The KZbin algorithm hates our channel. In this week's episode, we have an honest discussion about the roadblocks that we believe KZbin has with our channel. We do our best to dive into the mystery of the algorithm and how it’s affecting our channel. We need your help in where we go from here. We hope you will take the time to take this trip with us and most importantly offer us feedback in the KZbin comment section.
Let us know in the comments below! ⬇️
We’re open to all your suggestions and feedback because, honestly, this channel is for YOU. Thanks for sticking with us through thick and thin.
Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and hit that bell so you don’t miss out on our journey to (hopefully) beat the algorithm!

Hey guys. Sorry to hear you are struggling. Here’s my input. I found you in 2021 when we got our first camper. We only camp 6-8 times per year. I watch about a dozen videos on different channels each time we head to a new destination - but I only follow one RV channel and watch vids that aren’t about my destination- that’s yours. We LOVE your boondocking vids. They are the best ones. You guys are smart and discuss the things that matter. Road quality, clearance, where to turn around, how many sites are empty in a given day, near by necessities, etc. And we love how you will drive through an area and point out a bunch of sites with their benefits and drawbacks. We feel like we can go in knowing the odds of getting a spot that works for us without getting stuck. I also like when you show a nearby town (like the Silverton video) or activity (hike in Buena Vista) near a boondock site. You’ve kindly responded to all of my comments both public and private and given us advice that really helped. So somewhere along the line I got invested and starting watching videos that didn’t really apply to our camping trips. Im amazed at how you care for your cats on the road. I cheered when you finished that insane hike. I cried when Nikko died. I secretly hoped we might run into you guys when it seemed we might be in the same town. I still don’t watch product videos unless I happen to be shopping for that item which is rare. You mentioned that you stay in one place for so long it’s hard to generate frequent boondocking videos. Could you possibly go out and scout other nearby boondock sites even if you don’t actually stay there? A lot of us head to one of your recommended spots and may find it full. It would be nice to see other nearby possibilities and I’d watch a separate video for each one. You guys have a real knack for those and could provide a lot of useful info even if you don’t stay there. Just the video driving thru in the truck and /talking about access and amenities, how many spots and who fits would be great. I watch all your boondock videos now even if it’s not somewhere I’m likely to go because I learn things that are helpful about boondocking in general and choosing good sites. Wishing you the best and hoping that you keep boondocking as at least a part of your future channel. Proud to be a member of your squad!

Andrea, we can probably never express how much your post touched us. We were actually sitting here on the couch when we read it and were kinda in shock (not to mentioned started to tear up when you mentioned Nikko too). I think sometimes YT and social media in general can really start to distort the way you see things and where we place value. Your message was a heartfelt and moving reminder of why we started this channel in the first place. We love this life, we love sharing our adventures, camping sites as well as the lows and highs. We have always aimed to not be one of those channels that dramatize our story and or try to create a storyline that this life style is anything else that just life with a moving home. Your message was without a doubt the most touching and eye opening one we have ever gotten and we want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We are pround to have you as a member of #thewandersquad and can't wait to share an update video in the next week or two as a follow up to this one. Thank you again and we appreciate you following along as we set out on year #4 next week. Wander On- Kyle and Michelle

To be upfront and honest, everyone has been complaining about views being down and the fact that negative and/or always drama sells. We are not interested in going down the negative/ always drama road. If you are doing what you love to do, and you continue to grow, count it as a win. Slow and steady is our motto, and we are also having a great adventure along the way. Hope you are able to find your mojo. - Michelle

Congrats on hitting almost 8000 subs. Someone must be subscribing. Angie and I were monetized in April 2020. Here we are 4 years later, having gotten over a million views on our channel yet, we are only at 4200 subs. My advice, stay the course. I found Kyle and Renee of Happily Ever Hanks when they only had about 500 subs. I commented on their channel, they used to comment frequently on ours back in the fall/winter of 2020. They are over 300,000 subs now. When their channel really started taking off I asked Kyle what they were doing to get the views. He told me that they had begun scripting their videos before filming and focused on being entertaining and not just filming, then editing. So they had a plan ahead of time about what they were going to film. That has worked for them. Good luck with your decisions. Sean

