Yuval Noah Harari, the writer of Sapiens, Homo Deus and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century shares how he thinks Coronavirus is changing the world. When are we going to go back to normal? What is going to happen when the epidemic ends? Is contact tracing something we should be worried about? We met with Yuval Noah Harari to talk about the important choices we're currently facing, discuss the possible future scenarios that might expect us once Coronavirus ends and ask him why we weren't as prepared as we should have been.
Yuval Noah Harari is the best-selling author of Sapiens, Homo Deus and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century.

Rudolf Boukal I doubt our leaders at the national level would give anyone with clear, coherent ideas like this any thought. They don’t even listen to their own experts half the time. But I agree his message is optimistic and does show some possible paths forward. At some point, voters are going to have to decide if they want more of the same old institutional politicians that ignore crucial systemic problems, or if they want _real_ change where it’s needed. Necessary solutions aren’t at all hard to decipher, especially if you use history as a general guide. But people need to wake up from their propaganda bubbles and quit believing the nonsense their party leaders keep telling them. This whole left/right hyper partisan world we find ourselves will be our ruin if more people fail to break free from it and see things objectively.

Harari is concerned about the abuse of personal data, psychological "hacking," and total surveillance, but it seems to me that by allowing so much data to be collected would be to place upon the government an irresistible temptation to abuse these technologies and their findings. The safest course of action for the public would seem to be to avoid the risk of tyranny altogether and to deny the state so much information.

@@thatdude79ab @susy dyson In April 2020 when the whole social distancing business began, the police in an affluent town in my state employed a drone to monitor people’s distance on streets and parks. The drone is made by Draganfly and they claim it can also detect heart rate, fever, symptoms of Covid and other vital signs (blood pressure maybe). The police claimed it had no facial recognition-faces fuzzed out. Of course there was much uproar. When the police demonstrated it on a line at the store it was precise about the distance so if you miscalculated 6 ft the drone flagged you. Symptoms of Covid are also symptoms of colds, allergies, various respiratory problems and what a fever temperature is, is a fine line. A company in the US experimented with a RFID chip on willing employees. The thing is, some people think these new things are kind of neato like all the exercise apps or having Alexa sitting in your home. Can Smart TVs watch you? Plenty of videos tell you what you should turn off on your cell phone. Your TV could watch your eye movements and expressions to determine what you are thinking, enjoying, etc. So much online and now with an orthopedic group I go to (I would not upload my photo). Fingerprints, your prescriptions, your grocery bill is online so you can see what I’m buying. China has now limited how many hours you can spend playing games online. All this monitored and violating that dings your social credit score. What if they said, “You’re buying too much junk food.” It goes on and on. Very invasive and dystopian to be watched, manipulated, lose autonomy, and lose privacy which is basically no freedom. No freedom to be left alone, to make mistakes without governmental punishment, controlled, etc. Some people might like that, most people don’t. Who does it benefit? Is that at life even worth living-in bondage? Soulless? Why bother with climate change? The earth will go on fine without us. You can read the vague version on the UN website about Agenda 2030 that they wrote in 2015. One goal is to end world poverty and hunger. They’ve got 8 years. They are nuts. You can’t take people seriously who set ridiculous goals. Harari had said at a WEF talk four years ago that AI, etc. is inevitable which is to say people have no say about what some group of people want to do. (Often megalomaniacs.) It’s not inevitable-you put a stop to it. Thoughts?

*This is one of the best Q&A sessions with Yuval Noah Harari on this subject currently online.* _The main reasons are that the questions were intelligent and YNH was allowed to give his response without interruptions. Thanks to @Stefanvovic for listing the topics covered! Each of that deserves a discussion on its own._ *My take away lesson - TRUST!* Trusting scientists, in our neighbours, in communities, of people we do not know... to rebuild institutions of trust. This 'trust' is something we have sadly lost. The future is less to do with finding a vaccine than (as YNH says), than finding this Trust, that is essential to our survival as homo sapiens.
@filminginportland1654
@filminginportland1654 4 жыл бұрын
martycrow It is essential. And declining trust in institutions and government is one of the major blows to a democracy or a functioning civil society. Once trust is lost, if it’s not restored, a societal collapse or substantial decline typically follows before too long. This has been recorded throughout history. Best wishes to you during this time.
@andrewmaher8409

@@filminginportland1654 I agree that trust must be restored. But it must be restored but those who have betrayed the trust. We should not be expected to ‘find’ trust when it is not deserved. To do so is not virtuous, it is naive. As he explains the politico media institutions, the medical science industry, big tech, and more... Currently, very few of these deserve trust. We need to be open to trusting. But looking at the balance of any particular case, that trust must be at least half deserved before handing it over. Certainly there are individual scientists, journalists and even politicians who are trustworthy. I hope they are brave enough that they can influence their institutions to consistently take actions that rebuild trust.

