@@zi420s Studying in the US is a privilege. There will be no issues if you have honest intentions and follow the law. Using a student visa to stay illegal or work in the USA will hurt other students in your country. These types of behavior will lessen the number of international students in our university. Some senators in our government want to cap international students and have our elite university do away with accepting international students to give high acceptance to American students. With all the internationals abusing student visas in overstating and what is happening in Canada, it will be more challenging for Indian students to study in the US.

@John Smith There is nothing odd in providing SSN to International Students. They won't be able to get paid otherwise. It's the student's responsibility to go by the rules laid out by the University / USCIS/ US gov. We should not fall into such traps which allow us to make money off campus without the consent of the University and if the hiring person off campus is just checking the SSN to recruit the student then it's not his fault. Rather the student needs to be careful in all such situations.

Thanks for sharing. This is really an important topic.... When i was doing my MS i couldn't get an summer internship and instead work with a professor in his lab rather than working off campus. The Indian student association strictly warned us against work off campus so that was a big No No for me. Now I have moved to a different place for a full time job and I see all the Indian students of the nearby university here are working on Motels and gas station stores...like literally every single one of em. I was so shocked that there are so many students breaking the law without thinking about the consequences and the funny part is many of them mocked me coz I never dared to do so.

It's clearly written on your addmission letter and other documents while receiving it from university or college that for the 1st academic year you can't do off campus job. Prioritise your academic 1st then go for part time job. And there are plenty of jobs on on-campus. Some people take this matter lightly because thinks that it's just a minor crime. They don't even consider it crime but just a mistake. It's just for a year and you can do the job outside the college after your 1st year. Just for buying iphone, lavish things prioritising your physical needs than your career is stupidity. If by chance you didn't know about university rules or regulations it is considerable and you can get out of situation after a disciplinary hearing and some fine. But committing it knowing the fact it's unfair will lead you to such consequences. Beware students. I

I hope the immigration department amends the laws which will be more helpful towards the international students, considering the number is increasing exponentially.

A guy came from Indian claiming the job he came for was no longer available and instead registered in a vocational school. I introduced him to Indian people so he could get some help and he studied and worked but no one reported him. I advised him to keep things private that the less people who knew, the better he was. So don’t share what you are doing outside campus. Or find someone who can give you free room and meals and work free for them so no money exchanges hands. But I totally agree with Yuri, be patient because you will get a job which will pay 3x more than $10an hr once you finish education. We see a lot of students come to Sikh temples to eat on sundays and usually when I helped I used to fill food containers for them so they had food for an extra day or two.

You know what if a student is confused about the jobs off campus or on campus the best thing is that meet your college department make a relationship with atleastt one teacher so he or she can guide you and in one month you have to look and you have to ask each and every day from the college faculty that I want a on campus job And plus from starting only contact and make a good relationship with an immigration attorney so that you have a full clear idea to what to do or not and what i feel is that if you ask consistently about a part time on campus job to the faculty Then you will get the job evidently.....

For $6k that was totally not worth. I have lived in US for close to 25 year and I can can assure you that you will end up making way way more money over the span for your career. I hope this person has learnt a lesson from this. God bless!!

of course he was wrong for doing such a thing and he was also wrong by saying that he works off campus in front of his international students friends because you should never trust anybody, we hope he learned the lesson and move on for a better future.

Just to be clear. Can't you work outside campus at all? Or is there a permissible limit?
