Hey coach, thanks for the info first of all. I'm a relatively new flag football coach (3rd season) although I have assisted in coaching several years tackle football this is my first head coaching position. I'm in a demoralizing 0-8 skid , 0-2 in this new season (12-14 5on5)I know it's not the NFL but it hurts me to see these kids fight week after week and lose. Politics and bad luck combined with low enrollment has led to the haves and the have nots. . If you could give me any pointers or advice of any kind it would be greatly appreciated. I started volunteering years ago to coach my son and I ended up caring for all my players as they were my own. Your enthusiasm seems genuine. I've rambled enough. Good day. Josh

Josh A First of all coach, you are not alone! I’ve had a few of these seasons and it can be demoralizing if the main focus of the game is to win. I’m not going to act like that doesn’t matter, but as coaches, we can choose what we focus on every single week. For me, I would focus on progress at each skill level per player. Giving them a word of the week like grit or persistence, focuses on being knocked down over and over, but getting up and pulling together as a team even through adversity. Focusing on what they can control, which is just getting better at the techniques and skills you are coaching. So if one of the players grabs the flag, when usually they miss it, I celebrate that in a big way. If my running back who usually runs east to west, runs north and south and does one move, I celebrate that. If we don’t let anyone behind us, I celebrate it. I focus on the fundamentals of the game and celebrate them for progress of the fundamentals. It transfers the focus from winning, to execution and improving certain skills week by week. Progress is success. I would also share this with the parents, so they know your philosophy. As for the games themselves, put players where they are strongest. Your flag grabbers should be 1 yard off the line, your fastest should be in the back, with one or two rushers alternating to try to shut down their quarterback. Send me your email and I’ll send you my playbook, and depending on your quarterback, you should be either 60-40 or 80-20 pass versus run. Hope this helps. Talk more soon.

Youth Flag Football with Coach D Hi Coach, I would love to have a look at your playbook. Specifically im having trouble with running plays at this age group (12-14) I have the jet sweep of course and a sort of wish bone style double backfield which I run passes out of as well. We are a passing offense (I've got a great QB) but we have to keep them honest with a few runs.

My team lost the game because of the defense not pulling flags. If this wasn’t the case we would’ve won against a really good team so on Monday’s practice, I think this will be very useful.

Good tips on the defensive side. What if running back runs into or makes contact with defensive players who have squared up position in front of running back? Your tips make sense but just wondering if it is the responsibility of the ball carrier or defensemen to avoid contact.
@CoachD2 жыл бұрын
The running back needs to make sure they don’t run over or make direct contact with the defender. Good question. Most kids just jump out of the way, but it’s a good habit to stay strong and square up, even to slow down the runner as other team members rush to the ball carrier for support. Thx for the question.

Hey coach, I was wondering if you'd have any tips on how to mentally prepare your team and yourself before playing. Whenever my team plays, we always start off not really trying our best, and then in the second half we actually "start playing"(if that makes sense).
@CoachD5 жыл бұрын
bindervader For me I like to start every practice or game with a “word of the week” like Grit, Sportsmanship, Focus, Perseverance, etc. We discuss what it means as a team and how we can live it out on the field individually. This helps them have something to focus on immediately. Then at halftime we share one way we saw someone else on the team embody that word. It’s very effective. No, no intentional diving or blocking of any sort is allowed in most leagues.

Hi, how are you? I'm from the city of Rio Verde in the state of Goiás. Brazil I'm accompanying your videos of flag football training for children and it's helped a lot. And already thank you for dedicating your time and sharing your knowledge with the world. I am passionate about the sport and have a sporting socio-educational project that aims to teach and disseminate Flag football in our region. But I came to doubt the field for a game and 70x27 right and for children from 7 years to 10 years what measure is used !?
