Shoulder in - Legs and shoulders stay the same position of the pelvis changes. Leg yield - more pronounced weight to the inside. Traver - more pronounced weight to inside, outside leg bent back a little but not on, allowing the ribcage to bend a bit more. Oh my goodness i can't absorb any more at the moment. Going to have to watch this several times to get my head round it. I can see how once you've understood the feeling, the reaction and the outcome your ability to achieve is within your grasp. Brilliant video. I'm so miffed my riding years have past but what a blessing to all those still able to ride. You little star Alicia.⭐

So here’s what I love about Alicia’s teaching: she teaches in a way I can actually remember and apply when I’m riding. Banana ✅ Equal weight in both feet ✅ 80 feet 20 seat ✅ Every single time I ride now, I use these tips. Now travers-I feel like I have a better feel for what it should look like after watching this video. And Renvers!! Every time I think of doing renvers I have to look at my phone to remember what it looks like 😂 Now I won’t have to-I’m just going to take my shoulder in and reverse the bend. Such an easy way to remember it. Absolutely love your videos. I learn so much. ❤️

Thanks Wessel for being such a good boy so Alicia can show her seat. Really mind blown again. It became so clear on where to sit but also where to hold your outside leg in the travers. I have to confess I sometimes have the feeling to hold the horse in a position during the travers. So gonna try to not hold the horse during my next lesson. It will really help with progress in the lateral work. Thanks!!!!!!

You are a gem, Alicia! This is so perfectly timed - I’m so bad at lateral work. My biggest takeaway: using bum alignment to control the rib cage rather than changing weight in feet. The biggest eye opener: 80-20 rule. I’ve definitely been a sack-o-potatoes with putting too much weight into saddle. I think it’s much easier to control pelvis position when you’re light in your seat. Can’t wait to try 80-20 during my ride tonight. Practicing 80-20 on my yoga ball now and shifting pelvis while keeping weight in feet the same!

So, at "shoulder in" we have to move slightly to the inside but the weight in the stirrups remains the same. My coach has also told me that I should put 80% of my weight on my stirrups and my seat should be independent and I believe that this is more secure as well. (the example with the pony helped!) And now I can understand the difference between a leg yield and a shoulder in. Thank you for the information!

The 80/20 rule has been the biggest game changer for me. Years of being told to sit deep in the saddle made me ride with a very heavy seat and clamped on thighs. These moves are so far beyond me, BUT thinking about weight distribution and my seat bones like this is exactly what I needed right now. My lesson horse has taken to spiraling in and refusing to go on the rail about halfway through my lessons, so I know my body is getting twisted as I get tired, even though I can’t feel it. I’ve identified that when I try to push with my inside leg, I’m actually lifting that seat bone and pushing my weight into my outside stirrup/seat bone, so my seat is saying go in while my reins are saying go out-super frustrating for both of us. I think focusing on the 80/20 rule is going to help me keep straighter this weekend. Thanks again!

I have always taught both horses and students shoulder fore/shoulder in/travers/renvers as a biomechanical aid where everything is more or less automatic: everything starts from a very small turn or advance from the hips, no leaning or tipping allowed, shoulders and hands follow the hips and position the forehand. Your body position naturally encourages the horse to move the way you want without resistance and without a large cognitive load on the rider (ie, the rider overthinking and being unable to put the whole picture together when aids are broken down into too many steps). I have found that I can teach young horses as well as beginner riders, neither of which has ever done the lateral positions, to successfully perform these movements in just a few ssssions. The important thing is to sit straight, no leaning or tipping, or as you put it, being even in both stirrups, and also not to overdo the hip movement- horses are very sensitive and do feel the small movement in your hip and overdoing the aids and turning yourself into a pretzel will not make the aid more effective and may actually end up giving the horse a message you didnt intend..

