CORRECTION: Unfortunately, the specific upload times I mentioned were a mirage after all. I reran the study and the spike is gone. What this means for us is that the time we upload our Shorts does not matter. And that is really good to know! One less aspect we don’t need to spend time contemplating. You cannot screw up the success of your Short by uploading at a wrong time.

@@EricaDiebold Great question Erica! First off, you should never infringe copyrights. So only use music that you are allowed to use. But I think you are not actually referring to copyrighted or not copyrighted but instead just any nice song versus popular songs at the top of the charts, right? If you use music that is popular then the chance is high that the viewer knows and likes the song and thus has a better viewing experience. I cannot study this with the data I have but it is almost a no brainer that such music can boost the success of your Shorts. I hope this helps! Cheers, Nico

What I like about shorts: 1. They are quick and easy to make 2. They are great when I have something to say but enough to say to make a substantial video 3. You get another traffic source: The first and only shorts video I uploaded has gotten the most views out of all videos I uploaded since my return 4. I can use them to summarize some points from my longer videos then refer the viewers to that longer video with a link in the description 5. They are a good way to help increase my upload frequency 6. Channels similar to mine don't usually use them so they help me to stand out

Since yt shows your shorts to anyone, people who are not concerned with the subject stop looking very quickly of course! So I don't know if it's a good thing for the channel.

My pleasure Laurine! Don’t worry about it. There is no such thing as the channel being dragged down as a whole because of Shorts not producing as much watch time as regular videos. The only things to consider are what I discuss about main vs second channel starting at 3:20. Other than that Shorts and regular videos are quite independent from each other.

@@classicalguitar-passion Indeed. There should not be an issue with using the same title. However, the way you optimize Shorts is a little different. As I explained starting at 8:00 you can focus on more competitive terms when you look them up in Morningfame. And since those are shorter search terms, you have more space to add words to the title that are intriguing. The latter is super important for Shorts!

The problem is the main videos are filmed in horizontal and to break them up into short videos doesn't work as well as recording them in vertical. I tried making a SHORTS only section on our channel. It shows a preview of our shorts but when I publish, nothing. They don't show up. In traffic sources I see that we're getting views from Shorts though. Also, I'm questioning if they're worth it because it's about #10 on the list. And we're releasing one every day we don't have a regular video.

Indeed, you need to get a bit creative with repurposing your videos. You may edit scenes in a way that you show the right portion of the original video and move the center around to keep showing the important parts in the vertical cutout. Weird about the playlist. Did you use the standard Shorts playlist instead of creating your own playlist?

That’s great to hear Herman! Oh yea, quick tips is something that people want and which finally has a good place I recon. I didn’t try it often enough yet myself but it’s reassuring to hear that from you. Btw, the 20 seconds was about the average view duration. So the Shorts can be longer. I didn’t study how long but ideally not much longer than that. Indeed, my data is not representative of all niches but my finding was across all niches that were part of my study. So I think it’s a universal thing.

Great question pal! Tags have no impact in this. And the category neither. Most of it is data you cannot influence. Indeed, most likely Shorts will evolve more in the entertainment part of KZbin. But I have seen many channels which successfully do how-to Shorts! Tinker Man Mick who I mentioned here is one of them. In my last newsflash you probably remember the Shorts channel about real estate. And for your videos in particular in which you have great storytelling, you can really see that from an infotainment perspective. I bet you can make teasers for a full length video like I suggested at 6:39 !

They only look at the individual video. There is no overall channel score or anything like that. Over on the Creator Insider channel the team from KZbin’s algorithm team have stressed that multiple times by the way. So it’s official!

I recently started uploading shorts. Out of the few videos, only one made it to the shorts shelf and resulted in almost three hundred views and five new subscribers. Please can I ask some advice as I'm not sure what best to do. I've been making YT content for the past 2 years and built up a tidy following but this year I became bored with the game I was playing, and views were dwindling anyway so I changed to a new game. I know a lot of my existing subscribers are not interested in the new game and so I'm basically starting from scratch and trying to build a new subscriber base in my new game. I've been using your tool to help me make the best video with the best keywords and titles, yet I'm still not doing any better. I've had a few videos go much better than others and even my latest series is doing OK on some days, but terrible on others. I'm really at a loss and don't know what to do. Please can you help? Switching the game is never easy indeed. As you say, it is difficult to move your existing audience over to watch your new gameplay unless the two games are very similar. So you generally need a lot of patience with the switch. But in any way, I think from the looks of it you have a pretty good understanding of how to make your videos valuable. Your thumbnails convey that. Most likely it makes sense to drill even deeper in this regard. Next Sunday I will actually upload a video in which I explain a step by step process how to do that. I bet that gives you new insights into how to proceed. Other than that there could be all sorts of things you may be able to improve. In the end I think you would benefit from paid 1 on 1 consulting to really have an expert taking the time to drill deep with you. I can refer you if you would like.

