That is funny. This is probably a rumor, police purposefully lay out items out in the open like alcohol in hopes that someone would pick them up, and they arrest them.

I still remember the early stages of let's play videos on KZbin. Back in the day when companies tried to give out specific permissions to content creators, you for example had to fill in a form with EA to register your YT channel with them, so they wouldn't strike you 😅

The US has similar issues. Like calling the cops when payment involves the use of a rare, but legal 2 dollar bill. Or fully prosecuting a little boy who is barely over halfway to 10 years old for stealing...a pack of gum. Or cops who steal a citizen's okra plants, claiming they are actually Marijuana. And that's not counting all the times they opened fire or beat someone to death before asking questions.

Which just goes to the point that the Japanese and Japan are not the special ubermensch animoo lovers and weebs have bought into like good little propagandized snow monkeys, but just mensches who will mess you up for their own set of reasons.

The difference here is... the US has fair use protections. Japan does not. What you are discussing is Police going above and beyond what the law is *supposed* to allow them to do. Meanwhile, in Japan, arresting someone for lets plays is not only legal, but actually legally justified as copyright infringement. Trust me, whatever you think is going on here in the US, it would be 100x worse if it was happening in Japan. Not to downplay the shit show here on the homefront, its just to say that "there is a difference between whats happening here."

Yeah, so in Japan, the rules on Lets Plays, reviews, and other fair use ideas doesn't exist. Some publishers do extend explicit permissions to upload reviews, gameplay footage, etc. There are large agencies in Japan that also negotiate the rights to play games/show gameplay footage too.

I demand all the KZbinrs who haven't played the original Steins;Gate visual novel start uploading their own first playthroughs of that game in protest to this arrest (not any of the re-releases or spin-offs like the game in the article, Especially not S;G: Elite). Totally want to see that just for the sake of protest, not because it's an amazing story if you can make it through the whole thing and I just want more people to experience it.

Some steam VN games has mention in license that you can basically stream few first chapter that you don't spoil the story. Basically VN don't have anything more than story so don't buy and just watch some playthrough / all ending video. That's basically watching movie in stream with audience. Note: Usually those that have more game play elements than just selecting story branches are more ok with streaming.

The video game medium allows for many things: you can make comics, movies, music basically every other medium can be recreated in a video game and i do have to say. Copyright law isn't designed with video games in mind, but all other mediums would suffer if a youtuber where to completely reupload them. Answer this: would you buy a video game comic if you saw everything in it?

The legal system really needs to adjust to the existence of the Internet. This whole thing recently about copyright, KZbin and even the AI controversy, are terribly stupid and entirely due to outdated laws. You can't really enforce a lot of copyright rights on the internet. If you put something on the internet, it's there forever. Chances are it has been copied, used in data sets, screen shot, and outright used by someone for something.

I wonder if he can get bailed out by donations from his fans, and oversea supporters. I do find this case really sad. 2 years is a lot. I can't imagine having 2 birthdays in jail. I wonder why just demonotizing the video is not enough. KZbin does it automatically all the time, with its scanning, and I'm sure he probably barely made enough to pay his lawyer with ad revenue he got from it too. I think he made the videos purely because he loves the game and anime, and not for the measly ad revenue. The big companies who can afford a far better lawyer are being real bullies to their actual fan.

TBF, they were spoiling the endings. Like, I upload visual novel music, and I have to try my best to not spoil anything. And Steins;Gate Dating Sim? That vn was serious as hell from what I've heard, it'd make no sense to do that. but then again Fate is gigantic so I guess it does make sense to do it.

@seki108 Жыл бұрын
Um, even the original VN had straightforward romance, so it's not that weird to branch out for a spin off. Of course, the whole core premise is is different timelines essentially, so the romance VN does take place in the more peaceful timelines seen in a few endings of the original and other spin offs....just for some extra distance.

I actually think calling uploading a Virtual Novel playthrough crime is totally justifiable. It's just like uploading a copy of a book as a PDF to download for free. You're giving people the ability to "read" the VN for free. This only applies if the video isn't edited to cut scenes and actually make good content instead of just being a screen share of you reading though.
@Shalakor
@Shalakor Жыл бұрын
But we're also taking about a game that likely has multiple routes you need to make choices for. There is player input. Besides, news articles are copyrighted, and are linear, too, so I guess anyone sharing this story on KZbin and showing footage of the text on the website is a pirate. Time to lock Pat up. ...But, seriously, do we even know if it was the copyright holders themselves that sent the police after this guy in the first place, or is the legal system trying to make a statement of their own volition?
@Rubywing4
@Rubywing4 Жыл бұрын
I think I've heard/read that the crime rate in Japan is very low, at least when it comes to serious crimes like theft, robbery, murder, assault, etc., probably because Japanese people are typically raised to take politeness and honor VERY seriously and not inconvenience anyone. So I can totally believe that the only real reason why people in Japan are getting arrested for uploading gameplay videos is because Japan already has dealt with all the serious crime and the police are now bored and will do anything to keep their jobs, even if it's about arresting a simple KZbin gamer or interrogating a 6-year old who accidentally stole an eraser. The police aren't necessarily malicious. They're just bored and want something to do lol.

I love how you call it the 'seedy underbelly' of Japan when really this is just how the Japanese have, are, and will always continue to operate and it's not really clandestine in any way, but very open and unapologetically open about. The Japanese rigorously defending their property from all threats foreign and domestic? Next you'll tell me they really like Ramen noodles over there!
