my summary 📖✏ 1. *Competition* - your peers are no longer your competition in vet school. You've all made it in and are all in this together. 2. *Imposter Syndrome* - you will feel undeserving at times, questioning whether you deserve to be here. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Everyone feels this way - go back and read your acceptance letter to remind yourself of your success and worth. 3. *Balance* - play sports, do things outside of vet school. 4. *Support System* - find people who you can count and rely to support you through the tough times in vet school. 5. *Enjoy every day* - try to find little bright things in each day to focus on the good parts of vet school. Remind yourself of WHY you chose this profession in the first place. Embrace failure and move forward.

I had kids at an early age so I spent my days raising them. But now that I'm working at the animal hospital it had sparked my interest into becoming a vet instead. I get to participate in surgeries and be very hands on, it is truly amazing the work vetanerians do. I'm just afraid of going back to school because I haven't been in school since I graduated. I have long ways to go before even applying to vet school. But watching your video made me feel like it's Def worth it. So Thank-you. And of course going to work everyday for the health of animals and saving them is so rewarding .

@@yourvetamanda Thanks so much :) I love that you call it a journey, because it's so much more than just being accepted and going to school. Thats how I look at it too, It's a path to take in life. I try not to look at how far I have to go but focusing on just what the next stepping stone is and as best I can enjoying where I am. I ended up going into film right out of high school, graduated 3 years of that specializing in VFX and while I did enjoy it it, just never felt right. The prospects of sitting in front of a computer the rest of my life when I really wanted to be out in the world making some kind of difference. I was always drawn back to animals. I'm really interested in genetics and nutrition (I have a whole rant about it that I'll spare you from :') lol) I just feel like diet is so important to the health of our animals and a lot of the time theres not a big focus on it (especially for smaller pets, rodents, birds etc) And I know this is just me being starry eyed but I wish I could bring changes to the industry somehow to make bringing smaller animals to the vet more of an affordable and accepted practice. I don't know how yet but I'll figure it out XP. My love of animals extends to everything though, Large, small, wild, domestic. Covid has unfortunately put a pause on my volunteering for now but I do have positions in my local wildlife centre and humane society and I'm hoping when things go back to normal I'll be able to get back into volunteering at a riding program for riders with disabilities, I use to volunteer for in high school. I'm a horse girl who never got to be a proper horse girl lol XD. I feel like this is already long enough i'm just rambling but I've gone to visit Guelph twice now and I just love it there, I fell in love with the school and everyone was so kind and the neighbourhoods still had a bit of hustle and bustle but there was just an air of peacefulness. I think one of the more major things that worry me related getting old is I one day want kids. I want a family as much as I want to become a vet and I just don't know how to fit it all in x.x lol. I requested to follow you on twitter :) (I have the parrot in my profile picture) And good luck for the next years of vet school and everything beyond that. I hope you're able to continue succeeding in everything you set out to do

I did well on the GRE and got a MSME in Mechanical Engineering. after earning a PE I went to law school and I am not a patent attorney. Throughout this time I have been a farmer raising both beef and dairy cattle, pigs, egg and meat chickens, and sheep. Even though I am in my mid 30s, I thought about going to Vet school to help me in the farm business and the patent practice. Hard college programs do not scare me. What is your assessment of my proposal?

I have no idea what I was doing differently, but my other group members had no issues! I guess cows don’t love me haha! Those are just a couple examples but everyone has their own struggles (+ or - cows) 😊 just remember what you consider to be a “failure” doesn’t define you or the vet you’re going to be!! Good luck with everything!

In my Country vet school very easy to get into and there is just 20 students graduate from it. I would like to know the statistics about your country like how many students entered and how many students graduate and how much the salary.
@yourvetamanda3 жыл бұрын
That's so interesting! I can only speak for my experience at the Ontario Veterinary College but 120 students are accepted every year. Majority of those students will graduate from the program after 4 years. The salary will vary depending on which area of vet med you go into but it can range from $70,000 - $80,000 starting out!

How did you pay for college, did yup have a job, I’m worried about paying for it, can you pay for it after you graduate. How long do you have to pay it off?
@yourvetamanda4 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching! Depending on where you go to school tuition will be different. I know in the US, tuition for vet school is A LOT more than it is in Canada. I'm very lucky and I have some help from my parents when it comes to paying for school. In the past, I haven't worked through the school year but my summer job each year helps. I also apply for OSAP which is a government loan. It's an interest free loan while you're in school and then once you graduate interest starts. So you can take as long as you need to pay off your loan (but the sooner the better!). Another really helpful thing is applying for scholarships and grants from your school. This has been extremely helpful for me in the past when it comes to paying for tuition. Hope this helps!

