackberries too besides the Marion berries. The English blackberries which are invasive are nonetheless still one of the sweetest most mind blowing flavors if you can pick them straight off the bramble when they are sun warmed and so ripe that they can’t survive transport. The really good ones aren’t sold in stores but can be picked or found at farmers markets or farm stands because you have to eat or freeze or use them the day they are picked. We have so many amazing berries here. One year I picked and froze some berries from the spring through fall of all the varieties in our forest and garden and in the end made out of this world 14 berry jam. If you can stock up on berry jam or frozen berries while in the Pacific Northwest I highly suggest it. ❤

If you ever get a chance to try soft shell crab it's delicious. The crab are harvested right after they've molted, so their new shell is soft, as in the name. If you put them on a grill zyou can just eat it, shell & all.

My favorite seafood has always been lobster bisque.

Make it with Dungeness crab and level up - it's better than lobster IMO.

I did a Google search and apparently Clam chowder is available in NZ. America's Test kitchen is a fabulous show with the best recipes.

I moved to Michigan from the Oregon coast, but I still order Marionberry every holidays from Oregon (it is a specialized blackberry)

If you guys ever come back to the States Oregon is definitely somewhere you absolutely have to revisit. The Salem area is the capital and there’s such a rich history from the manifest destiny era and things to just do and see.

The west coast, Gulf coast and east coast are known for the best, and freshest, seafood! If you like seafood, we are blessed here in the United States. Seafood! I see food, I eat it! Lol I have to say, seafood is the bomb! Not a winter goes by when I don't make my fish chowder (halibut, haddock, shrimp, taters, onions & corn on the cob, simmered for hours in a shrimp stock) and my clam chowder. And no summer is complete without my family's clam bake and my maple smoked salmon, brushed with maple syrup while smoking for 3 hrs, low & slow. And for my older daughter's and older son in law's birthdays (within a week of each other) they usually always choose surf & turf (lobster tail and ribeye steaks).

I'm a fairly new subscriber and a brand new full-time RVer. Love the video and look forward to your videos visiting my beloved state. As a matter of fact I was watching this while staying in Garibaldi near Tillamook. Enjoy the rest of your trip and safe travels!

For me clam chowder is my go to soup. Fried catfish, or walleye, best fish I know of.

This Family Vacay makes me irrationally happy... God Bless You NZ Family!.. Can't wait for the next video. I mentioned it before , I SOOOO want you to do a similar RV trip here in Canada. Either an East Coast run (Toronto --> P.E.I. or Newfoundland) or a West Coast Run (Calgary ---> Northern BC....Maybe even Yukon!).

So you'll do very well making a Chowder of New Zealand Tuatua clams. They will be very similar. Scallops and Mussels are a good substitute you should be able to find all over NZ. You can also do a similar recipe with crawfish meat, or a very mild but firm fish (Gurnard or Cod for example). The results will be very close. Also there is another option. The cost is high, but many places will freeze pack and ship (or know a place that will) clam chowder to you in NZ. Clam chowder is something that frozen reheats almost exactly like fresh.

Never had fish tacos until I moved to the west coast in the 90s. They are delicious with ranch and lime juice, but also with cole slaw. Who knew? Well, people on the west coast knew.
