You and farmer Harry metcalfe are probably the two most engaging you tubers - you guys could talk about finger nail painting and still engage your audiences! Though I definitely think the peddlers prefer watching your current content! Keep it up! And never seen negative comments - be largely unwarranted. And don’t be so hard on yourself on the editing - let the fact your channels growing talk for itself, it’s growing and developing with you!

Really enjoyed this Pete. I also have a KZbin channel (caravans😂 so still wheels) when you using your phone download ProMovie. Remove the watermark for £2.99 and it’s brilliant as it unlocks all kind of features. I’m running a canon m50 and m100. I have done a few car videos already but just trying to build awareness of the video etc... so you find the dealers are happy with you filming the cars? New car incoming for us this year😃 My m50 does 108050 and 4K30. For £500 not bad really. I also use FCPX. I’m very close to monetisation. Thanks again Oliver

One of the most important things for a KZbinr to know or learn (From personal experience!) is video editing. You can have a raw video footage of 45 minutes long and it's going to take a good few hours to edit it down to some 10 or 15 minutes long that'll both keep the viewers watching and keep them interested. And humour is also something that goes down very well too. Unfortunately for me, I've not done much KZbin stuff due to ill health. I've, again, just come out of hospital after being there for the last 4 days. Great video Pete. I won't comment on your spelling as it's so easy to muck up one damn letter ;-))...

Peter....Thank you for a fascinating video which give a superb and honest insight for would be vloggers. You kindly helped me with equipment ideas a while ago and I have battled to learn how to use them effectively but I am only doing it for curiosity and no thought of “fame and fortune”. Video editing has been a problem and I would certainly go on a course if I found one accessible...I have the Joby mounts, Sony Action cam, IPhone 11 and a 2019 IPad Pro so not to your level but enough for holiday films. One thing you didn’t say of course is the importance of the presenter!....your great strength is the ability to explain, engage, inform and entertain your viewers...your job gives you a confident manner and your words flow easily without “umm” “errr” etc...that is massively important. My voice was damaged when I was five years old so is not good for public speaking and now I would have to compete in looks for Harry (Harry’s garage!j so I’m not going to wow the younger audience but just may I say, your success is you and the dedication to your viewers...that is a massive commitment! Thank you...no need to reply..that bit might might just spiral to being impossible...Tim “Schmee”...has only replied once when I said the (terrible) fake carbon bonnet on his red Focus Project car looked dreadful...he said “Its not going anywhere!”. Keep up the good work!! Safe driving! Richard

Hi Peter I’ve really enjoyed this video & I wish to feedback because I think you nailed the main success of Petrolped in your final section. I was lucky enough to have a random introduction to you at Goodwood, & that resulted in a great video, but what keeps me checking in is the fact that you respond to comments I may make regarding your other videos, you continually maintain contact regarding my car even though it is now nearly 2 years since we filmed it. You genuinely interact through the channel, the meet & greet (when’s the next one btw?) & any time I contact you personally. I truly believe that this aspect is one of the greatest parts of your success & I encourage you to continue in your current vein. You have generated a ‘community’ feel to your channel & whilst cars are ultimately just machines, the people who enjoy them aren’t & in a machine driven ‘Internet” world, the personal touch will be the winner - always.

Right....I was / am looking at a 2nd vehicle (well, a car, instead of the van I currently use for everything), and have decided on a Mini.....and having searched YT for reviews on Minis, when, lo and behold, up popped your channel, with Ruby Roadster, the JCW Clubman, and the GP3. Now, its the Clubman that has caught my eye, because I'm in the Senior category, but still enjoy fun cars (my first car was a Mini City 998cc btw). I found your channel interesting, personal, fun, enthusiastic and engaging. But why has it taken so long for me to comment? It is because of videos like this one, the videos about Ruby's modifications, your honesty in them, and for the reasons above. You are not pretentious in any way, and you make me feel like part of your journey. Engagement. If I feel engaged and "in common" with the host, then I am more likely to watch the whole video, or at least until you start your closing remarks. Now, having signed in to write this (I'm not normally signed in when I watch - some honesty from me), I have clicked the subscribe button, hit the "thumbs up", and commented....all because of how you kept me engaged. I'm sure your freelance "employers" find you in the same light, and it is why they keep you "working" for them. Lastly, please fuss the Petrol Pooch and the Petrol Pup for me (an ex-girlfriend's mum had 2 miniature Schnauser brothers - Ben and Mitchell), and pass on my sympathy to Mrs. Ped because she deserves a medal!

Hi Steve, thanks so much for this. Great that you signed in and took the time to comment. The Clubman is such a good car. Some tips didn't make the final edit as the video was way too long. One of those was the importance of regular uploads. That way KZbin and your followers know to expect videos. A good insight; honest and truthful. It's a shame that the hurdles to jump through now to build a channel are so high. I had a brief stab at it, but work got in the way. Pete, hand on heart - I think you've achieved a massive amount, because of the fact that the channel built its audience just when the overlords of YT and Google made it more tricky to build an audience. Good work, keep it up.

