The three bones that make up a dinosaur's hip had a very specific arrangement that supported a powerful upright stance but allowed cartilage to wear thin with age, creating a small hole called an acetabulum where the three bones met with the femur. This morphology was key to dinosaurs' Mesozoic dominance, but not optimal for survival, so the trait is confined to Clade Dinosauria and was evolved past by modern birds in the late Cretaceous.
