First time I managed to whistle, I was 5 years old, lying in bed after bed time. I was so happy that I managed to do it that I tried furiously to replicate it, and I remember it took me several days after that to be able to do it on demand. Still to this day I've only barely scratched the surface of what whistleing can do, and I love it.

Hello Yuki. Best tutorial on how to pucker whistle I've run into, and I've looked everywhere. I like especially the "Pew Pew" method, closely followed by the "He You" method. I'm a scientist researching the physics of whistling, so maybe I can contribute a little towards understanding how this works. The last good published research on the topic was fifty years ago, and this is what they found: the mouth becomes a sort of ocarina, where you change pitch by changing the space with you tongue. You need to have two narrow points, one is the lips, and the other is the back the tongue and palate. This is necessary so an "ocarina" space can be made for the sound to run back and forth like a wave on a string. I believe that people who can't whistle have trouble forming either narrow point correctly (or both). The narrowing at the lips is especially hard because this is where the flow instability causing the sound resides. But is is also possible to get the lip shape right and not produce a sound because you didn't form the narrowing at the back of your mouth correctly. I think those two methods work because they get the back of your tongue in the right position, so you only need to worry about shaping your lips. Keep up the good work!
@YukiTakeda3 жыл бұрын
Hi Francisco, thank you so much for your detailed comment! In this video I didn’t really get to the details about the source and the sink of the whistle chamber, but you make a good point about the need to focus on the two narrowing points - especially when you are trying to expand your range and when you are learning the “register switch warbling” and polyphonic whistling. If you have time, please take a look at two videos I suggest: (1) Theory of Whistling (by Kindred Harvest) Kindred is my friend who really explained to me how all the whistling physics work, and this video is by far the most comprehensive (though he told me he later found mistakes in the videos) (2) Warbling Masterclass (International Whistlers Guild) I gave a talk on warbling for experienced whistlers with a bit more scientific and musical details, and also explained how polyphonic whistling works. Warbling, register switching and polyphonic whistling (especially when it comes to inward whistling) are topics that must be studied by physicists like you. Finding a clear explana about these techniques should advance the understanding of whistling physics by a lot. Thank you again and hope to talk to you in more detail in the future!!

I just love it. I can whistle in about three different ways and I can also do high tones. Most of the time, I am doing unconsciously. I don't realise it until my mom complains that it's annoying. I don't know why I watched a tutorial on how to whistle but somehow I stumbled over it... However, have a nice day! Greetings from Switzerland.

Could you maybe make a video on how to whistle lower notes? I finally produced a whistle about a month ago after two days of constant effort. A month later and I can whistle tons of fun tunes like the X files theme. It’s lots of fun but my only issue is the lower notes, I really struggle with those and feel like it’s just a physical limitation that cannot be overcome. I see lots of videos on how to whistle higher notes, but not many on how to whistle the lower ones.
@YukiTakeda3 жыл бұрын
Well congrats first on being able to whistle like that! Right, I ought to make a video on that. Key is to understand that lower notes are produced further at the back of your mouth, like half way between your lips and your throat. Try whispering words like “hole” or “foam” loudly.
@ItsShatter3 жыл бұрын

@YukiTakeda3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kala! The gap in your teeth shouldn’t affect your pucker (normal, lip) whistling. If you sound like a kettle, that’s probably a different whistle. Try using a drinking straw to take a sip of water from a glass normally, and keep that mouth shape and remove the straw (you can swallow the water of course). Blow air out naturally with that mouthshape, and bring the direction of the air slowly downwards by pushing your top lip slightly forward (anatomically speaking you’re drawing your jaw back, but it feels more like you’re pushing your upper lip out). let me know how it goes!