What I have found interesting about YT shorts is that I've uploaded quite a bit of content. None of it has performed well BUT that _same_ content did *great* on TikTok, i.e. _it's optimized for retention_

Nice! Yes, that makes sense to me and can very well happen. KZbin’s Shorts algorithm is definitely not the same as TikTok’s one and also the audience on TikTok is definitely more developed than the Shorts audience on KZbin. It’s early days for KZbin after all. But I suspect that KZbin will catch up to TikTok in a sense that videos will perform similarly on both platforms. But in any way, that’s only speculation and we will see how it turns out. :)

That’s was really useful I didn’t know u can turn off notifications. I have a main channel and I’m going to start uploading shorts because I’ve had a lot of success on tiktok. The view duration was worrying me because the Morning Fame workshop tabs show importance of view duration for overall channel but I’ve heard that doesn’t count. It’s view duration for each video, the overall channel view duration does not effect your overall channel performance. Your thought?

Awesome, I am glad I could give you good info Russell! Yes, indeed. All numbers are actually not relevant on the channel level but only on the video level. That is by the way the perspective of the KZbin algorithms. And with Morningfame’s Workshop tab for example I show channel averages nonetheless because from our perspective as the creator it allows up to understand our general performance and where we have weak points which we need to improve. So two different perspectives really. So no worries about Shorts impacting our channels. :)

Great question pal! I unfortunately have no definitive answer but I once did a data study about hashtags for regular videos and the only hashtags that actually did have a noticeable effect were those that are used by a current trend. You know like the ones that refer to e.g. a challenge that is big at the moment. So I would try to use this kind of hashtags for Shorts as well. If you are doing a Shorts for a currently big challenge then why not adding it to the title in a way that it is part of the title and not just added in the end. Something like „I did the #plankchallenge and ripped my muscles“ Weird example but you get the idea.

Absolutely, keep notifications on! My recommendation to turn them off was only for a) testing the waters if you are still unsure about how well Shorts fit your channel or b) if you publish Shorts in bulk. Always minding our subscribers basically. But if you want them to see your Shorts then notifications of course play an important role. :)

Since regular subscribers expect longer videos, I agree that shorts will annoy them. I tried 5 shorts on my channel, and on each I lost 1 to 3 subs, without gaining any! Will not upload shorts anymore.

Indeed, Shorts are a very different viewing experience and for that reason may or may not be a good fit for the channel. I agree, it’s probably best that you sit this one out. But in case you want to give it another try in the future, you can test Shorts again with notifications turned off - see 6:00 - to ensure that your existing subscribers are not annoyed by them.

Sorry, I don’t know where the option is on mobile. But since I created this video, KZbin updated how they send out notifications for Shorts. They realized that to many notifications are indeed a problem - basically the same thinking that I had when recommending to turn them off. Now KZbin sends them out for Shorts much more cautiously and hence you don’t necessarily have to turn them off anymore.

Excellent questions pal! Yes, that resolution should work. And indeed, your view velocity will be low because most of your subscribers will miss your Shorts. But look at mine. I turned notifications off and nonetheless they already climbed up to 1k views each. :)

Sorry, I actually found out that the times I mentioned were a mirage after all. So that means the time you upload a Short does not matter at all. And in regards to your friends Short, it must be for another reason. Maybe the topic of the Short was something many more people are interested in.

Absolutely my pleasure Tatiana! Do you mean that your Shorts showed up in the regular Uploads playlist as well? Shorts do indeed show up / get promoted like regular videos as well. This is normal. Shorts have this additional place for Shorts only. But if you prefer to not have Shorts show up too much elsewhere like I prefer, turn off the notifications to reduce it to a minimum.

@@autozakordon Indeed, that still happens. Although they don’t get a notification, they can still stumble upon your Short while scrolling through the Home feed. And that is by the way the reason why I gave the recommendation to have at least 48 hours between your last regular upload and your Short. ( See 12:43 ) There is no comparable option for Home like for the notifications unfortunately. But I don’t see that as an issue because stumbling on them wouldn’t annoy your subscribers.

