Yea basically genetics and protagonist syndrome, however it is shown he is rather adept with mechanical engineering since the very first episode at least, so him applying his knowledge of runner momentum engines to a larger scale isn't completely out of left field by the end of the series. Remember he built two different runners out of trash around Satellite, his and the one Atlas took. It's also shown later on when Bruno is introduced that they work together to make a new top of the line engine design for the WRGP. I will say you don't necessarily need to go to school to educate yourself, and Yusei has always had the drive to rise above his station.

This actually can explain Utopia's second "ability" of being destroyed when targeted for an attack when it's out of overlay units; Without the other monsters to stabilize it, Utopia becomes incredibly volatile to the point that it destroys itself easily.

Utopia doesn't have this effect on the anime, and for the first ever XYZ monster, they might've wanted to clearly establish this idea: A monster, ranging from being decently powerful to possibly very strong, that a lot of decks can make, but without XYZ material it's not nearly as useful. Besides, it would be asinine from a game design perspective to make every XYZ monster without material as weak as an Utopia without overlay units. Some other XYZ like Battlin Boxer Lead Yoke become stronger with every unit lost.

A bit of weird fact is, that the Xyz-cards are black and the syncro-cards are white. Like Yusei tried to make a new energy source, that's the opposite of the syncro energy. And by creating the opposite energy, using that for the new cards, the colour scheme changed from white to (Obviously the opposite) black, the opposite colour.

I actually have my own theory on how xyz summoning works It involves using the xyz material to ‘pull’ the xyz monster into our dimension via the pull of gravity(the way the overlay units revolve around the monster always reminded me of moons orbiting a planet). This explains why the material all have to be the same level, so the gravity is balanced between them and no one materials gravity has is overtaken by another.

Some thoughts for future videos on the topic of Pendulum and Link summoning: -I believe Pendulum and Link summoning can be simply summarized as carrier mechanics since their isn't a combining of monsters to form a new monster (at least in the case of pendulums). -Pendulum summoning exhibits a simple motion in physics - that of a pendulum swinging and swaying. When it oscillates, a wave is generated with crests and troughs. In the actual game only a certain level of monsters can special summoned with corresponding scales. If I had a scale 2 Timebreaker Magician and a scale 8 Odd-Eyes Arc Pendulum Dragon then I could perform a Pendulum Summon of monsters whose levels are 3,4,5,6, and 7. In this case only the crests of the wave are taken into account and not the troughs (Monsters with a negative level don't exist yet). -I somewhat disagree with the idea of calling it a pendulum summon and would like it to be called "Arc" summoning for the simple fact that when you draw an arc you draw either a straight line or apply curvature to it. When you draw the arc in a curvature the board should end up with a variance of level 3,4,5,6,and 7 monsters. When you draw the line in a linear fashion the board should comprise of monsters of only an exclusive level. Note that the only dependency is of the monsters in the player's hands so the line might be drawn differently. However this is how I mathematically perceive the pendulum there may be other ways to describe it. -In the 5ds anime there is a structure called the Arc Cradle so I am wondering if it's related to Z-ARC or pendulums in any way. -Link summoning involves some electrical circuitry and wiring to map out where monsters ought to be on the board. -In the VRAINS anime there was something called the Yusei circuit. Could this possibly entail that Yusei developed Link summoning or was it used as a driver to support synchro summoning in the VRAINS systems? Edit: This comment underwent some changes to enhance clarification.

Maybe that's why they need their Overlay Units to use their effects. Once they consume it, the system can barely keep them stable and secure, so they are restricted in what they can do so they don't go out of control and start destroying everything. And XYZ Monsters that came down the line that can work without any XYZ Material can do it because the process was refined to perfection, and now they can work at 100% capacity without any XYZ Materials... Though not in all cases, since they are still dangerous, so that restrition is only lifted on Monsters that are safe enough to do it.