The process of (getting into) vet school in the US or Canada is so interesting to me! I am a vet student located in The Netherlands, Utrecht University. We don't have anything like undergrad here (I don't even really understand what it is/how it works) but we go into uni straight out of high school. So a lot of people in my program were 18 or even 17 first year of vet school. Its also 6 years here, not 4, but it's devided into a Bachelor's degree (3 years) and a Master's degree (3 years). The bachelor program is a general program but into the master you choose a specialty; small pets (cats and dogs etc), horses, or lifestock. We are legally allowed to treat any animal but you usually keep to your specialty. Do you also choose a direction or do you have a more general education?
@yourvetamanda4 жыл бұрын
It really is so interesting hearing about other vet programs!! Our first 2 years of vet school are pretty generalized so we learn about every species and then in our third and 4th years we start to stream and get a little more specialized! Our undergrad is a Bachelors degree, so here you need to complete at least 3 years of a Bachelors before you can apply to vet school!

First of all, I'm so glad with your progress in vet school. This year, if I get good grades in the final exams, I will have to choose between vet school and med school. I feel like I'd love vet school since animals are my passion but I get a lot of pressure about going to med school. Are these faculties totally the same or I should go where my feeling leads me to?
@yourvetamanda4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching!!! Vet school and Med school are both going to be challenging processes to go through. I think it's so important to follow your heart and think about what will make you happiest 10 years down the road. After school we're all going to be working for plenty of years so I think it's really important to find a job that you're not going to dread going to everyday. The choice is up to you, but I would make sure you make a decision that is best for you and not based on others opinions! Good luck!

Hey you just popped up in my recommended! This is super helpful. I’m graduating undergrad in may and eventually want to go to vet school. I didn’t realize I wanted to until about a year and a half ago, so I have a bunch of prereqs to take before I can apply. I’ve been shadowing at a clinic a ton (where they’re hopefully going to take me on as an assistant this summer), I volunteer at an animal shelter, I volunteer at a wild bird rehab center, and I’m constantly around animals. Here’s the thing- my science grades are mediocre at best. I know I could handle it, but I’m worried they’ll overlook me because of my grades. What do you think? Do I have any chance 😅
@yourvetamanda3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on almost being done undergrad! In terms of applying to OVC specifically, if your grades are not in the top 200 applicants, the rest of your application doesn't really matter. However, I know some vet schools in the US or overseas will look at volunteer experience and marks when ranking applicants! I would find a couple vet schools you're interested in and really figure out what they're looking for in their applicants since it will vary between each school! Hope this helps and best of luck 😊

There are a lot of people who get accepted after their third year! Even though I applied in my third year, I personally don't think I would have been ready to start vet school had I got in that round. I needed another year to figure out study habits and time management. But with that being said, everyone is different and there are plenty of people who get in after third year and do great!

Hey, thanks for watching! I worked at a vet clinic all through high school so I had a lot of hours there, but directly shadowing a vet I’m pretty sure I had just over 100! At OVC there’s no requirement for how many hours you need, so I tried to get a variety in my experience vs lots of hours!

Do you have any high school advice? I have been prioritizing study habits obviously but do you think there is anything else? Also in terms of college, from the research I did I believe my plan is accurate but I found it difficult to find information on getting certified. I am wondering if there is anything I could be missing in terms of schooling because from what I read I believe it's ,1) Obviously high school, 2) Undergrad 3) Vet school (here's where I feel like I'm missing something) 4) 1-year internship 5) 3-year residency 6) take the board test. I know this is long but if you could give me any advice it would be very appreciated.

Thanks so much for watching!! Honestly, you have your schooling more planned out than a lot of people I know (including myself haha) so good for you!! In high school, I would focus on getting some experience in the profession if you can. Other than that, not much will count from high school on your application! Once you're in vet school, you can try and volunteer or work with some orthopedic surgeons or join clubs that will further your interest in that area! My biggest tip on preparing for college is to set good study habits for yourself in high school! Although high school marks don't really matter for your vet school application I found that the study habits I had in high school carried over to university!
