I honestly can't believe KZbin. First of all, taking out the part with the LGBT+ community being banned from KZbin, this is meant to protect kids from inappropriate content. But if your kid is on KZbin and watching inappropriate content in the first place, that is the parent or guardians fault. Now adding the part with the LGBT+ community being banned, it's bullshit. A women holding hands with her partner in a vlog? Apparently that's inappropriate now. A man kissing his partner on the cheek? Inappropriate. A MTF updating on their surgery? Inappropriate. A non-binary person coming out to their family? Inappropriate. It's complete bull. If we keep raising kids to ignore the LGBT+ community and act like it doesn't exist, more and more kids are going to commit suicide and more and more kids and going to be depressed. We need to teach kids that this is completely normal. So you like guys and girls? That's normal. You only like guys? That's normal. You don't like sex or any relationship? That's completely normal. Start teaching kids this, please.

I was made aware of this just today and when I looked about 30 of my trans related videos have been age restricted. I genuinely cannot believe that this is happening, but here we are. Videos related to identity and education being flagged makes absolutely no sense to me.

People whose argument against Rowan's points is that LGBT content sexualises children and forces them to think about sexuality before an age where this is appropriate, please have a look at near enough any children's magazine. These publications assume heterosexuality and 'force' it upon children by these standards through their fascination with 'relationship goals' and crushes on the opposite gender, as well as a certain level of sex education usually in the agony aunt and problem pages. Restricting videos such as homosexual marriage vows and education denies people of equal treatment in this respect and while this is a mainstream media problem, KZbin should understand their social responsibility to be the voice of minority groups in the media and act in a way that reflects these values.

Honestly, right now it looks like the only way to check is to turn on restricted mode and check your channel to see what's missing. I sent you screenshots on twitter of the first few videos on your channel to see what was restricted. It looked like most of your stuff was available,

By restricting videos you're not 'keeping kids safe', you're ensuring that groups of kids aren't safe because they can't find out that they're not broken or wrong in some way. If there's people that don't want to see that content then they don't have to watch it, it's that simple. Nobody is forcing it down their throat, but to not have it there and have hate and fear mongering constantly around lgbt kids is going to hurt them more.

even if only 5% of people were LGBT (which is not true), those 5% are still extremely important. or are a few (apparently, about 75) million kids unimportant? LGBT+ teenagers are at least twice as likely to try to commit suicide compared to straight teenagers. The rates are especially high when you only look at trans teens. Those numbers are obviously heightened when those LGBT+ kids feel alone and have no support. I have had restricted mode on with my brother's account since we set it up for him about a year ago (he's 8 now and we got sick of getting Minecraft video recommendations on our accounts). This absolutely horrible, but unfortunately not surprising. It still baffles me that anyone can seriously say that they aren't against LGBT+, but they don't want it around children. By saying that children shouldn't be exposed to it, you are inherently saying that is bad. You cannot have one without the other. Thank you for doing something about this, and letting others know. I hope we can get them to respond to this issue, one way or another.

Oh man I just found out about this today and it's so surreal - every film I've made with LGBT characters vanishes in restricted mode. And the connection to LGBT history - to the censoring of our relationships as inappropriate - is so upsetting. And like with my films I've worked hard to make sure that they're 100% appropriate for younger viewers. There's no depiction or even mention of sex and no one even swears - the only thing left to be "inappropriate" is LGBT people. I am so with you in your anger and I hope there's a way to fix it

Interesting! I had a different run-in with KZbin's restricted mode recently: I do yoga at work on lunch at my school board office's gym, and I use KZbin videos from one of my favourite KZbin gurus as a guide. ALL of her videos are safe for kids in my experience, yet the video for helping PMS and cramps was not available in restricted mode 😕 Definitely useful for kids to know about and it wasn't inappropriate for kids at all!

That's another form of censorship that people so often forget about :/ women's bodies are so often sexualized in the media and the larger world, and it leads to situations like this, or where young girls feel ashamed about their perfectly normal bodily functions, or where people don't see period products as necessary hygiene products or as luxury items (and tax them as such). Sexism sucks.

Wow, I did not know this was happening on KZbin still. I really hope that this is some sort of system error because KZbin has become such an important part of our modern culture and for me personally it has given me a form of connection to other people in many different communities. My guess is that there aren't actually people reviewing the content but computer systems and they have "red flag" words that they use to determine if something is deemed inappropriate of violating ToS.

I'm from the UK in an all girls private school but my school has an openly gay male deputy-head and we have had two lesbian teachers and a bisexual male teacher. I'm kind of lucky in the accepting attitudes from the school and most of the pupils. I was talking with one of the lesbian teachers about her getting married and some of the younger years were asking about how the gay teacher met his husband. We have also had assemblies on LGBTQ related stuff. I can't believe youtube is doing this :(

This kind of thing enrages me. I'm the mother of a so far cis/het boy and want him to be exposed to as many different ways of being human as possible. We read widely, but other forms of media are sorely lacking in any sort of representation of gender or sexuality outside the binary. My kid can watch the most white/cis/het/abled stereotypical dreck where the guy is considered charming and persistent for continually hitting on the girl who keeps turning him down and the boy who has "feminine" traits is often the butt of the joke, but we can't see kids talking about what it feels like to be outside the represented population?? I don't need my kid to be protected, I can do that for him. And it's not by someone else deciding what he can and cannot be exposed to.