Kyle & Michelle your channel is the first that I ever wrote a comment on several months ago. I did that simply because I think you folks are honest genuine people. I very much appreciate your boondocking campsite reviews because of the detail in which you take the time to explain. Things like: the road going in, the size of RV, site levelness, the amenities close by, RV dump/water, propane, laundry, weather related roads. I'm very much interested in simple things like setting up in an unlevel site, how you find the sites and the research tools you use and how to use them. Trip planning, RV repair and most definitely the catastrophies that come with boondocking. I'm not an expert but I see lots of RV channels that cover a wide variety of topics. I personally don't much care for product reviews especially in an effort to get me to purchase something. Yet, at the same time like everyone else I'm curious about the internet you use and if it works in a specific location. I'm kinda the type of subscriber that jumps around from one interest to another but I truly appreciate your craft and you should be commended on your efforts. Please keep up the excellent work and I as well as others will do what we can to pass the word!

Kevin, first off I want to thank you for taking the time to share all of that with us. I think sometimes we don't know what is going on behind the screen when folks are watching the channel and the feedback we got from this video was so uplifting. We apprecaite your honesty and we hope that with a few tweaks (which we shared in a video a week or so after this) we will be back even stronger. Yes our boondocking sites (and now our interactive map) have always been one of our most popular products and don't worry they will still be around and actually probably even more of them in the coming months (we just did one on Custer, SD). We also just purchased a drone which we hope will make them even better, but I need to get my commercial license before using them in the videos. We are also going to make and effort to cut down the product reviews unless it is really an item that we love (like the 12v starlink conversion it made a huge difference). We are also planning to more videos like you mentioned about how we find spots, plan trips and set up so I like that we are on the same page. Thank you again- Kyle and Michelle

I would suggest that while you are in 1 location for 2 weeks or whatever you show the things you can do and explore in the area. This would allow for more videos per week. Maybe also explain how you locate boondocking spots before you get to a place. Also important to have a call to action in every video "like and subscribe." What I have found is that you guys, for the longest time, were the only ones who actually got me on their subscriber list. I was reading some comments on another channel and the hosts responded that YT is the problem - not getting the subscriber requests to the channel. I currently fall in the category of those who haven’t watched for a while. Life got busy and I kept putting it off. Now I’m trying to catch up. It sounds like focusing on one subject could make the algorithm “love” instead of “hate” you, but it would be disappointing if you find you have to move in that direction. We greatly benefit from your boondocking videos, including things to do around those areas, but we also very much enjoy following the day to day life issues that you document. That may not help much with your decision, but I would say, do whatever will work the best for you. We will follow you regardless of your direction. 😊

What about one channel focusing primarily on RV Life? Then make a seperate channel for product reviews? Or is that even in the realm of possibility? Each one would have specific algorithms and may end up taking off. I think campsite reviews are likely coming your way because of specific searches for campsites. I know that happens for me. If I'm going to a specific area, I hit KZbin, looking for campsite reviews for that area. I typically subscribe to KZbin channels for one niche that they do. Honestly, though, it could be that the only question you have to answer is which of the types do you enjoy doing the most? Stick with that one and you'll enjoy making videos and won't get burned out :) Appreciate you guys!

Hey guys, great questions here - we really don't understand youtube well either. From what I have heard removing videos is not very helpful, not sure I would do that. but moving forward you might want to focus on one area or another, I personally like the campsite reviews you do - they have been very helpful for us - but I know what you mean about being evergreen and slow starts. For my vote I'd say Boondocking videos mixed with either campsite reviews or boondocking site reviews. Product reviews, while useful, are something I don't think we are going to be doing many of - we have tried a few and they are never very popular for us. Nice to get the free stuff but it comes at an opportunity cost which I don' think is worth it in the end. I think another thing that probably weighs in is the popularity of the area you boondock in. It can be an absolutely stunning area, but if it is so remote most people cannot get there - or doesn't have a good population base in striking distance - I don't think you get the number of hits. But I'll be the first one to admit we have no idea how this game is played - and I'm sure with the heavy proliferation of AI/machine learning its going to be changing a lot over the coming months. I hope you figure it out as we enjoy your videos/channel very much! Good luck to you guys ❤

Thanks so much you guys, I think you are right on target regarding the site reviews of those very remote areas. I had not ever thought about that. Been sub'd for quite a while. We enjoy watching you guys. Always interested in new boondocking sites since we do a lot of that each summer out west. Don't need a lot of how too info as we have done it for several years. Product reviews are hit or miss. We have already figured most of what we need. Will probably order those starlink cable adapters, though. I wouldn't want to see a drastic change in what you produce. You guys are closer to our age than many of the younger RV channels so we probably relate better. I am not qualified to give advice on how to reach that audience. As far as most viewers not being sub'd I know that when I am researching something on YT, it is usually a 1 time thing, so I watch what I need to learn how to fix something or whatever, but have no need to sub. What puzzles me is why subs don't watch most videos. The channels I sub, I usually watch 80% or more of the posts. Good luck to you both. Wayne and Carol

