Hi random stranger on the internet. Do you have children of your own and if not, will you kindly share your age and social standing in society? My theory is that antinatalists are young people and come from broken households if not broken societies. Or they just suffer from the 'white guilt' pandemic. I ask this with no ill intent or malice, I genuinely would like to understand why you would think it a good thing to stop procreating. @@daleburrows2662 yes. Let's start with your first point about forcing people into existence against their consent. It is right to force someone to do something if that benefits society or the person being forced. For example it is right to pay taxes and forcing children not to cross the street with a red light. The second point is if this benefits the person who is being born. I already mentioned previously about the societal benefits of such choice but let's ignore this point for now. Being alive is in the overwhelming majority of cases sometimes positive for the person in question. This is proven by the fact that the vast majority of people would rather be born than not be born and people who kill themselves are an absolute minority. When people are asked how happy they are on a scale from 1-10 the average is well above 5 meaning that for the majority of people being alive is a good experience. Living a happy life that is worth to live is easy and far more likely than living a sad life that is not worth to live. Therefore forcing someone into existence is right because the benefits outweigh the negatives by a lot

Even if you understood the inner workings of life it still wouldn't be justifiable to bring a child into this mess knowing the amount of suffering and harm they could potentially endure. It would make you more knowledgeable in guiding them through life yes but there are limits to what you can do and you cannot guarantee a child's happiness or prevent their suffering.

I'm not exactly an antinatalist but I totally agree with Yuval here. Only the thing that holding me back from this stance is that if it were not for human or even any form of lives what a boring place this universe will be. And there's certain beauty and mystery in being conscious and able to experience beauty that this universe can offer. I also believe in the utopia in the future where human lifespan will expand so that the needs for procreation diminish.

The solution is practicing abstinence, and properly managing your finances and health, to a point to where you have land and are growing your own food. The real issue is that most people want to live in a completely fabricated reality called a city, instead of in nature. Yet they don't think of this as selfish when cities destroy nature, ehen ghey could live oof of the land and help the ecosystem of earth by tending to their land properly (regenerative agriculture). Imagine if we only did things we were certain of? Raising children is not for everyone. It transforms the landscape of life into extremes. It supercharges meaning, and drives you in a way that only another parent can fully appreciate, because another human is now relying on you. You're no longer looking out just for yourself. I respect Harari's work but I think he just drank the stupid juice. 1) we live in one of the best times in human history, poor people in developed economies have better living standards than kings had 1000 years ago. 2) Why do you need to understand life in order to have a child? I don't understand the physics behind sunsets yet this doesn't prevent me from enjoying the beauty of them. 3) only people who don't have children think like that. No loving father is so nihilist. When you have a child your whole life and meaning of life changes. You start living for your child and your life is filled with purpose. A new way to justify making one’s life all about meee

Children require extensive resources to provide a good upbringing. Someone who chooses not to have children has the capacity to use those resources elsewhere, and not necessarily on themselves. For example, childless person may use these resources to focus on a career that works towards the alleviation of suffering (i.e. science, social services, medicine). A childless person may also choose to adopt, providing care to a being already in existence who would otherwise be left in destitute conditions. I see no reason why choosing to be childless is inherently selfish or self serving.

@@colinn1898 that sounds true in theory, and I’m not saying being childless makes you inherently selfish (there are horrible parents), but I don’t think what you’ve stated corresponds with some quick observations. For example, all but two of the top philanthropists of modern history had children. Which counters a few of the points you made. Also, giving a child a good upbringing isn’t this all draining burden like you seem to be implying. Myself as an example, I still donate about 5% of my income on charity, am working on a career that I hope will reduce suffering. Most of the “extensive resources” come out of money I used to have spent on pleasure activities (I travel less, and buy less entertainment for myself). Also, potentiality does not equate to actuality, most of my friends are childless and their lives are geared toward their own personal happiness, pretty much exclusively. And given the “childless lifestyles” displayed on social media, this seems to be the norm. Having kids presents a fairly unique opportunity to literally put someone’s interests before your own, which being childless doesn’t offer. Finally, I don’t consider adopting as being childless, you have a child when you adopt, simple as that.

If parents had some innocent urge to comfort the afflicted and satisfy the needful, they'd adopt, foster, volunteer at nursing homes or engage in other acts of altruistic service. There is no shortage of people and animals already in existence in need of great compassion and concern, there's no necessity to create new life to satisfy those nurturing tendencies. People have their own children to satisfy their need for possession, they want something that belongs to them right down to their genes. People have children of their own in the hopes they'll cultivate a mini-me. It's much easier for most people to invest themselves in something that looks like them or shares some other physiological kinship. Family is fundamentally an inane irrational bigotry. Unlike racism, sexism, and most other forms of crass prejudice, nepotism just happens to be considered virtuous.
