I should use the ParClo more often in my cities, mostly I use a simple Diamond Interchange and upgrade it to a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) if I need more traffic flow. But it gets too repetitive. Yumbl, in your traffic light setup, I think some of the lights that are continuously green will never allow pedestrians to cross because the pedestrian light will be continuously red.

I came up with a variation on the B4 ParClo using the displaced left turn road you used in one of your CFI builds that puts all conflict in a single intersection with a 2-phase light in the middle of the arterial bridge, allowing for through traffic to be only briefly interrupted for the left turn crossing. I was feeling very proud of myself until I realized that what I'd invented was functionally equivalent to your Single Point ParClo (the left-from-arterial and right-from-freeway lanes are just adjacent to the artierial through lanes, instead of on a separate bridge). It does however show that you can convert a standard-issue B4 into a single point ParClo with no changes to the road alignment: in C:S just using upgrade road and TM:PE (and optionally IMT); in the real world potentially just restriping and ripping out/installing new signals (though adding a barrier for the contraflow lane would be smart). Unfortunately I haven't been able to get the light to work properly. I can set it up so each side goes in turn, of course. But what I want to do is have a through traffic phase for both directions and a crossover phase for both directions, and I can't figure it out. I tried cheesing TM:PE by setting a vehicle restriction on the (innermost) "left turn" lane approaching the light, which does seem to give it a separate signal under Change Mode, but it doesn't seem to work. Everything ends up going on the phase where the through lanes are green, and stopping on the phase when the restricted lane is supposed to be green.

Did you find all the measures about textures (i.e @ 4:00) you talk about the texture being nicer when you do one unit less. Was it through trial and error ? I feel like there should be a guide about this. If no guides, I wonder if there could be a mod to just show it up instead of the blue previews we get. Also, you deserve way more attention. Your videos are so complete and I love how you explain why you do everything. Would love to see a city building (Biffa style) serie with your thought process of intersections and your traffic solving abilities.
@Pystro2 жыл бұрын
That one unit less is so that the ramp and the main highway do not end in that node at exactly the same angle. It saves you the Move-It wiggle that Yumbl shows at 4:04. 1 unit in that case is mostly arbitrary (unless Yumbl has a reason for it that eludes me). Half a unit or 2 units would probably look similarly well.
@YUMBL2 жыл бұрын
Just trial and error. It has a few advantages. One being the texture doesnt overlap, but it also makes for a gentler entrance onto the ramp.

There's a parclo in the town I currently reside in but it's actually a broken parclo because there is a business that owns the property right up to the highway and the overpassing road. Because of this the right turn only lane doesn't exist and is converted into a right and left turn on the loop on the other side. Not to mention it is a stop sign with a blind hill looking over the bridge for left turn. When the traffic is high it breaks down quickly and ends up on the highway and overfills the exit lane and cars end up in the curb lane on the side of the highway, it's really a mess. Yay, U.S. traffic departments...
@Marconius62 жыл бұрын
Just as a note to other players: you don't HAVE to make this interchange this big, all the sliplanes and clover leaves are only necessary because highway speeds are quite high. If you have smaller, slower roads, you can build the same topography in a much more compact form that basically ends up being just a ring with a + inside of it.

This is the opposite of my favorite parclo. I want the cloverleaf ramps to flow from the arterial street to the highway, eliminating the need to store the cars waiting to make left turns. Having the traffic exit the highway, to a long ramp, split into right and left turns, then further divide left turns into two lanes to double throughput during the traffic light cycle, provides that storage.

I like more modified versions of ParClo, where it kinda meets CFI. I took 4+2 road from vanilla plus and disabled & reversed one lane each to make F2:R2:F1 so the left turn conflict point is moved to one side of the ParClo (both lefts cross at the same node, like SPUI, except it's dislocated to one of the sides. I did not decorate it much, but that single road, gave me a lot of very interesting non-standard crossings. I like imperfect designs that make it look like engineers had to work around an issue like a historical building or stadium etc.

if trying to replicate: 21:00 It's very important to align the phases, when you do shared timings for two crossings. 12:10 This asymmetric road suggested here would provide separate lanes for traffic via the dark green and pale orange lane connectors. You can either merge those lanes before they actually go into the highway. Or you can continue the two lanes and merge them into the highway which would replace the 6:19 "that two lane goes back up to three lane" by a 2+2=4 lane math - mirroring the four lanes you started with at 5:50 ... I actually prefer that symmetry. Would symmetry be a strong argument in reality where extra lanes cost extra money? Definetly no, but if the above 12:10 mentioned dark green and pale orange turns have heavy traffic this solution could benefit traffic flow. Otherwise this is rather an aesthetic choice.

Hey Yumbl. You have an earlier version of the Parclo that does the curves slightly differently. There's basically a parallel ramp next to the highway that loops around on the far side of the overpass. Is there any difference between that layout and this one as far as handling traffic flow? I guess the other one would have a longer length between the exit and on ramps. Hopefully you know what I'm referring to.

So, I'm not sure if anyone has pointed out to you... but when you're setting up these traffic lights, you're saying 'X never has to stop' but that's not true. You're neglecting your pedestrian traffic, by failing to set up steps that include crossing for them, even though you've stated that you're keeping crossings across the spots going across the highway traffic entering/exiting but not allowing them to cross the parkway. So the cross and sidwalks exist... the just can't be used.

@@YUMBL First rule of thumb: lane addition comes before lane subtraction. Never take away a lane without having first added one. Second rule of thumb: never molest your through lane. The outer most lane is your through lane. It is sacred. Lanes to the inside are passing lanes, added lanes to the outside for exiting/merging traffic. When you do lane math like you and Biffa do (he's just as guilty and started this whole lane math mess) you force two unnecessary lane changes (one on each side of the intersection) for through traffic when you subtract a lane before adding it. The outer most travel lane is forced to exit so any though traffic now needs to shift one inside. Then on the opposite side there is now a travel lane to the right which should disappear as a merge lane. To be "realistic" which is what you're striving for, the through lane(s) in all directions should never be interrupted. You can adds lanes left and right, but never force a through lane into becoming an exit lane. There are exemptions of course (three way service interchanges; left hand exits - which suck; etc) but those first two rules will usually solve 99% of your lane math problems and also keep traffic flowing a lot better without needing to force lane restrictions with Traffic Manager. What's frustrating is the default highway lanes on CS is 3 which is honestly overkill. Usually when I prep a map I downgrade all the starting highways to two lanes and upgrade only when and where needed. Makes keeping track of lane math easier and makes all the highways more realistic when it's 2+1-1 rather than 3-1+1. As someone who travels 20,000-30,000 miles a year across the country on our highways and byways it's a pet peeve of mine. No hate or shade your way. Love your videos. Just between you and Biffa the whole "lane math" thing drives me nuts because no one gets it right.

Side note: In the real world lane math with "truck climbing lanes" drives me up a wall. I hate it when they add a slow truck lane to the right then take it away at the top of the mountain. Always better to add an extra passing lane to the left which keeps the through traffic lane intact and doesn't force unnecessary lane changes for slow moving traffic.

Who’s to say this isn’t access to a 4 lane (2 lanes in each direction) highway?

Also, I added a lane on the right before the interchange so I’m not sure what you’re talking about.
