I'm in the same boat as Charlie. I had a lot of respect for Jirard and normally I don't believe one mistake ruins that. Now what DOES get rid of that is not taking the L, constantly lying, bout it, and threatening. You can tell who a person is when they are backed into a corner. Shameful and disgusting.
@FlameHricane5 ай бұрын
Yea, it definitely looks worse as it goes on (especially with the bad response), but I still personally remain in the middle for several reasons. The money actually being donated is part of that. It's understandable that many people are absolutely dogpiling Jirard, but I have to stress that it's VERY important to remember that he is not the only one responsible for this outcome. Many people are painting it like he is which I find odd. It was mentioned in the call that Jirard was having some internal conflict with his family regarding the matter in the past couple of months and nobody knows the details of this, but it's safe to assume that this has a part in why there are inconsistencies between the call and the response as well as his statements after learning that the money was still there. Another thing; after the first set of videos, people deducted that he didn't have ill intent. At this moment and time, it still hasn't been proven that he did. Most of the videos after the first did not add much (if any at all) new information, yet people keep shifting what they think based on what they say. Karl goes from saying he never accused him of embezzlement to now saying he did when it's pretty obvious that when Jirard says "we don't touch any of it" and "it all goes to charity", it's referring to the fact that any form of support is going towards the main pool (which again, many people have said that it's completely reasonable to use those funds for administrative costs). Lack of clarification =/= ill intent through a perceived inconsistency. This was a very weak point so to see them fill the video with clip after clip after clip thinking they had their "gottem" moment, it doesn't come off right. The response wasn't great, but lets not pretend like the many people who curated it didn't consider this aspect. People have ALSO said that they don't doubt that they could pass a present-day audit so why is the argument still on missing money? Personally, it feels like a lot of goal-post shifting. The only thing they should be arguing at this point is the charity fraud gray area and if they did all of this only for "charity PR". Now, I don't know about you, but I highly doubt that the intention over the course of 10 years of raising money for a cause they have a personal stake in was for charity PR. Let it be known that letting the money sit there for that long is not good, but the accusations just went off the rails after that. The embezzlement claim especially is a huge red flag to me. Regardless of the details of the response; the truth is until someone can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they had other plans for the money besides charity, it is not fair to say that they are guilty to the degree that people are making it out to be. It's as simple as that really and we will see if anything in the coming weeks brings a definitive answer to this question.

If he hasn’t spent any of it, it hasn’t been embezzled. It’s weird, for sure, that this money has just been sitting in an account for who knows how long. @NateDates using charity money to offset production costs aren't embezzlement though. All the production costs are accounted for and he has been audited twice and then checking up and getting the "all clear" from the IRS. Like, there's no wonder misinformation is being spread on social media with you guys who just give up your frontal cortex in the name of parasocial relationships. While that was part of the reason he linked her medical records as rando's were posting about it, the real reason was to use his mother as a shield against the actual investigation. He stated multiple times they had contributed to charity, and while it was a lie that any of it was monetary. It is true they donated his mom's brain and spinal cord to charity. Yeah, the only reason the money was still there was because they were waiting for the moment they were sure they could get away with it. He said a few times through his videos that there isn’t actually any proof the money was in the account, and they only had Jirard’s word. But for the rest of us, do we really believe that someone who would lie about donating money to charity would just leave that money untouched for years? He took it. Obviously, he took it. And the money he ultimately donated was from his own savings or was money he was able to scrounge up elsewhere.

My grandmother had dementia towards the end of her life in and passed in 2020 because of it. I've seen what it can do to a family so this story is really personal in so many ways. The fact that it has taken Jirard this long to donate the money and his behavior during his response video truly says a lot about his character. I always get the thought of "Maybe that money throughout the years could've gone towards helping my grandma with her dementia. "Hell, not just my grandma , but that money could've helped so many people struggling with it but the fact that he chose NOW to do it after public scrutiny is truly deplorable. He seemed like a good guy at the time but this is truly disappointing.

yeah the tricky thing with cases like this is that even with the money finally donated, that's a decade of research that could've been done by now. Time the families will never get back

My grandfather died of temporal dementia the only reason I ever gave that c********* money was because his mom died of the same thing and he was doing something about it to find out now that the money wasn't going towards anything is so enraging to me like I don't make much money and I gave him as much as I possibly could for it to do absolutely nothing it's disgusting how he uses his mother's memory to do this and steal money from people

Based on other reporting here, I think I know what’s going on. It seems like Jirard’s rich family had been running a charity scam through their golf tourney for a while now. Like they underreported the amount made from donations there and kept a small amount. Once Jirard started doing Indieland donations, that larger sum was used to hide ALL the money collected via the golf tourney, and they’ve been stealing that. Once direct donations got big enough that was ALSO used to hide his twitch donations and merch being pocketed instead of donated. I think it’s fair to say close to a million dollars has actually been donated to his organization, but he’s just pocketed the difference with some shady accounting.

I think what you’re saying. But it’s probably actually his dad or something doing the scam. Would explain why he wasn’t aware of the situation for so long, but also why he’s trying really hard to do damage control now.
@joshm93635 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case, nor would I be surprised if all the fund raising was genuinely done with the best intentions for the stated cause. That’s not a defence of them as best case scenario is that they neglectfully procrastinated on doing their one job with the money they raised, a chunk of which they very likely wouldn’t have if the donors weren’t lied to. That’s definitely plenty bad enough that it needs addressing.

I'm glad the "all money will go to the charity" part was highlighted. When I heard that statement and yet also heard that they've taken money for admin costs I thought it would be an important point, yet people just gloss over it. I know that operational costs are a thing, but maybe don't say that all the money will go to charity and you won't touch a penny then.

It's actually insane how terrible of a response the completionist gave. The claims before were that there was gross negligence and incompetence in the charity cause they never decided where to send the money, and Jirard just wasn't paying attention to it. But now it's pretty clear that they were outright malicious and lied about everything going on, while pretending that doing nothing with the money was no big deal (and actually somehow a good thing) despite it being "not fucking cool" just a few weeks ago.

I worked with a guy who you would guess would be the LAST person to lie, cheat, or steal. Turns out he was stealing thousands of dollars a month. When he got caught I didn't even want to believe it but the evidence was overwhelming. They had been on to him for weeks and stacked up a ton of evidence. It was irrefutable. So for all of those who are saying, "nah, he's a good guy! He's not capable of this!", don't let him off the hook just because he "seems like a good guy." Remove that bias and look at the evidence. People will surprise you.

As a longtime viewer of the Completionist channel, I only found out about this situation when they posted the response video. I only made it about a third of the way through the response video before I had to stop and turn it off because I was so viscerally uncomfortable. For reasons I couldn’t pinpoint, it just made my skin crawl. To hear that at the end of that same video Jirard went as far as to threaten legal action against the investigative journalists who broke the story is shocking to me, especially since he claims to be a journalist himself. I was already seriously considering unsubbing just for how weirdly uneasy the first part of the response video made me (I’ve learned not to ignore my gut when I get that feeling), but hearing that was the final nail in the coffin for me. I can get my video game journalism elsewhere.

They should do their due diligence before piping up and tbh I wasn’t totally persuaded that Jirard was a scumbag until seeing the videos published just a day before this one came out. Lots of tweets from other KZbinrs came from before that date and I def could see myself saying the same thing had I been in their shoes. What they say now will be telling though, given that Girard basically has now admitted to embezzlement whether knowingly or not (that and the autopsy report as well 🤦♂️).
