To bad you can't X ray the logs so you could cut around or avoid the metal. What about ultra sound machine to get a look inside?

Aloha Sasada-San You never forget the sound your saw makes when it hits a nail, do you? I apologize for so many questions, but I am a new sawyer and am trying to learn from the experts: Are you using carbide-tipped blades? Do you sharpen the blade in place on the saw, or do you need to remove it? I was given a beautiful Sugi Pine log once that I knew had fence staples in it; that is why the woodworker gave it to me.He was scared to saw it. So I sawed it on my resaw, feeding VERY SLOWLY with a carbide tipped blade; the blade made a noise when we hit a staple, then I slowed down the feed a lot more. We cut through five staples in that log, and the blade was only a little duller That is a gorgeous log you are cutting!

The wood you saw is beautiful. I guess resharpening the blade after hitting nails is another one of the costs of doing business. But two in one log is most unfortunate. Take care.

The sharpening is the least, it's the tensioning, rectifiing, cleaning, .. That's a pain, It can be sharp like a razor, if the tensioning is'nt correct, you can't saw 10 cm.

Darryl Dodge : I only say "knurls" because an old logger who logged 50 years in the Pacific Northwest used the term to distinguish from "burls". He had a huge collection of both: he said an actual burl is beneath the earth and grows on the root system and is encapsulated and pod~likeit is the knurl that is exposed along the tree and accessible to burl-hunters

You would think after that first nail, he would've run a metal detector over it before carrying on sawing. Beautiful bit of wood though, after all that. Also, you could turn a really nice bowl out of the Goiter that came off after the first couple of passes.

No. It will ruin "the traditional methods". And in Japan that's all that counts. Just like the absence of helmet and mask on the chainsaw guy and drawing with chalk millimeters from the blade saw. BANZAI! PS Just got a call. The guy with the chain saw was executed at dawn for using the petrol powered instrument.

@@davidglaum2538 Metal detectors pick up screws under a few inches of flesh and earrings at the bottom of the suitcase, so yes, they would be effective. But in Japan nobody would buy it if it was desecrated by modern technology.
