I believe it was recorded with the microphone misplaced somewhere far in the left side of the piano. Look at 1:33 and they "literally" put a microphone inside the piano... No wonder why it sounds this terrible...

Unfortunately the recording is killing the interpretation. Honestly, I have to say, that while I love Yuja, it completely doesn't sound like her... but I hope it's due to the recording :/

I am a huge fan of Yuja. Her music is like true magic for me and I never get tired of listening to her. This time, however, I felt something was missing. Her technical command of the piano was amazing, but all I could hear was an endless blending of notes. I wish she had emphasized the right hand a little more. (The left hand is so powerful and the right hand completely vanishes). I wish the middle part had been more romantic, maybe some more slowing down would have helped. Yuja is a world class pianist, and she can certainly give a mind blowing performance of this piece. I hope she will post another recording of it sometime in the future.

I think a lot of that might be the recording. You can see (0:26) they just took a regular hand mic and stuck it by the bass strings.

I agree with you. This is not a piece to lavish virtuosity, but an intense lyricism, muffled here by the heavy left hand and the frenetic rhythm all the time.

Very Rachmanoniffish. Thoroughly enjoyed it despite the imbalance / misplacement of the speakers. The purity of the notes was really incredible - no slurs or fuzzy passages hidden with pedal. Technically, one if the best performance of this piece I have ever heard in its fire, clarity and bravura.

One of the most dramatic and fantastic recording of Wang. Her best for me. She played like a Goddess in these times. This was her pianism ten years ago. A tremendous tension, unpleasant and definitive, brutal and incredibly beautiful. Into the constellation of Sofronitzky, Hofmann and Horowitz. What could be better ? Nothing.

Over the last 45 years I have Horowitz in concert, Weisenberg, Pollini, Pogoreilch etc..all incredible. 2 years ago Yuja Wang. I thought the hammers were going to come apart in the Chopin sonata. Stunning. Scriabin was perfect and finally on the 7th of 8 encores she broke into a Scott Joplin Rag to calm people down but it was a virtuoso rendition for her. My point is that Ms. Wang blows all the others away by miles. Don't believe me? Go hear her live!

i'm not an anti-fan because I really like her as a person but I cannot bear the way she plays most pieces in fact I really haven't heard anything yet that I liked it I don't know that it seems I saw a recording of her studying Schubert with her teacher I think it's Leanne Fleischer and he's struggling to get her to feel the Schubert and she laughs at him as if he's naïve and she just says to him I can't play this she doesn't say those words she wouldn't say that but she loves him as if he's naïve because he wants her to bring out phrasing and feeling well that's how I feel and this is a great example of that she doesn't even seem to hear the melody that's in the right hand of it and that Melody in the right hand is so gorgeous listen to ivo p's recording from Croatia for example

You can't tell -- the recording is really that bad. Of course, you can tell the tempo. But the dynamics and bass-treble balance are obliterated by the recording.