Interesting that people mentioned dark synchros as very similar to XYZ although i think its not quite the same for a reason. The dark signers/synchro cards were created through the opposite rotation of the reactor going unstable. In scientific terms that would be closer to the atomic subparticles (quarks) having the opposite spin to them, created with the wild bouncing particles during Zero Reverse mentioned in the Kaiba video, rather than actual antimatter. The idea is quite similar, but the particles dont have to be completely the exact opposite like in the XYZ theory where you pull out actual antimatter from the other side of a black hole. Dark Synchros are still matter that exists (hence they dont need overlay units to be protected from other matter), but just like in the anime it would create negative energy radiation or rather suck up energy (sucking up the souls and light in the world, "leading to a world without light" as they used to say). Antimatter on the other hand does not do that, but rather just is an equivalent opposite of matter where the "anti-atoms" themselves are still neutral in terms of energy radiation like normal atoms. The generated energy comes from controlled collisions of matter and anti-matter in that case (using an overlay unit). P.S. how the hell did i start thinking about physics from a card game video >,

Love this video! So the Astral world and the Barian/Varian world are 2 different anti-matter worlds that are smaller than the main yu-gi-oh world of matter. Cool. There is one xyz card called, "Number 95: Galaxy-Eyes Dark Matter Dragon" that seems to be an outlier to the xyz are anti-matter concept, which has bugged me for years. "Antimatter from the other side of a black hole" strikes me as being a simplification for the children who are reading the instruction manual that comes with a card game's starter deck. Antimatter doesn't play nice with regular matter, and things don't leave black holes except for the occasional emission of radiation. The strong themes of duality and synthesis in the show (most obviously, Yuma's relationship with Astral) makes antimatter's explosive, uncontrollable relationshop with normal matter a pretty bad thematic choice. Xyz monsters are probably some kind of exotic matter - likely what modern science calls 'dark matter' because we don't know enough about it - and they most likely arrived in our part of the universe via a wormhole (possibly one of the theoretical 'white holes'). We can even see something similar to this during the construction of the overlay network, with a spiral galaxy design used to convey the concept in a way that is easier for the audience to understand.

But Xyz Summoning was present before Duel Monsters. It was a form of summoning used by Astral World and the Barians first, and we see Vector and Nasch use Xyz monsters as humans far before Zexal, in Ancient Greek times

Allow me to rectify Yes, Xyz monsters were used by Barians and Astrals, AND they were used in Ancient Greece, but that was not the same thing. Yusei (according to this theory) Brought the Monsters into the World from the "Other Side" Of the Black Hole, by all possibility the Astral World, he did not create them. The guys from the past probably could use some form of magic to open the same portals on a Smaller scale (After all, Ancient Egyptians were able to do similar stuff)

I like to imagine that it is not only the Signers, Team Ragnarok and the Emperor's of Illiaster who are protected from the changes to the timeline, but that anyone with a magical artifact would be protected. So anyone with a Millenium Item or Egyptian God Card, The Seal of Orichalcos or The Legendary Dragons, anyone with a Number Card or one of the Sacred Beasts, Nightshroud's mask or some one possesed by the Light of Destruction, maybe the Ignis could somehow protect their partners, the Emperor's Key or the Wicked God Cards, the Dimensional Dragons and Ray's Nature Cards and bracelets, even the Barians and Dark Signers might be safe from the changes to the timeline.

I’m not sure about VRains being “Ritual dimension”. I’d say that the dimension thing is reserved only for extra deck summing methods. Which Ritual just isn’t. Also Link summoning itself is much more similar to xyz or fusions than to synchro or rituals. I’d even say that synchro monsters are the more successful form of rituals.

Just remembered a concept I wrote in my PC before it died... so here it is! ;) Yu-gi-oh! OC Mechanic - Shadow Monsters Shadow is a subtype of Monster card, like Gemini or Spirit. Shadow Monsters can be Set on a Spell/Trap Zone, and can later be Flip Summoned as stated in their card text (e.g. “on a Chain Link equal or higher than its Level”, “when a card is activated on the same column as this card”) or by another card effect. (e.g. Bait Doll, if legal) Shadow Pendulum Monsters can be Activated onto a Pendulum Zone as indicated in their Pendulum Effect text (e.g. “on a Chain Link equal or higher than its Scale”, “when a card in your Pendulum Zone leaves the field”) Instead of Flip Summoning it.

Okay so I have a question and a partial answer for that question. How could Yusei create XYZ Summoning if XYZ summoning was shown in Zexal to exist in ancient times? The answer I have for this is, when developing XYZ summoning they accidentally sent some cards back in time when messing with the Infinity Device technology. Not a complete answer but an answer none the less.