Wow, this is crazy! Well yea, this is not surprising. For the Shorts algorithm each video has to gain its success independently. You may hit it big with one and not at all with the next. You can’t really build on top of the success of the previous one other than doing more Shorts around the same topic plus doing the SEO part right as I explained here. What was your successful Short about if I may ask?

Yes, feel free to do that. Of course, make sure that you re-edit your videos to make them a good experience for your viewers. It requires a bit creativity to pick out the good part to fit into a short video and to properly fill the vertical format.

@@OurPhilippineWorld Sorry that I wasn’t precise enough. Yes, duplicate content is an important part of KZbin’s terms. You can probably understand where this is coming from because in general this would result in the platform getting spammed by footage that adds no value. KZbin must keep their viewers in mind. Without them being happy with how they experience KZbin, we as creators had no platform to get outreach on. But back to the repurposing of your old footage, think more about recycling it. You cannot simply upload your old videos as Shorts anyway. Make something new out of the things you have. Edit them in a way that it really creates a new experience for your viewers. If you always have your viewers in mind and want to deliver something valuable rather than just looking at ways to, you know, create content the lazy way, then your audience will thank you for that.

Good point Harley! Such a proper status section would be really useful! Well, the Shorts classifier is still not very robust I believe. From all the discussions I had with youtubers I am sure that the classifier misses quite a number of videos that should be classified as a Short. But to clarify, Shorts always work like regular videos as well. So you can watch a Short in the regular viewer like any other video and it can still show up in the new Shorts viewing experience. The ultimate verification that the classification worked is if you see views from the Shorts traffic source. Either in KZbin Studio or now in the Morningfame Algorithm tab as well.

Fingers crossed for their success Andrey! Feel free to turn off notifications like I explained in the video. This will certainly ensure that you don’t spam your subs. The Short will only appear in that Shorts playlist once you published it. It’s just a way to double check. Would uploading a short as a teaser possibly steal views from the full length video? If subscribers see the short, it might satisfy their curiosity and choose not to watch the full length video with the same topic. Thoughts?

Excellent question Amy and John! I’ll certainly be able to observe that with this video here because I published 3 of the questions as Shorts yesterday. But I think it’s in the end a matter of how well you do it. Like real movie trailers create hunger for the full movie. That said, I recommend to turn off notifications for the Shorts - see 6:00 - to not annoy your existing audience with notifications for the Shorts. This way only few of your subscribers will discover the Shorts via Home. I would see that as a kind of safety net to make sure that most of your subscribers are still curious to watch the full length video. These teasers are meant to draw in new viewers after all. :)

It could do that as well as make someone think a video isn't worth giving a watch, but a well-crafted teaser will show just enough to make the audience wonder what will happen in the full video.

I'm actually curious if there is any relation between your recommendation when to post (9-10AM Pacific Time) and when the video is taking off (~ another day)? Is this still "kind of magic" or actually we can assume the successful Shorts should aim actually in a good taking off time instead of upload time? But how to estimate it? The time between upload and take of isn't constant right?

Indeed, the time at which Shorts take off varies a lot as far as I can tell without having crunched the data for this in particular. Although I found an interesting time slot for the best time to upload, the biggest takeaway here is that the upload time does not matter. As you know it’s a common question of when you should upload and it’s good to know that we don’t have to optimize that. Just create the best possible Shorts you can produce and publish it any time. 😃✌️

I am happy to hear that pal! :) No, even the publish time that I wondered if it was a mirage or real is not important after all. So the publish time does not matter. For the key search terms to consider for your Shorts title, you can apply the same thinking as for KZbin SEO that you do for regular videos. Here are many techniques with which you can find terms that describe your video topic well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXXIdaacncx8hZI However, you need to go as far as I go in this video since I made it for optimizing regular videos. You only need to find a short search term that describes your video topic well and then you are done. Like “funny cat videos”.

I have seen many how to channels that made this work for them. Mick who I mentioned in this video is one of them. It’s of course hard to say if doing Shorts make sense long-term for all how to channels but it cannot hurt to try. I assume you would upload them on your main channel, right? In that case I recommend to turn off notifications like I did to “safely” test the waters. See 6:00 for that.

Well, the first step is that the video gets classified as a Short. You can find out how to test this as part of my section starting at 8:00 using the special Shorts playlist. And if it is successfully classified as such, many factors play a role. It has to be about a topic for example that many people are interested in. That’s also what I explain starting at 8:00.
