KZbin star and vlog squad member ‪@JeffWittek‬ suffered a horrific injury resulting from a filmed stunt gone wrong. The accident caused severe facial injuries and nearly cost him his eye. Since then, he’s endured several painful surgeries. From the scars on his face, his millions of followers could tell he’d suffered from something terrible, but what people couldn’t see was that he was also suffering on the inside. His mental health began to deteriorate, and he was experiencing a different kind of pain he had never felt before in his entire life-depression, anxiety, and serious emotional stress.
“I’m obsessed with my profession,” Jeff said to Daniel G. Amen, MD, when he met with the psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and founder of Amen Clinics. “I just want everything to be perfect. and just be the best I can be when I put out these videos.”
During the pandemic, Jeff turned 30 and had gotten to a point in his professional life where he wanted to create something bigger. “I can’t just be making these silly, stupid videos anymore,” he said. He agreed to do a stunt for a friend’s video that was going to be monumental. It involved an excavator, a massive piece of machinery used in construction that spins. In the middle of a lake, Jeff was going to be dangling on a wakeboard attached to the end of a rope on the excavator’s arm as it spun as fast as possible.
It sounded like a lot of fun-at least for a KZbinr like Jeff who is used to doing crazy stuff most people would never do-until he spun wildly out of control and went flying face-first into the excavator itself.
Jeff broke his hip, had 9 fractures in his skull and face, and had a full orbital blowout fracture. He couldn’t see out of one of his eyes. “Everybody thought I was gonna die,” he recalls. “I was pale white, and I lost a lot of blood.”

@@nonnag Id say the Dr is pretty correct in saying it’s one of the most important parts. Impulse control, emotional regulation, social interaction, problem solving, and many more important cognitive functions are all functions of the frontal lobes. Other parts of the brain such as the temporal lobes will only impact things such as language. The frontal lobe is in charge of so many important functions that are crucial for day to day living like education, socializing, and employment.

I feel such empathy for him especially living with a terminal illness where you can tell people what you’re going through but they just can’t understand and it’s not that you expect people to understand because if you don’t go through it yourself you never will. But, when you are sick you tend to understand a lot more of the emotional side effects, ramifications and pain that others go through. I wish I could just talk with him because I am under quarantine because of this pandemic until next year. All I want to do is let him know that he’s so lucky to be alive and he will have such an ability to make an impact on so many people even though it’s a tragedy we are so adaptable that he will always find a way to turn it into something positive (once he heals). Not only will it help him but his journey will help other people it will also continue to help to heal him mentally and spiritually allowing him to feel happiness again. I’m not saying his current friends are not supportive at all. I said I hope he finds a MORE supportive circle. Paying your medical bills and checking up every once in a while isn’t enough in my opinion. I think Jeff would be better off with non famous friends or at least mature people. If this was the case, he wouldn’t be in this situation to begin with. Again, my opinion. No need to get defensive. Nothing anyone says will change my views of the vlog squad.

I noticed something very bizarre at a young age. I noticed that if I judged someone for something specific, shortly after I would experience that exact same thing. Not physical things but character traits. I was in elementary school when I criticized someone for acting rude to someone then I noticed I was just as rude to someone else. I can't remember anymore specific ones but I genuinely believed that if you judge or criticize someone for being or acting a certain way, life will put those traits on yourself so you can feel what it's like and so you don't judge anymore. We all go through the same but different things together. As an adult I believe I was an intuitive kid who was learning who karma was but didn't have a word for it.

Agreed. And this is why I disagree with Amen's advice about suing. I'm from the UK where we don't have a culture of suing, but I believe that Jeff should sue. Growing older with brain trauma can cause difficulties later on (I speak from experience) and care can be expensive. Also loss of earnings. I know that healthcare in the US is expensive. Jeff should make sure he is financially able to support himself if he needs ongoing care. His KZbin career won't last forever.

There's something called a growth mindset where, if you believe that you can improve your brain function and you work hard at it, you can change your brain. And talking/writing about your experience, making videos about it (like Jeff Wittek), and going to therapy all help you overcome trauma/ptsd. You deserve that 8 figure settlement. Probably more.

@@christianf2084 Omg you're so young! You can totally improve your brain! Brains don't even become fully developed until you're 25. What they talk about in the video is how Jeff damaged the front part of the brain (the prefrontal cortex), that part is the last part to grow. It's the part that helps you make rational decisions and think about consequences for your actions. Since you're so young, that part of your brain is not even done growing yet! The part of the brain that you're using right now is the amygdala (the emotional part of the brain) which is why emotions feel SO intense. Intense emotions + can't be rational = impulsive. DON"T LOSE FAITH. Things can totally improve! I used to be suicidal. Like DEEP depression to the point that my hair was falling out. I went through deep depression 2xs in my life. If you can find a good therapist and you actually put in the effort and WANT to improve, you can totally turn your situation around. I know my opinion doesn't matter, but I BELIEVE IN YOU. Things will get better.

