'How Can I Tell You' performed live in 1971.
LYRICS:
How can I tell you
That I love you
I love you
But I can't think of right words to say
I long to tell you
That I'm always thinking of you
I'm always thinking of you
But my words just blow away
Just blow away
It always ends up to one thing, honey
And I can't think of right words to say
Wherever I am girl
I'm always walking with you
I'm always walking with you
But I look and you're not there
Whoever I'm with
I'm always, always talking to you
I'm always talking to you
And I'm sad that you can't hear
Sad that you can't hear
It always ends up to one thing, honey
When I look and you're not there
I need to know you
Need to feel my arms around you
Feel my arms around you
Like a sea around a shore
Each night and day I pray
In hope that I might find you
In hope that I might find you
Because hearts can do no more
Hearts can do no more
It always ends up to one thing, honey
Still I kneel upon the floor
How can I tell you
That I love you
I love you
But I can't think of right words to say
I long to tell you
That I'm always thinking of you
I'm always thinking of you
But my words just blow away
Just blow away
It always ends up to one thing, honey
And I can't think of right words to say

Your music comforted me as a young girl going through horrific abuse. I had a transistor radio that I hid under my mattress. At night, I would stay up late into the night listening to all the best artists of that time. While I enjoyed the music I heard through my little radio, your songs were the ones that made me feel safe. Thank you so much. To this day I play your music and am so grateful that you've shared your incredible songwriting and singing talents with the world.

I am 70 and I had a dear friend back in the 1970s who introduced me to Cat Stevens and it dawned on me recently that he was gay and he just couldn't tell me that this song tells of how he felt towards me. Poor Michael, he as his father did, died young 41 I believe and this song always brings back lovely memories. He got me into motorcycles and we took off on a loooong ride to Northern NSW on our Yamaha 350 R5s.

This is likely my favorite Cat Stevens song EVER! It was SO beautiful and he sang it so well. It brings back so many memories of my youth to hear this. I never thought this song got the attention it deserved. If I remember correctly, it never was a "hit" song or a song played in the top 40 or on radio. So a lot of people probably never heard this song unless they were a big Cat Stevens fan and bought the album. Even a lot of Cat Stevens fans likely missed out on some of his best songs, and that was because they probably didn't buy "Mona Bone Jakon". That album was as magical as Teaser and the Firecat and Tea for the Tillerman, but SO many totally missed out on it because it was one of his earliest albums before he made it really big. How he had such fine music at such a young age is truly incredible. He was truly gifted.

Laurie, Twenty years ago I said goodbye to you and several friends... nothing formal, we just drifted apart after an intense couple of years working to protect our food supply and promote organic farming. . I recently reached out to Mark and you, Laurie. Mark and I began talking irregularly, but you and I did not... I didn't try enough(?)... I was concerned my contact was unwelcome I love you Laurie, and found out you passed away recently, alone, in a medical rehab center... and I wasn't there for you. Cat's song now has a profoundly different meaning for me I sing "How Can I Tell You" for you, my lost love. I'm reliving all I can remember... I miss and love you sweetheart, but I am permanently saddened. "... I'm always walking with you. But I look and you're not there..." Michael
