I still see educational videos, parodies and such get copyright strikes... KZbin is great for many reasons but shit like this is something they need to fix..

Interesting video! I had a weird situation a few years back (before I even knew about monetisation!) when a recording of a cover I played with my band at a wedding was apparently so spot-on that Warner Music Group tried to have it taken down :-D I think I filed a dispute and said "the band are all really flattered that you thought this was the original but unfortunately not, *we're just that good*"

But how do you figure out which songs you can cover that won't get blocked or taken down completely? Wasting Time And Money recording & editing a drum cover just to have it blocked in some countries or removed entirely feels awful..

I've been making drum cover videos were basically I just blast the song through a bass amp and record audio/video simultaneously. I am just starting getting into recording the video first of me playing the song, and then overlaying the actual audio later. I keep running into copyright blocks and bs so thank you for this information! I think the pitch bend might be the easiest solution.

I'm really glad you made a video on this, since you are a very popular KZbin channel that does covers. I used to make covers on Facebook/KZbin but stopped because of copyright. I know what fair use is but drum covers aren't under it. I've seen a lot people say that they don't own the copyrighted material and state who the owner is, but I know that will not help them when it comes to dealing with a claim. I feel like if people followed copyright laws more strictly there would be less content on KZbin. Having that said, I am not against copyright, just wanted to state that thought.

Hi do you know how KZbin detects copyright infringement? I frequently record public cover performance and some of them were copyright claimed. I wonder if KZbin detects it from the melody of KZbin or whether the title of the song title of a KZbin video plays a part. I noted some uploader didn't bother to list the titles of the Performance. I wonder was it because the title increases the chance of detection

If you do a cover song where everything that's audible is all you (meaning no use of the original recording) you just have to get what's called a "compulsory mechanical license" and pay 9.1 cents per sale/digital download. You can learn more about it if you go to Harry Fox Agency's website! Some great information in this video, Cooper. I'm sure it's helping a lot of "KZbin musicians".

tomas arriete I think they contact him. Once you gain some popularity/views they will see your videos and think its worth paying him to sponsor. I think that is how it works.

Some royalty free music is easily made with Garage Band on an iPad. I've sold a bit on nothing tracks. To create background music is cake. Stock loops. Maybe someone will try this too?

I think this whole video is just a summary about all the things that are wrong and outdated about the copyright-laws... Which is a lot in my opinion btw :p I think there should be nothing wrong with a cover. All I hear is free publicity for your music, and I think that should be supported by artists. I don't see why the revenue can't be split between the creator and artist/label... Also you forgot to mention that there are services where you can buy the rights for songs. Think about Monstercat for example. For (I believe) $80/year you can use (nearly) all of Monstercat's music on youtube for that year. All the monitization is yours then, and if you pay per year the video will never be striked.

MagicLegend because in that context you stole something and made money from it. That's like going to a clothes shop, stealing a T-Shirt, and then selling that T-Shirt back to the original shop.

If you do it right it will cover their costs, and they will also make some money from it. Not to speak of knowledge about their brand/song/band.

I agree with you that the revenue for the song itself should be going to the original artist. But if one makes a new version from it, maybe even as a full cover; so everything is done by you, it is still the original song? It just doesn't add up for me. I think that if you split the revenue with the original artist, and you get a piece for your creativity that you added to the song there shouldn't be a problem. Well, apart from the big companies only wanting money and not caring about people then ;-)

Here's why the current copyright implementation is wrong, improper, and illegal. When you alter the song so much from the original by placing a very prominent drum track on top of the original track, then it is no longer the original content. It's the same as if I took a song and screamed "LALALALALAL" for 3 minutes during the entire song. NOBODY is listening to that song for the song because it's not the original song anymore. When someone watches a drum cover, they are not there for the original song, they are there to listen to that specific drummer's interpretation of a drum part for that song. If you just upload a copy of the song, OF COURSE they should divert the ad revenue because you just uploaded an exact copy... BUT a drum cover is a wholly different animal. The current system is wholly improper and the content holders are simply shooting themselves in the foot. Soon, they will get what they want, which is that nobody will be aware of their music anymore.

Wrong. You are altering someone's copy written material without their consent. You are then using the resulting infringement to achieve monetary gain without any share being given to the copyright owner. If you did not use other peoples songs then no one would watch your videos, so it is not fair use, or legal for you to exploit your self off the backs of other musicians.

That's not true because even before youtube existed, if you wanted to do a little show at a small venue with your band and no backing tracks, you had to pay to cover copyrighted songs.

Hi I use Drumless tracks which I believe originated from the game ‘rock band’, I play drums over the tracks and upload them to my channel (unlisted uploads at the moment as just trying things out). Regarding these Drumless tracks however (which are already on KZbin -that’s where I get them from) should I be able to upload and share my videos? Thanks! (I’m in the UK by the way, and don’t want to make any money from KZbin, I just want to have a channel to share my uploads)

Yes, you absolutely can. If there is no original recording of the music present in the video, then you can monetize the video.

Yes, but it's not like a lot people will watch a drum or guitar video with no background track. Usually it's extremely boring opposed to a usual cover. So unless you've got a few million people eager to watch anything you upload, you won't get much views and money with that kind of videos.

Mostly this come down to monetizing the video. If you monetize it, it could get blocked and you could get a strike on your account. Sometimes the monetization will go to the record label or artist. Just depends on who the artist is. Rick Beato has a few videos on this very subject.