So wonderful & very helpful to see the tracks, see the line of the horse, see the rider's seat & the movement of rib cage. Now let's see how possible it is to get these moves translated into a reality with my unschooled horse! One thing she does do well is move off the leg. I have learned so much from this video which has been a light bulb moment ; the demo on weight aids has clearly been a hit with fellow subscribers and I am no exception.Why has nobody else thought of illustrating the shoulder in and-leg yield like you . Thanks for this I have tried the weighting of the inside seat bone and pelvis for shoulder in and leg yield it was definitely making a huge difference to my our progress.The learning I took from the renver demo was the slight outside weighting of my pelvis and the hovering outside leg but tapping /touching not pressing on which was my previous error.I have to practice guys because maintaining straight even shoulders and upper body and the 80/20 weight in my feet is gonna keep us busy. Doesn’t she motivate you to try that’s what I like ;Alicia has demystified some of these challenging movements.I can achieve counter canter and I now understand which is the leading leg .Please keep these lessons coming. Thanks again I know I will never get bored during my retirement

Biggest takeaway is consciously returning leg to neutral. Seat positioning definitely reflects necessity of independent seat so rest of position remains unaffected. Regarding 80/20 rule I am thinking perhaps it is a lot like riding through a line from last weeks video - weight *through* the stirrup/feet to the ground.

Oh I really Iove this video. Your incredible info is something I’m going to have to listen to a number of times as there’s SO much to take in and practice. Today I had a go of the leg yield and travers. Once I get my OTTB warm and supple, it’s amazing how keeping the weight even in the feet helps me use my seat better. It’s easier to get the subtlety of the movement. I can’t tell you how much the 80% feet and 20% seat has changed my riding and how my horse is going. I’m moving with my horse not against him! Ahhhhhmazing! Thank you!!! I feel like I need to film myself do the travers and leg yield, as it feels correct, but I might not actually be doing it correctly!!! I love seeing the actual positions of where your body should be in relation to the horse at a standstill. Seeing it in motion is harder to catch, especially when the body position change is minimal. Will definitely be using this in my training of my super green filly (we just got off the lead line and now working on steering while keeping impulsion. @@YourRidingSuccess Hi, just a question. Is it possible for you to explain the aids to make a square in trot. This excercise is to learn the horse to take the shoulder when turning. I hope that you understand my question.
@YourRidingSuccess2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brenda! So if its an exercise where its just a square with corners its important to only ride a square with the size corners that the horse can balance in and you just need to ride the corners the same as you would ride through the corners in the arena, and focus on keeping the horse on the train tracks and balanced x

Another A-MA-ZING training session thank you ! the BANANA is EVERYTHING ! who knew a piece of fruit could change our riding lives so much ! i now have banana socks as my competition socks :)) Alicia's advice wants to make me rush out and ride and improve things ! a great take away in this video is the outside leg placement and level of pressure or actually lack of it. I presently cannot ride as the devastating floods in KZN South Africa have literally washed away the road to my horses' yard so these videos are a great inspiration

This video is awesome 👌 👏 👍! You really brake everything down. I will watch it again and again and try it on my horse until I get it. My horse is young and it is super important that I properly use my body, apply correct weight and correct muscles to teach her. It is very hard without exact guidance. Your videos provide that guidance and explanation in details . I love it! Thank you!

Great video! My biggest takeaway was the 80/20. I've tried thinking "feet on the ground" but I find that tough for me to do. The "moving your seat to create space" was pretty cool as well. Thank you for this video!

I really liked how you did this in halt- made it easier to see as you’re talking through. So subtle but huge difference. Appreciate the detailed explanation of shoulder-in, traver, renver, and counter counter. I haven’t started doing all these yet, only started shoulder in recently, but love the knowledge. Wessel did such a great job- such a good boy!

It is an ongoing change for me to feel I am ‘riding correctly’ when I have the most weight in my stirrups. When I was starting out we were taught that you shouldn’t need your stirrups and that has impacted the way I have ridden.
@YourRidingSuccess2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nadia! Thanks so much for tuning in! In theory even without stirrups you can still apply the 80-20 rule as you aren't jamming your weight into the stirrups, like when you are standing it doesn't feel like you are pushing against the ground. It should feel more like instead you are "standing" on the ground so that the horse is removed you would land on your feet x

Thank you so much for this!! I’ve been struggling with my horse to make what I’m asking clearer for him and this helps 100%!! Also it was so interesting to hear the 80%/20% since everyone focuses so much on seat you forget where most your weight should be!
