Yurlok of Scorch Thrash | Groupslug - The Brewery [S05E04]

Greetings, everyone! Welcome to The Commander Tavern! I am Demented Kirby and this is the 4th episode of the 5th season of one of the series on this channel, The Brewery. This series is all about brewing and deck techs - hopefully showcasing the spiciest of brews!
This episode of The Brewery is my take on Yurlok of Scorch Thrash. A groupslug deck through and through to the point where it even turns grouphug cards like mana incrementation into pain. I'm glad you saw the playline with City of Solitude! What do you think about Desolation in this deck?

Yeah, City of Solitude is a must if we want to enforce mana burn! I considered Desolation but once I trimmed down the ramp spells for rocks instead, I'm not going to have as many lands out as when I first tested the deck. I would have to sacrifice a land eventually and drop a land. Granted, I have Yurlok and other mana dorks as well as rocks and enchantments to give me mana. But I felt like it was too risky. That being said, it's not a bad card and can definitely go in a deck that's way more careless than this one.

I'd love a Jund -1/-1 counter commander so that the snake lady (name escapes me at 4am) and the Scorpion god can be in a deck together! And throw Vilis and Yawgmoth in for good measure.

@@jemm113 Same! I was going to build a -1/-1 counters matters deck with Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons but wished she was BRG instead because of how many black/red cards have amazing synergy with -1/-1 counters. Hopefully we get a BRG commander for that soon!

another combo that i think you may have missed is yurlok + umbral mantle + leyline of abundance. the leyline lets yurlok make one extra mana to have a combo where you are left with netting zero mana yourself, while your opponents get infinite mana. plus you get the upside of it being a leyline for the pre-game effect and a mana sink too.

That's definitely a great suggestion! It has the potential of ending the game right then and there while also protecting yourself from losing.

@Alex Wibert I haven't updated the list since the video has been released since I'm constantly working on new decks and content. But if you want an idea of two cards to cut, I can base it on the current deck list that's in the link. So you can just take out Battle at the Bridge for the leyline since Umbral Mantle is already in the list.

How did the Vineyard Effects play out for you so far? Im not sure if i should include them - they are basically a free Sol Ring, a super busted mana Rock everyone uses, despite it only generating colorless mana. I feel like every player has a way to use the green for generic costs.

You can definitely exclude them, especially since better cards for the deck have come out since the making of this video.

Hey Kirby!! i noticed that you said Blood Moon/Magus of the Moon + Burning Earth was a no-bo. Not entirely true. Though Magus and Blood Moon turn non-basic lands into mountains, they are still non-basic mountains. So if they do tap them for mana, they would still take damage from Burning Earth.

I dont think giving opponents Mana with magus etc is worth it. they can just use it for generic costs. how did it play out for you? i wanna rebuild belbe into him, playing big mana/x spells and going for big mana for my oponnents with tap down

You can definitely turn Belbe into a "red Belbe" thanks to Yurlok. There're more painful cards in red so you're definitely powering it up.

Fiery emancipation unfortunately will not work. FE works off of damage not life loss. Yurlok deals life loss.

I know it doesn’t work; none of the damage multipliers or incrementors work with Yurlok; I even mention it. Those effects work with the enchantments that deal damage as well as any other way I give damage (combat, etc.)

It’s not damage it’s loss of life so those don’t work.

Which of “these” are you referring to? There’s a lot of cards in the deck that specify ‘damage’. Damage doubling and incrementing effects still apply to those damage dealing effects, even if they don’t affect Yurlok. Effects that specify ‘life loss’ are the ones that affect Yurlok.
