Yshai, I recently stumbled upon your channel while looking for Darbuka players, and I was blown away. I ended up reading your bio, and I am thoroughly impressed! The way that you honor your parents is inspiring and feels very natural (not forced.) You obviously have a huge respect for world music. I love the way that you combine authentic ethnic instruments and traditional playing with western instruments and your own virtuosity. Your music is technically excellent yet still approachable and understandable by a wide audience. I am so glad that I found someone whose music I can share with other musicians as well as with anyone I meet. Thank you so very much for your music.

this is absolutely mind blowing! I wish that all this nasty Covid was over and I could go to some drumming session and let my body explode while tuning in with that. Connecting with people on live gigs is definitely number one thing that i miss the most during this pandemia, and there is no technology that can replace the feeling when I'm dancing, singing or playing with people gathered in one room... God bless you guys, for what you're doing. I see your heart in it.

This is my new favorite song. It is really, REALLY hard to top my charts, so to speak. I get the same reaction as some people to the ASMR videos, goosebumps, my back and up into my hair prickles with delight. Please make more of these excellent songs with the heavy beats, I will perform to this song (I'm a bellydancer). I love it! Thank you!

Hi Yshai - i usually do not write that much but your enthusiasm impressed me. Respect! The only thing I miss is some "intensity" of hits on the darbuka. Some volume, hit energy variations. I know you do such variations on other instruments. On the darbuka especially a variation in power of hits makes a quite special character that is required to release its hidden soul. Looking forward to see more and more clips of yours - thanks for uploadina whatever you produce!!!
@yafterman

dear "Darbuka1" (sorry i do not know your name). thank you for your thoughtful comment. i agree with you that dynamics are probably the most important thing - but i feel we might see it on an opposite way. for me, the only thing needs to be expressed is the human - the story, emotion, spirit and soul of the person. i try to see the instruments as vessels on which i pour my inside into. so in this piece - "a line from here to nowhere" - i did my best to express the story and my spirit through the darbuka and the other instruments.. i dont see volumes as goals. we are all different with a different energy that will sound different on the same instrument. i hope i made myself clear... thank you again for your comment and insight. Blessings. Yshai

Dear Yshai - Really love your artistry on this and all your videos! I am very interested in the Quadraos drums in this video - can you tell me something about them - I have not had any luck online finding any information (where are they from etc.?) Thanks for your contribution to music and humanity. Jason
@yafterman
@yafterman 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason, thank your for your kind words. The best person to ask about the panderos quadrados is Aleix Tobias. he is a very good friend of mine and the founder of "Coetus" ensemble - of which some of them are playing in this track. In this song we use the traditional spanish version - playing with a stick. this technique was found only in several villages in spain - but is now groing since the work of Aleix and "Coetus". I'm not 100% sure about the history.. some say the square drums travelled to north africa (where they are called "Aduff") from the middle east - many years ago.. From north Africa they traveled up to Spain and portugal. But again, There are people who know much more then me about the history. There is aguy living just outside of Barcelona who makes them. Abselutly incredible drums for recordings.

Guten Tag Yshai, quite a long time ago a percussionist friend and i, studied and played your piece " A line to nowere" that we love so much. I hope you don`t mind. I am a swiss Balafon player, called by this african Instrument and by its social role in traditional societies, witch basically is: Funeral Musik, and this makes me feel a deep connection with your spiritual Artwork based on the "birth giving" Words of Susan Aftermann. Next week i ll be your student at Tamburi Mundi Festival and i`d like to ask if you would like to play with me and my pentatonic Balafon our modest attempt of an arrangement of your Artwork and maybe „another“ funeral piece from Burkina Faso.....on Thursday open night (8 minutes Time) It would be a great honour for me to encounter you in Music and discover new ways.

Yhsai, I have a musical question. Do you write down the parts you play with the other percussionists, the tutti? Or you just teach them the parts?
@yafterman
@yafterman 3 жыл бұрын
well, in this case i sent them the whole composition ready - i played all of the parts and sent them to study it and then we met for 3 days of rehearsals and recorded. but, it could also be written of course. i feel that if there is time, its always easier to send actual music to the other musicians to listen to. if there is no time and they have to read it while recording, its much less ideal, but possible. i feel also, these kind of pieces are not for reading notation in the studio... it has to have this trance/tribe group energy to it - which reading could bother...
