I've watched some others set theres up and they screw around so much. Just watching them i thought of this very setup. You could use 2 poles to the bank but still do it one man. Let the river do the work. Awesome work Stan.

I hope they can bring back the show we really enjoyed watching it. for us living in the uk and we live in the city it was an eye opener watching those very special people live there lives the way they do.to us it’s a bit scary because we don’t get the bad weather like they do in Alaska. Anyway good luck to the people of tanana i think they need a bit of luck.

How many fish can you catch in a year? Do you have to have a special license?
@stanzuray
@stanzuray 6 жыл бұрын
I use to run a video monitoring fishwheel for many years which counted fish caught in padded baskets and released immediately. It ran 24 hours a day for almost 4 months and recorded numbers like 30,000 of all species. Any net or fishwheel in the right spot can do that. What people really catch for their use is as low as 50 for the season or as high as 2-3000 for a big family and say a dog team. No license is needed unless you use a fishing rod and do it for sport.

how old is the fish wheel? is there any year to year maintenance with it?
@stanzuray
@stanzuray 9 жыл бұрын
Lawrence oliver Wheel is 8 years old and still sound and does need maintenance but depending on how it's built it can make an incredibly difference. Some are only made to get 3 years or so out of but they are made fast. One like this one took me all summer to build but has never broke a nail or joint ever.

Outstanding video! That was SUPER clear video, what kind of camera are you using?
@stanzuray
@stanzuray 9 жыл бұрын
Bill Miller Nikon AW 100 waterproof. Use the video part which seems better than my HD camcorder which is made for video. Also I carry a camera each day in summer for years now and even when working hard and dirty. Use to go through one each year until I got this one cause the zoom lens part doesn't get all silted up and sticky and busted - it's tough. One of the camera guys on the Yukon Men show had one and said it was a solid quality camera. I need one that is always on my belt - small and simple and tough. Always buy waterproof not cause of water but because they keep out dirt which kills cameras.

I never will understand why the box that catches the fish is above the waterline. A box build with a heavy duty wire mash, set underneath the water would keep the fish alive and fresh. Plus you could release what ever got cought unintentional. All overall it would be more humanly though a little more complicated to build, but worth it I think...
@stanzuray
@stanzuray 6 жыл бұрын
Many people don't use just one species so use all the catch and don't need to let anything go. Live boxes such as I use on my wheel are a big hassle next to an open box on the raft. They keep fish fresher as you say and that is why I use them. Most people don't have them and just have to check their wheel a lot.
@danielwurmer2266
@danielwurmer2266 6 жыл бұрын
Stan Zuray so your box keeps them alive? Is it just filled with water? Down the river I just saw hundreds, if not thousands of dead fish on the shore, fish that got caught by wheels and just got thrown back in the river because they weren't the wanted species. Sad to watch. At least the eagles and bears took care of some of them... anyways, I thought a box that keeps them alive would solve it.

Hey stan, why don't you cast net salmon? I watch the show and no one uses a cast net only gill nets.
@stanzuray
@stanzuray 6 жыл бұрын
Set nets and fish wheels catch fish while you are back at camp working and cutting fish. A cast net is only fishing while you are fishing it and have taken time out from work to fish it. I think that is the biggest reason.

Heith Gagnon Only 6 wheels so far but they were all long lasting ones. We get all sorts of whitefish and sheefish also. Basically anything that migrates up the Yukon. Happens every now and then. Logs pile up and stress cables that break during high water times. Wind has broken them apart and whole baskets disappeared downriver. I lost one but found it 10 miles downriver stuck by the shore when a poor tie up broke. Not fun stuff.

Stan... how does discovery Channel treat you? Are the film crew nice people? Are they wimps or a tough guy like your self?
@stanzuray
@stanzuray 8 жыл бұрын
We do not have much contact with Discovery Channel people. The show is filmed by a smaller production company from NY and after all these years the regular film guys and head of the company are like family. They are very good to us and understanding of our lifestyle. Many of the camera men are nothing short of what I call world class outdoorsmen. One example that is easy to use is the guy that traveled with me for the first couple of years - he had been to the top of Mt Everest twice and done it since I last worked with him also. Been a good experience.