I legit cried when Jeff started describing his symptoms. To go through general anesthesia 6-7 times is a very big deal. because the biggest complication of GA is coma. There's always a chance that the patient might never wake up. God i can’t even imagine how much pain this wonderful man has been going through for the last one year

General anesthesia is very safe. There is not a “big” chance of not waking up, especially for a young and healthy person like Jeff. There is like a 1 in 200.000 chance of death and about 0.005% chance of prolonged coma.

What if this time I won’t wake up or some complication? Personally I had to be under it 6 times and it definitely fucks with you. My doctor said I had to do all those 6 but as I got older and so more doctors, so many told me it was unnecessary for me to be under 6 times at a young of 14-17. Doctors fuck up all the time. Don’t just rely on one doctors opinion get multiple before doing something that has some mild risks.

The first time I ever saw Jeff was during that disastrous Frenemies interview. I could tell something was 'off'. I have a TBI myself with frontal lobe damage and I could recognise Jeff's difficulties with black and white thinking and how impulsive he was with his reaction. The holes on the image aren't actual physical holes. They are zones of low blood flow which shows lack of brain function. My father had a stroke this last year, he lost movement on his right side and couldn't walk, speech was very impacted. Now a year later, he has blown my mind away and is fully walking without a cane or anything, speech and right arm mobility is so improved. He fully is self sustaining of himself. He literally is my biggest inspiration. He's so strong, worked so hard to recover. It just proved to me that even if you have 3 strokes (that's what the scan found) 2 little ones and then one major one that was the one that sent him to the ER when walking home that day, thank God two girls saw my dad fall over while walking his bike. They got him a ambulance. They are amazing. We had them over for gifts later on. Anyways, this has shown me just how much the brain can adapt and heal and utilize itself. It's facinating and I want to get into studying the brain as a living since my grandma (who shares a birthday with me) was diagnosed with a very rare form of dementia that took her from us with 2.5 years.... She was herself, sharp minded, and then Bam! She was effected by this brain disease and it was so hard but she was so strong and we still had her there just her brain wasn't working correctly at all... Last night we had with her, somehow like a miracle, she had an hour or so of utter clarity, she before this night had 2 moments of snapping out if it and being self aware and realizing she's got a brain disease and then she'd list off accurate memories of things that have occured and it was mind boggling and equally emotional. Those were short and abrupt. This last moment she came back to, had her amazing sarcasm, being very loving like she was, and genuinely got to relax and enjoy the night with us until we drove back from the hospice care facility. Then the next morning we got a call she was passing, March 4th last year, Luckily the remaining rest of extended family got to see and be with her. We got in the parking lot when it was official she passed. We just made it there and parked after driving from a town over but was a minute late.. In that moment we really realized just how amazing that moment of mental clarity and comfort she had with us was the best girl we never expected, and we were lucky enough to share with her... (I'm sorry, I'm rambling on about personal stuff) but it just all motivates me so much to study the human brain and human biology and physiology.

I’m literally just one big mental illness ;-; lol I take meds for my anxiety, OCD, and depression, and I’ve been transitioning for gender dysphoria, so now I’m like fine. I can’t explain how, once I did all of those things, I felt happy for the first time in my entire life. I was happy, and realizing that that’s how normal people feel. There are people who, since the beginning of their life, felt that happiness.

i had a traumatic accident when i was younger and i developed really bad anxiety. It’s been 10 years since and only about 2 years ago i finally learned how to control myself a bit. I didn’t even think about the outcome with his mental health, i seriously don’t wish anxiety on anyone. Jeff is so strong.

I tried not to cry but I couldn’t control my tears, seeing Jeff talking about his experience with depression and how his life changed since the accident got me in my feels. I tried putting myself in his shoes and couldn’t take it. The stress and anxiety he feels must be suffocating! He needs a big, long hug and a great support system around him! Thank you for sharing this story. Seeing Jeff’s accident shocked a lot of people, but his docuseries really showed the physical damage and especially the emotional and mental damage caused by the accident. I think he’s doing an amazing thing by being so vulnerable and open to the public. I’m glad he’s putting in the work and went to the best of the best to get the proper help. I have no doubt he will do whatever you tell him to. He’s def a man of his word and has the motivation and desire to recover. He is a fighter and refuses to let anything hold him down. I really hope you continue to show his progress so people can see this isn’t a quick fix. A stunt like this can cause lifelong injuries and Jeff is lucky to have survived. But this will give hope to a lot of people who have injuries and didn’t know recovery was possible.

In this case, it would be justified cancel culture. Cancel Culture initially started as a boycott of issues that went unaddressed in big name shows and products. It became too fine tuned that it started rooting out things that were not really troubling per se (i.e one tweet from years ago), not that said tweet or statement couldn’t be without accountability. But David, literally, through his own recklessness, nearly smashed the skull and killed his friend for a video. He needs to grow up and take accountability. Jeff’s process of forgiveness or separating fro David is his own, but David has to doubly make amends with Jeff and be more responsible with his audience

I had to go through a meeting like this after three TBIs within a 15 month time frame. Developed anxiety, depression, mood swings etc. My doctor was able to make me feel stable again…in control again.
