I heard a metallic clatter as I was driving over some bumps today and found a section of coil under the car. I’ve checked above the wheel arches and nothing looks broken. Can I still drive my car safely? Thinking of getting it checked. Thanks for the video.

found your video very helpful! Dealer told me my car has broken front springs and quoted me $3200 and failed my inspection. I went to another inspection site and passed it without any issue.... I wanted to know if it is really easy to tell that or because the second inspector was less experience or I was almost scammed by the dealer?

Nice informative video! Following your advice, I noticed the coil springs on my car are cracked with some small surface level pieces fallen off. Do you think I should replace them?
@YouWrench
@YouWrench 2 жыл бұрын
Glad the video was helpful :-) When you say cracks, if it's just the outer coating (powder coating) cracking and coming away from the metal then that's nothing to be too concerned about as that always tends to happen over time. However, if you are saying that there are visible cracks in the spring metal itself, then yes get those replaced as those cracks won't last very long as springs are subject to high loads and quite a bit of natural abuse as part of their job. OK so found out that the bottom of my coil spring broke of but not the hole thing what should I do is it safe to drive it till I get it done?

Yes, absolutely. You probably didn't know it was broken until you took a look. It's usually one of the ends that breaks which often does not make a huge difference to steering or suspended. It will be fine to drive with a broken spring end, but don't leave it too long before replacing. It will likely affect your tire wear to a degree also, so sooner is usually better. Hope that helps !! --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! If nothing is broken and the springs look shinny smooth and pit free, is that the only thing to check for? does that mean they springs don't get fatigued or old? Mine look perfect and have 120K miles on them. As long as they are in good cosmetic condition, don't they wear out internally? that is the biggest question and the one you did not even answer or touch.

Yes, springs can 'wear out' over time. More so they start to lose their ability to effectively hold the same weight. In this case there will be a notable 'sag' in the height of the suspension. But assuming that it's not visibly sagging, and there are no break or damage to the springs then the springs should be good! Can a garage tell if front coils are broken without removing the front wheels? That’s what’s just happened to me today. I had a look under the arch at what I can see when the car is sat on my driveway, can’t see any rust or breaks at all. And from under the bonnet you can’t see anything. I’m hoping they aren’t telling lies!?

Yes, absolutely. Assuming they lifted the car into the air on either a four or two post lift, it is pretty easy to get a good view of the springs and check them for damage. With the car on the floor, not so much (depending on model and how low to the ground the car sits)! But if they drove it on to a lift and looked then definitely yes, easy to spot breaks. It may be worth jacking up the corner/s they said had the broken spring/s and remove the wheel/s and take a look for yourself so you can be 100% certain in your own mind. The breaks are likley to be on the ends of the springs and can sometimes be hard to see if visual access is not great.
