Ace Combat the anime to me would be Area 88, just without the respawning missiles. That's where the canyon runs come from. It was originally called the "Tight Rope", the very same concept of flying low altitude in narrow places to avoid radar detection. While i can't really compare Yukikaze, because the adversaries are aliens.

The JAM never fought the FAF head-on with swarm tactics, before. It's mostly just probing attacks, infiltrations and skirmishes for the past 33 years, so it's no surprise that the FAF were not prepared to fight the JAM in swarms. The worst the JAM have done throughout the entire war are tactical nuclear strikes, but the FAF had nukes as well so it's rather mutual. Besides, it turned out that this "war" is nothing but a curious experiment, as far as the JAM are concerned.