I copy/paste the title of this video on KZbin search engine and it shows up as long as the Restricted mode is off. However if I turn on the Restricted mode I can't find this video although I can find many LGBT videos but this is not one of them.

So looking through the Restricted settings, it says it blocks content flagged by other users. Flagging spam and harassment automatically flags the whole video as well. I'm willing to bet this is a HUMONGOUS contributor to the problem given the number of trolls LGBT videos and channels attract. So if trolling comments are being flagged for deletion, then the videos are being flagged as possibly unsafe or controversial. The more I look at this the more it LOOKS like an algorithm problem. I just hope they're working to resolve it and work the kinks out of their automations. :/

I subscribed to the website because the restricted videos can only be accessed if you have an account proving you are over 18. But tumblr as well...until very recently, words like lesbian were considered an over 18 tag and restricted.

We have a transgender teacher at our school, he actually joined before transitioning and was known as Miss M and now he's Mr E (shortened names for privacy) and multiple other LGBT members of staff & there's so many openly LGBT 6th Formers & our 6th Form Pastoral leader is in a gay relationship (I think they're married & they have adopted kids) basically my school is super accepting (it's in the UK & just a normal comprehensive secondary school & 6th form) so I guess we're super lucky judging by the other comments!

Bing found any video where he swore was hidden and makes him think it's through audio recognition of certain keywords. It's really awful and weird. Thank you for speaking out about this. I maintain a gameplay "Let's Play" style channel, and because of my sexuality I have "lesbian" in every tagged video. I want other gay women of any age to be able to be able to find their way to my channel should they share similar interests. Many popular youtubers in this genre of media production are cis white straight men with few exceptions. I see now I may be hindering my channels growth because youtube thinks my lifestyle in inappropriate. I haven't the words.

At my school we had this day where we would learn about body positivity, how important friends are, and about LGBT+ acceptance. We only had it for one year and the school said they discontinued the event because of low student attendance, but a teacher told me after school that they cancelled it because a nearby church petitioned the administration because our school was "spreading the homosexual agenda"

At my channel videos where I speak to my young viewers out there telling them that it is okay to be diffrent or videos where I stand up for tolerance and that we should not accept homophobia or videos where I show that body issues should not take away your happiness or videos where I talk about how I survived depression and that it gets better if you're in the same position as I was... All this videos are gone in restricted mode. That's not something we should tolerate. Also if a video is about something lgbt related it's not automatically sexual or "inappropriate". I would have been so thankful to be able to watch certain lgbt youtubers back in the day I was insecure about my sexuality. This is also happening to trans youtubers like uppercaseCHASE1. Trans education videos are being age restricted almost immediately after being uploaded and its hurting both potential trans youth that needs the info as well as the content creator. I hope we find a solution to this problem since its icredibly harmful to young lgbt+ people, myself included.

To anyone who's saying youtube is only targetting videos with sexual content in them or is not specifically targetting the LGBT+ community: there's a video of a girl petting her cat with a gay pride flag in the background, 30 seconds or less long, i think, that she only posted to see if it'd get blocked because it has "gay" in the title and a visible pride flag in it. it's not available when you turn on yt's restricted mode. so yes, youtube really is hiding anything connected to the LGBT+ community, no matter what the video itself is about. (I'm not posting the link to the video here so the person who posted it doesn't get attacked by homophobes, but I may post it later, idk, if this comment gets any attention and people are desperate for proof. the video is not that hard to find, though. the title is pretty literal.)

( if you don't see the problem with youtube censoring any kind of LGBT+ content in its "child-safe" mode, it's because it doesn't let children educate themselves on LGBT+ topics (and i'm talking about non-sexual things here) - and kids can be LGBT+, and they often feel very alone because they see nobody else like them anywhere, and censoring LGBT+ content because it's "inappropriate" gives the message that theres something more sexual about it than there is about being straight and cis, or more mature, or even wrong, shameful, bad, and if you're young and think you may be LGBT+, seeing that can be extremely harmful. LGBT+ people, including kids and teenagers are already at much higher risks of suicide, self-harm, bullying, etc, so cutting away any support they might find makes everything worse. Many of us feel more normal because we find others similar to us on the internet. It's not about sex, it's about being part of a community that says that it's okay to be the way you are and to love who you love and anything like that)

You're not going to harm any child by making them aware of LGBT people and issues but it can absolutely be harmful to block questioning children from content that can support them and help them to understand and find a community 🌈

The sexualization also drives me crazy because it assumes all lgbt people are having tons of sex, when they're just as likely to be in sexless relationships as any straight person. From my *personal experience, I'd argue it's actually more likely, so it just seems so doubly stupid to me. -_-

You know resricted mode is probably enabled on videos automatically by a robot that just looks for some broughed key words I'm sure if you contact KZbin they would hopefully get someone to review your videos and unrestrict all the ones that truly should not be restricted. At least maybe I here that youtubes communication with creators can be crap.
