Hey Amanda! Im applying to OVC right now and, like you, one of my experiences is VIDA volunteer (spay/neuter clinic in Costa Rica) I know you said that you put that under veterinary experience but I was wondering how you went about doing that? The BIF asks for the clinic and name of the veterinarian, so what did you put as the clinic if they were pop up clinics? Sorry if that doesn't make sense I'm just not sure how to fill it out if I worked under multiple vets and there wasn't a specific clinic! Thanks in advance

I'm in my last year of high school, and it's exciting being able to finally start taking steps towards pursuing a career in vet med. I know there's a long road ahead, but I can't wait to get started! Thank you for the videos you've been putting out, there's a very small number of Canadian veterinary KZbinrs out there and your videos have been so helpful in clearing things up!

I am a first year vet student, and to be pretty honest I am completely terrified because my routine is home - university - study - sleep and repeat all over and even doing that the exams didn't go as I expected... I expect that this feeling is temporary, sometimes I feel so lonely even thought I have friends from vet school and my family supports me so much... my fear is not giving up but never being able to end the degree of my dreams because I don't have the capacity, but this is the dream of my life, veterinary medicine is my calling since I was a little child

I'm 17, I've been thinking about vet school, and the more I think about it the more excited I get, bc I really think this is what I want, and this video helped me, bc yeah I know it's not gonna be always easy, but if this is what I want for life, then it's worth. also, I'm a non native english speaker, and i live in japan, so there's more things for me to worry about besides just getting into vet school, but I'm sure I can do this !! (but also I don't have money, and don't know if it is possible to work while studying, hopefully yes 🙏)

Kind of jealous of our uni. I don't think we get our hands on anything practical in the first year. It's just boring chemistry, bio, histology + embryology etc. I'm so behind on anatomy already I don't even want to continue lol

Amanda, I really, really want to be a vet, it's been my dream for as long as I can remember. what would you suggest as some good first steps towards fulfilling that dream at my age now, since I'm only twelve. I don't want to feel like I'm just sitting here, with a dream, but doing nothing to move closer towards accomplishing it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Me too but I'm 13 😅 I'm nowhere near being a vet but probably just study hard (but not too hard!) and try to get actual books on animals anatomy and stuff to get a feel for how vet school would be like

For now, the best you can do is just watch some vet-based videos to figure out if this is what you want to do. Also, if you can, volunteer at animal shelters or animal sanctuaries. I did about 140 hours of volunteering and really enjoyed it! Once you get into high school, check to see if your school offers a Co-Ops class. I took one in grade 11 and I got to spend 2.5 hours every school day at a vet clinic with the vets for a full semester. And this counted as 2 classes. Sadly there's not too much you can do at your age. Just explore your interests, learn about vet-based stuff if you want, get good marks in grades 10-12 and volunteer. Good luck!

I graduated from college with a degree in advertising photography. I have worked professionally for large retail brands like Nike, Ralph Lauren, gap, and Tory Burch as a photo retoucher but I am now considering going back to school to become a vet. I know I need to take a couple of courses just to qualify because my degree did not involve any science or math courses. But now I’m concerned that I won’t be able to get in because I have no relevant vet experience besides caring for my own cats and dogs. How do I convince a vet to allow me to shadow them and get relevant vet experience when I don’t have any training? Currently I have a cat with acromegaly and this experience of handling her care is why I’m considering a career change. She gets daily medications including insulin injections, liquid medications, and pills. We visit the vets every two weeks and work with a specialist via email every 1-2 weeks. We track her glucose daily and do urinary checks for ketones regularly. Does any of this count as experience hours?

If you can convey your interest to a vet it shouldn't matter if you have experience off the bat. You have to start somewhere. Just ask to shadow and then when they are more comfortable with you and you are more confident. Ask if you can get some hands on experience or if there are smaller things you can assist with. Work your way up. Maybe you'll get enough experience to apply for an assisting position or end up with a lot of observation hours. Either way.

I may have missed this in another video but I have a question. How did you study when you were still in vet school after getting a puppy? I will be thankful if you share some tips and tricks. I am in vet school too. Just finished my 3rd year out of a 5.5 year program. We (my husband and I, I am around 8-9 years older than my colleagues) got a puppy in April and studying was impossible with her. I had so little time for anything that I fall behind in all subjests and as a result I failed most of my final exams. This semester I will drop out as I won't be accepted back with this many failed exams. I will study and retake them, hopefully I will pass this time so I will be able to enroll again in 2025. But I really wonder how did you do it all with a pup? Obviously it is possible, you did amazing!

Have you found any regret/burnout/compassion fatigue? I'm working as a tech assistant rn at a vet ER while working on finishing my undergrad, and i feel quite fearful I guess? Some of the doctor and techs I work with seem to be so unhappy, and I constantly see posts on reddit and social media about burnout, the pay, and people leavivng the field, and it makes it hard to want to even work as an assistant at times. After getting a bad cat bite this weekend and seeing how differently a human ER works in comparison, I wonder if the risk is worth it and if I am going in the right direction...
