I still kinda think to this day that the rod also has a spirit inside it, which is yami marik. To just have his tranformation ruled out as "marik's inner hate" makes me mad, because there's yami yugi who is a spirit inside a millennium item. Yami bakura who is also a spirit inside a millennium item. So why not just have yami marik also be a spirit inside a millennium item? Or at least have it mentioned in the anime or manga that yami marik is a result of the millennium rod..

Yami Marik's odd physical traits explain so much about his being or rather his lack of being. His face stretches out not just to emphasize his insanity, but to demonstrate how his existence is that fragile, he unconsciously failing to keep himself solid and his appearance warps out of him. He also grows more veins on his face as time goes on because he's implied to be physically degrading. His mentality worsens as well, going from calm yet unrepentantly sadistic to savagely psychotic. Neither Yami Bakura or Yami Yugi/Atem have this, implying that Yami Marik was an entity that wasn't meant to exist and he's breaking down as time goes on.

It's kinda like Voldemort in Harry Potter, who is incapable of love/empathy because he was conceived by a Love Potion. It makes for a bit better a use of cartoonistic levels of supervillainy when you take the idea of someone being a manifestation of evil. This tends to make these kinds of villains awful at plotting though, usually due to their sadistic nature and desire to toy with their enemies.

Chris Delleya Same here. The only villain I like almost as much as Marik would be Pegasus, who is hilarious and badass in his own way. Plus, Pegasus has one of the coolest decks in the series imo. The combination of his Toon monsters contrasted by his darker and more serious, and maybe evil, cards like Relinquished, Thousand Eyes Idol, Thousand Eyes Restrict etc is simply awesome. Even without his mind reading powers, his deck would be quite a formidable challenge for any Duelist to best, even the likes of Yami (who narrowly defeated him) and Kaiba (who lost, but only because of the mind reading bullshit; had it been a legit, no cheating duel, I definitely believe Kaiba would've came out on top, albeit still after a tough duel).

Marik had good reasons for his actions, he was about to win against Atem too but regular marik took control and gave up. He basically won each duel. To be completely honest, I was really surprised when I found out that Marik was only 16 years old. The way he acted right up till the end of Battle City, I honestly thought he was a lot older. I guess wanting to see the outside world but being forced against your will to live underground, protecting a stuffy tomb of a pharaoh from thousands of years ago who, for all anyone knew, would never return, then having ancient writing permanently etched into your skin as an adolescent would make anyone go off the deep end, regardless of their age lol. All joking aside, despite Marik being a cruel sadistic psychopath, I do sort of feel bad for him; I mean his backstory was pretty dark. That doesn't excuse the terrible things he did, but it does serve to explain his actions throughout the course of the Battle City Tournament. At least he seemed to turn things around, and the next time we encountered Marik after Battle City, he seemed to be a pretty decent guy. That having been said, I'd think he'd need to undergo therapy at some point in his life. Regardless of the final outcome, dealing with all that pain, plus fully coming to terms with all the horrible things he did can't be an easy task, and would probably take years to work through. Even so, I could imagine him being emotionally/psychologically scarred for life to some degree.

Can we talk about how incredibly bad of a take the ethics of Mariks story arc is? I mean he's essentially held captive by his family and their dedication to the pharaoh. In his disobedience of seeing the actual light of day once in his entire life his father beats and disowns Odion who is clearly a servant of the family, and not an accepted family member as the show struggles to claim. He then lashes out at his captor and escapes and this is how he became the evil force the story line forces him to be. And in his redemption arc he pleads for his captors forgiveness and returns to his former servitude? Yet his sister gets to choose her own destiny in the end and relinguish the burden of her task.

Honestly, I dislike the idea behind Dark Marik, I love the character and the concept. I dislike the idea mainly because it takes away the responsibility of normal Marik and his actions as well as diminishes his motivations which were somewhat justified. Think about it, Marik was destined to be a tomb keep and live in darkness for the rest of his life, hoping that the Pharaoh might return. Think about how many generations prior have died, wasting their lives hoping that this thousand year old ghost will come back for his memories. His father was abusive as shown in the anime, Marik had every reason to be evil, having a dark alternate version to excuse him is kind of insulting to the character. It would have been so much better if instead of Marik giving up at the end, he should have continued dueling Yami Yugi, saying that "this doesn't change anything" It would have been much better for the character. Or maybe if Yami apologized to Marik and his family for dedicating their lives to guarding his tomb, it would have been a much better ending to his character arc.

Marik didn't have to kill his father. Hr could have just left the Tomb and ignored his father. The reality is Marik created a dark half because of the guilt he felt for killing his father. It was appropriate for Marik to feel guilty. However he should have forgiven himself because Odion and Ishizu already forgave him. Also it's implied Marik's father was abusive due to his wife dying after giving birth to Marik. If Marik didn't become a Tomb Keeper then in his father's mind his beloved wife's death is meaningless. Also Atem has no reason to feel guilty. Marik and his family chose to honor the ancient tradition Atem didn't make them do it. Marik used Atem as an excuse for his own act of murder. Which he correctly recognized was wrong at the end of the Battle City Tournament.

One of Marik's ancestor's thousands of years ago took on the responsibility and forced his descendant to take it on. Atem while he never forced Marik's ancestor's to take on the responsibility (as far as we know, it was never explained) but Marik suffered greatly indirectly due to Atem. Marik's dark half was not created because of guilt, he was created because of his abusive father, and the reason he killed his father was because he was whipping Odion, and caused his dark half to be revealed. Also, my criticism isn't that he was right for trying to kill people or take over the world, it was that his motivations were justified and that they shouldn't have used his dark half as a scapegoat. Marik's character arc ended with him accepting his fate as a tombkeeper and not being mad at Atem, when he absolutely had a right to be angry. Again, Atem probably didn't know a family was living underground keeping his tomb safe for thousands of years (or maybe he did, never explained), but that doesn't change anything, doesn't change Marik's abuse, doesn't change that an entire family has wasted generations guarding a dead man's tomb.

@@Sai4651 I always thought that Yami Marik was created after Marik was forced to have those inscriptions carved into his back, due to the pain and the anger at being forced to protect the Pharaoh's tomb despite not wanting to, in the conversation with Odion following this harrowing experience; a ghostly image of Yami Marik's face stretches out of Marik's face it was Odion getting whipped/beaten depending on the version that caused Yami Marik to take control of Marik for the first time, before Odion was able to keep Yami Marik at bay

@@Sai4651 Marik's dark-half wasn't a scrap-goat because the fact is he created him to begin with and it was Marik's own will that decided to created the Rare Hunters and treated his own men badly. It was also Marik who had Yugi and Joey have a death match when one of both of them would die when Joey and the others had nothing to do with his grudge against Atem. As for Atem himself, he had nothing to do with what happened to Marik or his family because he was dead by the time the Tomb-Keepers were created since they were made by Seto after he became Pharaoh along with the Tablet of Memories. It also wasn't 'wasted' because without the Tomb-Keepers, Atem would have never gotten his memories back which allowed him to beat Zorc and finally be put to rest. What happened to Marik was horrible, but it happened because of internal rot within the Tomb-Keepers. Which is pretty true to are real history.

Probably one of the most psychologically interesting characters what with having dissociative identity disorder, even if it is a media representation. I remember when one of my college psychology course professors said: "Now, you may think this looks like the sexiest disorder in the world (Me: thinks of Marik Ishtar). But let me tell you that it really isn't." My favorite 1st generation Yugioh character.
