I was about to say the same thing. I’m worried about the further radicalization of people. A conservative platform took a screen shot of their like to dislike ratio and it was like 28k to 100, and said “see, we are the majority”, completely ignoring the fact that people who agree with them watch them, and people who don’t agree with them, generally don’t watch them. I just feel like this next step will further embolden them. *edited because I got the info wrong and looked it up to amend my original statement*

This. Content farms have been a huge problem on KZbin over the past years (at least from the consumer perspectivex, clearly not from KZbin's perspective....) and the one way to instantly identify them has always been the dislike ratio. This decision is infuriating, but evidently it brings KZbin that coin, so...

Ann Reardon from how to cook that did a whole series on debunking viral hacks-- in those videos she also talks a lot about content farms and the algorithm and the dislike button. She talked about how the dislike and like button are basically equivalent-- they both boost you in the eyes of the algorithm, it doesn't differentiate between good and bad engagement, it's just all engagement to them. She points to pewdipie's video about the dislike button-- in it he asked people to purposely dislike the video, to prove the button didn't mean anything. In the end because it got so much negative engagement, he got a huge number of views, more than his typical content. She also talks about content farms, Facebook and Google and privacy laws, and KZbin's community rules and how those content farms are constantly violating them, but are so profitable for KZbin that they dont do anything to stop them. It is a great series and for people who are interested in the backend of social media stuff, I can't recommend it enough

something my stats teacher said once was that people only take surveys/leave reviews if they're really upset or really happy with their experience. but the problem with reviews in the world of service is that we expect to have a great experience, so we probably won't write a review about it unless it's bad. so the bad reviews take over and disproportionately affect the average ratings of things like restaurants

I don't usually use the dislike feature, but I do think it helps to identify fraud and other harmful videos. I can see how it could sway peoples opinions though. I agree that this is a pretty useless change and I personally believe that KZbin was pressed by bigger companies using the site to further their brand. If I do use the dislike button, its to notify the creator that something could be improved. For example, a channel I watch started editing in lag so that people buy their patreon... This seems a little ridiculous to me so I disliked the video in hopes that other viewers would also notify them that this is too far. It's their choice on what content they make, but I can also choose to stop consuming their content due to these changes. Like don't make it unwatchable to the poor folks lol just take it down entirely.

It felt like KZbin was protecting brands from the mobs of angry people and cancel culture. While I don't agree with bandwagon hate, however, as Cristine said, the creator/brand had the ability to hide them if they chose to do so. Protecting tbe mental health of the creator sounds like a cop-out, imo, especially when they can see it on the backend. Unfortunately, the world isn't always full of only good news free from any and all triggers, and nothing but positive reinforcement; sorry if that disappoints anyone. Haha

I totally understand where Ben is coming from when he talks about the psychological effects of the polarization and politicization of the pandemic. As someone who cares about the guidelines and is vaccinated, it is so INCREDIBLY stressful to live with people who don’t care. Worrying if THEY are going to expose ME to it even though I’ve been doing everything right and trying my best to follow the guidelines as closely as possible. I’m also a service worker, grocery store and retail so I am very tired of anti-maskers and anti-vaxers yelling at me over a piece of cloth. It has ruined my relationship with my dad because he is a “fuck Fauci, only trust Trump” kind of guy. I am the total opposite. My relationship with him used to be great before the pandemic and now it has completely gone to shit, I can barely have a conversation with him without him yelling about something Trump said or some headline he read. It’s incredibly tiring and frustrating. I just want to move out but I can’t afford it. I want the pandemic to end so badly so I can move on and try to fix my relationship with him.

I’m with you two, it just seems like unnecessary change. Like that’s what KZbin is wasting time, money, and resources on when there’s real issues that need to be addressed??? I never really notice the like to dislike radio unless it’s an insane number, or the creator themselves point it out (usually in a funny way) 🤷🏻‍♀️ that’s just me, but I definitely can see why others think it’s a useful tool for measuring the legitimacy or quality of the content

A thing that has been bothering ALL comment sections I've visited is the sheer amount of bots and spam comments. At least to me, that's a problem that is much more dangerous to users. People (mostly children) that are willing to click random links etc. are much more at risk than youtubers and brands that have a dislike count on their videos. 🙅‍♀️

Ben I totally feel you man, I also get hypnic jerks while I am falling asleep. It is just because your brain is going into dream mode, but your body is late to shut down your muscle movement. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it. Cristine, please get used to it. :)

Ha! One of my new favorite things that you do Christine is when you "umm-hmm, ya" into the mic. Your voice is also soothing, just like Ben's. Its because you both are nice, thoughtful people and that is ALWAYS good to have in the world. I enjoy having you over for company on streaming and podcast days. I think I even drink more tea now.

I used like/dislike ratio to see if a video has some technical problems (i.e. niche sports livestreams often have really bad quality). Just an easy way to check without potential spoilers in the comments.

What Ben’s describing at the end of the podcast (feeling like you’re falling when falling asleep) is called a hypnic jerk! It’s an involuntary rapid muscle spasm probably due to a misfire in the nerves of the brain, but researchers aren’t exactly sure what causes it. Don’t yell at Beyn, Cristine, he can’t help it!! :P

It does feel kind of shitty for male celebrities to come into a space that is historically a female space and selling an expensive product to their female fans. Like I hella support men/all genders painting their nails but it feels kind of disingenuous for the reasons Cristine said.

On the note of creative people needing to branch out: I've seen Rob Zombie live 4 times. I think just once I've seen them play Black Sunshine and he said he hates doing that song. It made me a bit sad but then made sense why they don't play it every show. It feels good when you know the artist is into what they're doing

The sleeping thing that Ben does, in our house we call that the "I'm Asleep Now Twitch". It is a normal occurrence. Both me and my husband do it. Funny story: one time my husband dozed off at his computer desk, and due to the "I'm Asleep Now Twitch", he flung his mouse across the room.

Graced by Menchie! 😻 I'm sure there will be a day when we don't even remember what it was like for there to be a dislike count, just like the old 5-star rating system. What I'll miss is being able to quickly assess the value of a 2-minute video for something like an obscure Windows 10 fix for some random software problem. If I see 300 views and 2 likes, the overall informational value of that is very different depending on whether there are 60 dislikes or 0.

The dislike button is integral to any video related to tutorials and reviews especially. Since you can delete comments, the dislikes are so important! If someone intentionally disables comments or dislikes on their video, that automatically makes it shady to me, but now we don't have that heads up anymore. Now you can basically remove ALL negative feedback, *and that's a huge problem!*

I remember at one point in time there would be a playlist created that had all the videos that you have "Liked" and I use to use that for content that I would want to re-watch but because it was continuous I would have to scroll through a bunch of videos to look for the one that I wanted to watch again so I started making playlists myself. In any case I do wonder how this is messing with interactions in videos, I know for me personally I have seen a drop in likes to a video the ratio of views/to likes has always been off but the scale is way more noticeable.

You raised a good point with the live subscriber count going away. That was a good way to end the targeted harassment by breaking all those streams and didn’t really effect any other user experience. I kind of don’t believe that removing dislikes is going to do anything like reducing the amount of targeted harassment since it’ll just move anyone of that disposition into the comments section.
