This song is likening Ciel's and Sebastian's relationship/contract to a normal one. It's basically Ciel saying that he prefers to be in this relationship which is like a cage. Than to be free. He says that others are selfish (and himself sometimes) for seeking freedom from others. He also says that the only "freedom" he needs is to be in this contract with Sebastian. That he doesn't need freedom if he has Sebastian. When he says , "you look sad whilst you are sleeping" I think sleeping is referring to the fact that this person is living in dreams. Ciel thinks such a person (who can't face reality) is pitiable. This is because he thinks people can't obtain this freedom.

No, it could be Sebastian. The song takes the perspective of Sebastian as a demon that wants to be freed. Ciel looks sad when he's sleeping and he needs support. The demon doesn't mind staying beside Ciel because he has a newfound perspective towards real freedom, where staying by Ciel's side regardless of the contract is also a form of freedom. Ciel's name means the Sky. So in the sky with Ciel in it, Sebastian doesn't mind being 'trapped' in it because he chose to do so, even with the contract in place because he cares for Ciel and Ciel brings him inner peace. Of course, Sebastian is not human with human feelings. So take this song interpretation as you will, because it can be a general song about caring for someone too.

My opinion on the song: A guy is trying to reach out to the one he loves in the midst of life's troubles. He requires the company of his beloved for courage and strength. He wants the beloved to stay and accompany him to soar the skies together. He wants to be free like a bird soaring the skies. He said everyone looks to the skies because they are yearning to be free but are unable to be it as they are bound to the ground and that saddens them. (I think the main point was that he wants to comfort his beloved that everyone is the same. Everyone has their troubles and all want to be free and that desire becomes their only goal which cages them. But for him, he does not care about that. All he wants is his beloved to be with him) Strictly my opinion though!!

This is SO BEAUTIFUL thank you so much! I've noticed the eng subs for Black Butler's op/ed are often mistranslated, sadly. (Here there's a few places I would've translated differently but I'm not even Japanese so nvm) It's a shame some fans don't know the meaning behind this song, I feel it ties so well with the anime. That is the way the lyrics of this song touched me, like something that I cannot describe just feel it, without any label, but definitely not romantic, it cannot be labeled because is not physical, it is, for me, something more and more profound and beautiful. And in the context of the history of Sebastian and Ciel relationship, what I mean is that they were so close and some sort of together in that very same wave, they joined in the feeling, despite of their tragic circumstances.
