Its a perfectly legal move. All units must retreat to the SAME friendly territory.

These examples of Ping Ponging are a very clear demonstration. Thank you for that ( I was unaware of the confusion in your last video example ). Jon

It's ILLEGAL?🤯

Not to add controversey here, but in my opinion and by my reading of the rule, why would you have to have a surviving unit from said territory to retreat your other units to said territory? The rules dont say anything about surviving units in relation to options of retreat. It only says they must all retreat to the same friendly territory.

Exactly. Only one of the attacking units must have come from a certain territory. It does not male a difference if it survived the battle. It is clear in the rule book.

Of course it is legal! But on the forum there is enough discussion about things that are just in the rulebook. One thing i did not understand though: you said it becomes illegal if the one unit that came from a specific territory dies, you can not retreat there. I can not find that in the book. I read it as: you can retreat to any territory from which an attacking unit came from. (Regardless it’s dead now!)

They can only retreat to where at least one of them (retreating) originated.

Nice video, I never knew so many viewers had a problem with it... In my opinion, a 5 second video of you shouting “READ THE RULE BOOK” would have been more effective.

Ironically your clarification video made me question what I thought was a simple, original move. I have never thought one of the units from the territory had to be involved in the retreat. I took it to be simply, attacking overland units can all retreat to one of the territories that attacking overland units came from. Never thought of it in terms of surviving, attacking overland units. I think the rules would specify if that were the case. It is unusual to segregate your units when attacking. They usually all just go on the board. However during an amphibious assault, only any overland units involved may retreat, and the rules express this. It expresses that the troops need to be segregated and fall under different conditions. I think if this rule meant what you take it to mean, the rule book would add those extra instruction and specifications, like it does for amphibious assaults. Thoughts?

For us we play as it states. May only retreat to a territory where a remaining unit came from. The rules don't state may retreat to a territory where an attacking unit came from, but where an remaining unit came from. Weve never used battlebaords, so there is never any confusion who came from where. We feel its a waste of time to grab all the pieces for each battle, place on the board, then replace after....

@@siredblood Check out page 20 of the Europe Second Edition rules. The picture example of the destroyer retreat shows retreat to any space that was attacked from is an option. Nothing in the wording about surviving units origination.
@siredblood5 жыл бұрын
If you read right above that, it’s related to naval units. Refer to page 18 where it’s referring to land units.
@siredblood5 жыл бұрын
But your right in the case of naval units, no one owns a SZ, just can’t be hostile.

I don't see anything about retreating on page 18. Page 20, General Combat, Step 6. Press attack or retreat. Condition B--Attacker Retreats "The attacker (never the defender) can retreat during this step. Move all attacking land and sea units in that combat that are on the battle strip to a single adjacent friendly space from or through which at least 1 of the ORIGINAL(my emphasis, but actual wording) attacking land or sea units moved. In the case of sea units, that space must have been friendly at the start of the turn. All such units must retreat together to the same territory or sea zone, regardless of where they came from. Retreating air units remain in the contested space temporarily. They complete their retreat movement during the Noncombat Move phase using the same rules as an air unit involved in a successful battle. Retreat Example: After one round of attacks, the attacking player decides to retreat, but his destroyer must retreat to one of the sea zones that the attacking forces came from." Interestingly, I found this wording in my hard copies of both Europe and Pacific Second Edition rules, but not in the downloadable second edition rules. I wonder what that means....? I'll pose the question on the rules forum.

Mainly because people don't take the f'n time to read rulebooks properly! It's a rampant epidemic in gaming that seems universal! From Warhammer 40K, D&D, Pathfinder to Payday and Clue. Axis and Allies is for sure no exception!
