Pretty cool idea. Haven’t read other comments, but if it were me doing this type of challenge I would reach out into the community to see if anyone needs stairs and a landing or what ever your next project is then donate it to the family that needs what your making. Then make a follow on video of you installing it at there house. It’s a win win. A person in need gets a prize and you get more content and accolades/views for your videos. 🤷🏽‍♂️

As with any trade its great to see how other craftsman tackle things differently, because of that there's always something to learn and always new ways to become better, faster, and more precise. When I was nearly finished with my carpentry apprenticeship I was in a contest at my local union hall, which included a blueprint test, a site layout test, a hands on test to build a Japanese bridge, and a concrete form for a bridge abutment. After that contest I went to the CA state contest. Similar format with different projects. It was a great experience. I was asked to teach apprentices for our local program.

Here’s a tip, when you cut the stringers, add one more rise and run and tuck it under the deck frame, that way your not putting the weight of the stairs on a little block screwed in from the back, that connection fails in about a year of use

I think for the next challenge the random picked judge should choose what they build so that the wood bully doesn't have a advantage. They should both have access to the same tooling. And not be allowed to see the other guy work, so the work can't be copied or mimicked.

The judge needs to be a 50 year old Indian soccer mom...she'll have blue tape all over it looking like it's polka-dot dotted(I've given homeowners blue tape to stick on anything they feel needs addressing before I leave the job so I don't have to walk around the house or deck with them while they talk about dumb shit) So I just give them blue tape and tell them to stick a piece where the sun don't shine. Well no...I want to say that..but yeah...whatever.

This is the first time I’ve seen your stuff. You earned a subscribe from me. I really like this and I don’t comment much on vids. I’m all in with the others saying I couldn’t do it in 4 hours. I don’t work well under time crunches. Now if I were the judge, I would have noted that both do not meet the residential code used in my area and most of the cities in the US. The one thing I saw is neither had a separate “grab rail” on the stair required by code. I built my own deck a few years ago & that is one thing the inspector got on me.

I would be down for this. I would really struggle with this specific challenge though even though I’m a 20 plus year career pro carpenter/woodworker. The reason I would struggle is not having any drawings/plans to work off of combined with the time limit. I’m currently building a very detailed range hood vent in my wood shop that is completely custom and has compound swoops with miters made from solid walnut. But I have time to plan it, draw it in fusion360, and build it in a controlled shop and no time limit (other than not milking the time). The other thing I would like to point out is I don’t think “the bully” should come up with the challenge, he should have an independent carpenter brain storm and plan the challenge. The reason being that the bully has all the time to brainstorm and game plan how he would tackle the challenge while he’s coming up with and planning the challenge himself, while the challenger is walking into it completely blind.

Look we cant see everything and angles and dont get a great picture but The judge: needs more of a "user" friendly opnion, not just a construction worker opnion.... Example: the wider stairs get more points because they are much more user friendly...walking up with grocery bags or walking next to a dog.... Steepness of stairs, bully gets the win for older folks, just a nicer design Loved the build battle ❤

4h? After 4 weeks I’m still in my cad software and no lumber in my yard yet.. Unfortunately rain for me brings bad luck. The first drizzle means I need to pack everything up and get everything into a safe spot. I WISH I had an indoor shop space or even a garage or dedicated crafting room. Unfortunately not in the cards.

As a Chippy I say you both did an outstanding job to even finish this, both have good and room to improve on design, in the real world you won't be working under these conditions so you will have a lot more time to ensure best design and better accuracy as well as correcting build issues as you go.

Very impressive speed. Both were waaaaaay faster than I could have done it. As a "Weekend Warrior" it would have taken me the whole weekend. (including 3 extra trips for materials I forgot) Plus, I tend to get very picky about the details as I'm getting closer to finishing.

Gotta get that plan finalized before heading to the yard. Draw it out if necessary but at least sit down and work through each process in your head and figure the materials from start to finish. Then give yourself a couple extra boards here and there. Be thorough and have that checklist in your head. Fasteners, anchors, adhesive, shims, paint, application materials etc.

@@jamesnm21 I agree in theory. The thing that tends to throw me off is when I'm building something I've never built before. There is (almost) always something I didn't think of or just forgot.

@@stevemamooshka3425 you'll never guess how my day went. I found out after 2 trips to the lumberyard for a new straight edge and other jig materials that the foot on my bargain brand circular saw was bent. Hard to cut a laminate countertop miter joint that's straight with a faulty tool. Sometimes it happens. Glad the day is over.

Correct me if I am wrong I am no expert in building code just the knowledge from the jobs I've done and had to look up the code for. But isn't it against code to notch a 4x4. Also against code to use blocking instead of stair stringer hangers? Love to learn and this was very entertaining to say the least
@BrokenDreamsAcuraTLS

They were both garbage. Neither build decks on a daily basis. Shouldn't take longer than an hour to build the stairs, an hour to build the frame..especially with NO parameters. Juan and my 18 year old kid with 6 month experience of deck building would shame these two. Why the internet is the devils playground. And how about you angle the bottom of your posts so it doesn't look like trash. You can't notch 4x4 posts by code anymore. Woodbullys stairs look like trash with that huge 2x10 hanging down. Neither did the stairs properly. And woodbullys rails weren't evenly spaced. This can be done by pulling 3.5 and 5 and losing or gaining an 1/8 to a 1/4 to make them come out evenly. 4 hours to do this...badly. I wouldn't hire either of them. And both would get sent home here in Wake County NC

Lets be honest here 4 hours solo, when you are just worrying about getting it finished within the given time limit is pretty good. Had you made it level plumb and square those miters etc would've been much better. Also in the real world you'd probably have couple guys working together on it, making it easier.

If I were running a job and needed an additional carpenter, I would be torn between two negatives: Brad is less of a craftsman but much easier going, while WB is clever but has an attitude that would immediately draw the fire of any other carpenter on the job. I would either look for a third applicant or go with Brad. Also, having been in the trade for many years, I think 4 hours for this project is too long.

I do like using a miter saw in tandem with a digital angle finder (Husky makes a $20 one) for when you have boards joining that aren't on the detent angles (90, 45, etc) or angles that are slightly off of the detent angles. A circ saw only has bevel angle adjustments but if you have a board that needs a bevel cut to join into another board and the angle is some odd angle like 43.5, it's a lot harder to gauge a circ saw to an angle that's not a detent angle and get it perfect. A miter saw can be adjusted to a non-detent angle just as quickly and accurately as you can a detent angle b/c that's what it was designed to do. They are really nice to have on finish carpentry where you need your cuts sealed perfectly. A circ saw is for rough framing but when you get into something with a lot of miters/bevels - especially when it's some odd angle thats where you'll really glad to have a miter saw (but you need something to gauge what that angle is - angle finder)