Interesting information on You-Tube. A few years ago during the covid pandemic ( over a million died folks, including friends of ours) I bought a small Cannon camera and started filming some music. Just me and one of my guitars doing covers and original songs I write. I don't edit but they are fun to do. I don't do as many now cause I'm back out at local bars playing now. I just stumbled onto your channel. I'm interested in RV life, hiking, camping, and boondocking. I hope to stop tent camping and start RV'ing in the future. It might just take some time to get the ball rolling. Or, have multiple channels? I heard that a couple that travels internationally has multiple channels.

I am a new subscriber and just started really taking my own YT serious as I hope to be full time on the road in a few years, and having YT supplement the lifestyle. I haven’t watched a lot of your videos yet but I really like the way you present the information about finding dispersed camping sites. Not sure any of this helps but at least it’s another comment. 😂

Welcome aboard and thank you for your support, we just subbed your channel as well and can't wait to follow your adventures too. Thank you for the feedback, yes your campsite reviews have been some of the most popular videos we have done. We are getting back on the road this week so plan on getting some more filmed soon too. Thank you so much for following and even more for taking the time to comment. Wander On- Kyle and Michelle

Hi Kyle and Michelle, Fred and I enjoy all your content as is but if you want to get KZbin to push you out more you have to narrow your focus. We have not narrrowed our focus so we have the same issue as you guys except on a smaller scale. Best Wishes, Mary 💞 Fred

We want to see more of the day to day, and not just on hikes. I think back to the Ouray/Silverton videos we did together - you showed a bit more of the action and not just summary and then jump to next summary. I'm still unsure if it makes sense to split out your Campground Review videos or not - my gut feeling is that you should create a dedicated "The Wandering Shores Campground Reviews" or 'The Wandering Shores Boondocking Channel' (not those exact names, but general concept) that is very targeted, and then you cross-market your two channels. What I don't want to go away is your RV Life videos, I just want to see a bit more b-roll and what you all are actually up to :) You present yourself incredibly well, and I don't think you should ever go away from Campground Reviews and Tutorial videos. In fact, you should probably double down on those because you are SO knowledgeable. But give us more of you and Michelle in your RV Life videos and really show us what you are exploring :)

Thanks, Shaun and Lauren, You and I have had many a discussion about the beast that is the KZbin algorithm. Appreciate the feedback and suggestions. We're hoping to have an update video in the next week or two once we're back out on the road. We've gotten a lot of really helpful feedback and this is an example of yet another. Our approach is to do what we love and hope others enjoy what we do. If ever we were to deviate from that and start making videos specifically for the KZbin algorithm, then it becomes a job instead of a passion. That's OK - but KZbin as a job sucks. We could work at McDonalds for 3 days a month and make more than on KZbin at 10K subs. We're also realistic. We're not 30 years old in a bikini sailing around the world off Hiva Oa... The RV space is tough and KZbin knows that. Sailing around the world? Easy to get 100K. Backpacking or Van life in Vietnam? Also easy. Doing stupid stunts or gaming 7/24? Piece of cake. There's only so many middle aged folks that can hike through Yellowstone before the algorithm says enough is enough and we get that. Do we hope someday for a Silver Play Button? Yup. But if it happens, it will be because we love making videos and nothing else...

I don’t think it’s anything you’re doing or not doing. I pay monthly to watch KZbin and subscribe to channels I like and more importantly check the notification bell for all notifications from a channel. I think that KZbin’s notifications system is flawed. I only receive a small percentage of notifications from the channels I have subscribed to. I have favorite channels that I literally have to go search for them to see they uploaded a new video and it frustrates me to have to go do that. It’s KZbin not you two.

Thanks so much, I think you are on to something. We have several channels that we watch all the time. We have notificaitons set up and just this morning, I got two notificaitons on channels that released their video over a week ago. UGH. We have also be unsubscribed from channels for no reason. We really appreciate your support. We are hoping to have a plan hammered out and do an follow up video in the next week or two. Thanks for your time- Wander On- Kyle