Before the pandemic covid-19 started to affect people, they were busy talking about politics about society, about communalism, and many other issues were addressed, but not the biological body that each one of us possesses. But now we have started to talk about our immune system, and the need to strengthen our body. Now we have started to understand herbs and the self healing quality of our body. Now we have started to to understand the divine intervention and blessings that work for our body, and mind but we do not let it take place because our own psychological, mental, spiritual and emotional toxicity. So among the several pros that were brought into our lives along with the covid-19 situation, one is that we have started to take care of our body and putting in efforts to know how it functions. Thankfully we have drifted from many undesirable topics and moved towards our own emotional, psychological, and biological betterment. Mansi Arora ( mona) from india

That isn’t what he’s saying. He’s saying ‘in a properly functioning democracy, leaders will admit mistakes.’ We don’t have, and never have had, true democracy in this world. We have hybrid systems that employ certain elements of a democracy. And many of those systems have long been poisoned or exploited by things like lobbyists or campaign contributions such that our leaders aren’t leaders at all. They’re often just vessels to push specific agendas. Certainly not all of them, but enough to cause real problems. This is akin to any sort of discussion over the merits of a free market or capitalism - we have neither. Again, a hybrid system is employed here. The closest thing to a truly free market might be certain segments of the black and grey markets, though many of those markets are also heavily controlled by cartels and the like. So any discussion of the problems with a system or the merits of a system really don’t work when we don’t even have said system to begin with.

I like this man. He says that before opening up our economy, we should investigate what measures worked in places like South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan so that the easing of restrictions on the population won't result in a renewed spike in Covid cases and deaths. The reason that might not be possible in the USA is that we here in America are not being guided by an enlightened federal government that sets wise standards and procedures for every state. No. States and even counties and cities within states are setting guidelines that differ from one another. And, as long as all borders are open and porous, areas that are trying to stop the spread of the virus in their communities by social distancing will have their efforts subverted.

When youngsters are put in buddhist temples,the goal is human success,to " conquer"the biggest obstacle for human success the " I want". discipline instead of freedom,infrastructure of the temples with no possibility to escape or be distracted by desires -food, sex, entertainment, shopping , fame, glory power and so on for maximum benefit of human evolution and success. The only hindrance is human resistance. The world outside ,institutions,systems created by adolescents are not supporting human success, on the contrary they are preventing it and supporting human failure, and that human failure is what we are living now-freedom without responsibility.

Good points - health data needs to be confidential & shared but not for commercial use only for preventative medicine. Invention & innovation rely on pluralism & the capacity to synergise ideas which are driven by freedom of different consciousness that can be fused

It is the function of the party opposed to the one in power to point out government errors in democracy. When the party in power is voted out, that party has clearly erred and must improve or change. Great if the party in power changes by itself, but in case it doesn’t, your vote can put an end to that party’s power.

About going to a doctor in the USA. Even several decades ago. You get empty promises of confidentiality, as well as forms to sign giving permission to share everything about you with some insurance company that is NOT in any enforceable way bound by those promises.

There are way too many variables... going to a doctors appointment is a closed system whereas everyone being "chipped" is not. You cannot compare the two instances.

Mike Dwayne Being “chipped” is also a technology that is very nascent and not at all ready for widespread deployments. There’s no infrastructure for it and it’s nowhere near where it would need to be in order to roll it out to everyone. It’s also very likely to be extremely difficult to legally enforce. Far more likely they’d use smartphone apps. And even their use would be extremely tough to legally enforce nationwide. You can’t force people to buy phones and install specific apps in the US. At least not yet. Something like that would be challenged in federal court for years if not decades. Any sort of solution will be something run by private corporations that the people will ask for. That’s how most things tend to work.

Human is still a hindrance and human success is still an ideal but also a possibility if human understands what success is. When human success is a reality on this planet, human is in balance, the population is so minimal that even with the kognitive abilities available for all and of coursenconsciously used, there is no sixth extinction or climate change Then and only then is human sucessful.