Excellent and informative content as usual. You are so right when you say that ultimately you need to enjoy what you do and be yourself. Being ourselves is what makes us unique. I love video photography more so as a hobby and whilst I have a KZbin channel I don’t set out to gain thousands and thousands of subscribers or to even think about making any money, I originally created the channel so other people could watch my work and it was a good way for family that live away to also view the videos I made with the boys. And that’s just it because a lot of my content is centred around the kids then I ensure that a lot is not visible just to search on but available to family and friends via links. At the end of the day it’s about filming and creating something because we enjoy what we do. I love your drive and passion and that comes through on all of your content and your so informative and you know how to engage with your audiences. And because you enjoy what you do, it’s that which makes for great content for us your subscribers to continue to watch. Wishing you well in 2020my friend.

Pete hope you don’t mind me adding to this rather good video, as you know I love the technical side of filming but here are a few extra tips I would like to add which might also help davinci resolve is a professional video editor, there is a free version which does a lot and you can upgrade to a paid version if you want to take it further. (Personally I use Adobe Premier) or you could copy the videos on to an iPad an edit there if you don’t have a Mac. I would also recommend watching a few KZbin channels about KZbin such as VidIQ and darryl eaves and some basic filming techniques (for example video transitions and cuts, 101 of filming) Use a lav mic (rode smartLav plus around £50) and plug into your mobile phone which will be the same as a wireless setup If vlogging with a phone use a lav mic plugged into your phone. You can get away with poor video but not poor sound. I use a cannon 80d for the external and like you Sony for in car, best mounts i have found if you want a really steady mount is a fat gecko (3 suction cup is best) and this also splits into 2 separate mounts. If you are going to use a DSLR either a mirrorless sony or Panasonic is best but remember to factor in the price of a lens and make sure it has a microphone jack. My channel is in the position Pete spoke about where you have a good backlog of work, you have the editing skills and are talking with car dealers. The truth of the matter is most dealerships will not respond to emails, won’t return your calls and in general there primary concern is selling cars and not doing social media BUT knock on enough doors for long enough and you might have a bit of luck. At this stage it’s about staying motivated and don’t let the knock backs get you down. when you get the yes come and borrow a car it’s amazing.

A very nice video it will give a lot of people who are motivated an understanding of the level of effort and commitment needed before anything really kicks off... and the first 2 years will be a real struggle unless you have that magic formula of uniqueness, I always say to people it's about emotive content... because it's the only way you connect with people. That doesn't mean you need to over dramatise yourself or the situation, because people see through that so it's a difficult balance. Others have lots of cash to flood their channel with new cars they buy and flip... (no names) but personally that's a short term thing.... and you won't get long term subscribers.... Good luck you have been doing a great job....

Thank you for taking the time to walk us through your journey to date. I really enjoy how your videos flow, what proportion of time (relative to the video length) do you spend on the storyboard and planning element? Keep up the hard work - it’s ace!
@PetrolPed5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this Jon. The answer to your question is not as long as I should 😂 I always try to think of a story or angle for the video. I will do a simple storyboard if I have time or if it is a special car. My reviews have a generic flow that they all loosely follow 👍

What about Patreon? I noticed one car guy had that kind of set up. I have used it to get instruction from artists. One who taught me a lot also had her account linked with Amazon, so if I went to Amazon through her Patreon channel she received payment. I don't know how it worked for her but from my point of view, I buy stuff from Amazon constantly, particularly now, and I was happy to get there through her channel if it helped her out.

It's been a very interesting few years in the auto YTuber world. And, the cream of content has risen to the top, ie. it 'aint the millennials - Shmug would never divulge info as to how to be a YTuber (too precious and OCD about his 11yr olds market share). True and hard working petrolheads don't want 'Olly Higuys' splurging his wad on the counter. Keep it real and normal and you'll be on to a winner.

Great video, thanks for making it! Just one question please: when first starting out, how do you get your videos out there? Do you post links on motoring forums or is that considered bad practice? Thanks again.
@PetrolPed2 жыл бұрын
Motoring forums if they let you, FB owners groups, paid promotion on FB and YT, asking people to share 👍

Interesting video, thanks for sharing. What I missed though, is the subject of upload frequency and committing to it. Do you have a planned frequency and, if so, how hard is it to commit to it?
@PetrolPed5 жыл бұрын
I did do a bit on that but it didn't make the final edit. I think it important to have a regular upload time. I start with every Friday at 6pm. That way your followers and KZbin know there is content dropping so will tune in. It is a big commitment. I have missed 1 Friday upload in 4 years !! I now do 3 uploads a week. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6pm. It take a lot of planning ahead to get the cars and think of the subjects. Then you need the time to film that and the 3-5 hours of editing per video 😬

@@PetrolPed I had a go at it about 10 years ago and I'm thinking of picking it up again, and found committing to it the most challenging. Proper planning makes all the difference. I'd also be interested to know what you do yourself and what you outsource, if you allow me to pick your brain a bit more.

Sorry to point this out, but when I see it I have to say... but you spelt 'audiance' wrong, it should be audience... other then that great video full of useful info. All your videos are great to watch actually. Bob

I like the 'girl on swiss roads' method to growing her channel; lots of leg, eventually culminating in striping off to her bikini!! Not quite sure if it would be the same ratings booster for you though Ped! 😄
