Oh man I've been waiting for this, Andrew Jones used to work at KEF and helped "pioneer" their UNI-Q design which is has tweeter inside the mid range driver, my father has KEF c75's from the 80s and they sound great. I picked up q100s for my desk not too long ago and they're awesome as well. Would love to see a review of any KEF speaker on this channel.

Once again, A. Jones takes the high dollar speaker manufacturers back to school on how to deliver stereo realism in the consumer home at a working man's price. I doubt most music & home theater enthusiasts can hear a difference between, say... $200 a pair ELAC B5 Debut Line vs matching KEF $1000 a pair . I believe Andrew Jones opened up the world of good stereo sound reproduction in an affordable fashion to the real world music lover/home theater enthusiast. With videos like your's "Zeos" we the consumer, can ball park it down to a reasonable choice of which speaker we can use in our homes. Thx for the reviews!

Can anyone clear this up for me. UK amazon has Elac Uni-Fi BS U5 Slim Bookshelf Speaker Pair - Satin Black at £599. Am I right in thinking this is NOT the same speaker in the review? I can't seem to find a UB5 on U.K amazon.

Hedley Marks it's not the exact model but the core components are the same. For UK/European market Elac made the slim model with same sound but slimmer design and painted cabinets (with a higher price as a result). In the US they offer both but I'm not sure if they offer the non-slim versions in the UK. I have the slims and they sound great (compared to what I had before)

Andrew Jones was previously with KEF and the Uni-Q driver is very similar in design. The Q Series would be close in price and would be interested in the differences heard between them.

The Elac Navis (Elac Argo) sounds better than the KEF LS50W to me. Even less directional, fuller sound like floorstanding speakers. I wonder what the Uni-Fi series would sound like compared to similarly prices Kef models though.

The 16th of this month is your show's 3rd anniversary. I think an award show is in order? The 1st annual ZTV Music Awards? Best budget bookshelf speaker category? Best powered monitor category? Best subwoofer category? etc etc I dunno It would be nice to have a summary of this journey in a special format to commemorate the journey and maybe you can share how your speaker/equipment philosophy has changed as a result of doing these reviews?

I have a pair of Uni-Fi UB5's, and a pair of JBL Studio 530's, and I love them both! However, I enjoy music through the 530's a tad bit more. The music seems 'livelier' via the 530's, and the horn-loaded tweeter element seems to reproduce highs with a bit more accuracy and nuance than the Elacs. They're both top-notch.

Andrew Jones is a very talented guy. I met him in the 80s when he was at KEF. If you want a good pair of speakers but don't need the power handling of a pair of ATC SCM11's they make a very similar neutral sound at a fraction of the cost. Bloody good speakers.

Zeos - if you are still reading comments PLEASE try picking up the Pioneer Elite SP line (bookshelf or tower). They are extremely similar to the Elacs but + Atmos. On sale, you can get the towers for $900 (from $1,400), and the Bookshelves can cost $450 instead of about $750. I'm torn between the Elites and the Elacs but I'd guess the Pioneers have a better enclosure. I want to know which one is "better".

I believe a more indepth comparision between theeeese and the jbl 530s is needed. if these beat out the bar that is the 530s, details on how and why they are would be helpful. just seems like a short review for potentially a great pair of speakers which lacked comparision on their magic or if they even had "it".

I have these with a uc5. Love em for music and movies, but IMO, a sub is highly recommended (I'm using a 12" Hsu). I agree w/ Z, a 6.5" version of this would be ideal. Highs, detail and imaging are way better than with the debuts. I bought the b6 before these and returned them. But they are unforgiving and not very efficient, so you better have good source material and at least 100 clean wpc (at 4 ohms). If I was looking to use the speakers for music only in 2.0, I might just stick with the b6 - deeper bass, more forgiving and more efficient, not to mention cheaper.

Here it is, May 2022, and I just bought some of the last of the UB5's that are in the ELAC America warehouse. They are pricing them to move, just $288 plus shipping. Of course they are known as the UB51's now, which is why ELAC wants to get rid of them, because the UB52's are the new darling....even though they aren't even "new" anymore. I'm going to be using them in a near-field setup exclusively. Funny how you wanted a 6" driver in those....if you haven't done so, you need to check out the ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers for a mere $1200 a pair. They might be the ELAC you've been waiting for. Thanks again for all you do. Now I need to get to Hart Audio and order myself some new cables for my HiFiMan headphones.....

I have these on stands about six inches behind and offset of my desk hooked up to an Onkyo A-9010 and the imaging is astonishing. Vocals are dead center and I can also confirm the 'wrap around' effect Zeos mentioned. For music these are sublime, and for gaming they provide imaging better than my Sennheiser HD-650. My SB1000 should arrive today, so I definitely agreed with the Zeos' claim that they have adequate but not awesome bass. I rarely listen louder than about 70-75 DB but I've cranked these and they get a bit 'shouty' at really high volume. It's not a concern for me and the way I listen but if you like to get really loud you will want to audition if you can as a lot of the musicality seems to disappear.

Great review just found your videos today while looking for Elac reviews. Im looking for my first HT setup to go with my new 4K TV. Looking at an Onkyo 656/757 currently but I'm not sure which speakers in the Elac series to get. UB5 in a 2.1 set up. B6 and C5 in a 3.1. Or maybe go for the F6 in a 2.1 setup. I understand a 5.1 would be better then a 2.1/3.1 setup but rears would be a pain to wire and budget wise I'd rather get a good 2.1/3.1 setup and later on get the rears instead of getting a cheaper 5.1 and being disappointed or wanting to do a full upgrade in a year or two. Thanks

Hi Zeos. Recently i got these Elac Uni-Fi speakers along with the Sonos Amp (mainly because of the streaming capabilities and its power rating). However, after hooking them up I'm not sure if I'm getting the desired loudness. They sound amazing at low volumes with laid back music but I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong? I'm a novice and just getting into good equipment now. Hope you have some advice. Thanks.

I think Andrew Jones designed these speakers for deadmau5's Seeya song he played it in some demos. I play the same song at home with a capable amplifier with plenty of head rooms and there are plenty of bass at loud volume. I still prefer with a sub woofer for below 80Hz. With other songs the bass are not quite as pronounced, but I don't have other speakers to compare to.

Hi Mr Z Review guy. Ive been enjoying your reviews a lot and they are helping me build my home theatre. I would love to get the UNI FI speakers. However, I have a Pioneer Elite SC-95 and it says it can drive 4ohm, but would they still sound good with just the receiver pushing a 5.4.(1) set up. The overheads are single coaxial 4 ohm as well. So if I cant I will settle on the Elac Debut line. I currently am running the Pioneer speakers by Andrew Jones. I like them so much I want to try his higher models though Elac.

I just put the 6's back up on the doomstacks where they belong. The imaging isn't as good as these UB5's. The bass is STRONGER but not as natural sounding. And the 6's get an un-holy amount louder then anything else I have tested up to the PSA's which were impossibly loud.

I know this is an old video, but after talking to some pretty solid audio engineers, turning the speaker upside down changes the baffle step. having said that, the fact that these are on pedestals might negate that, but if you use the on a book shelf might be a problem. or not. just pointing out placement might be a subjective thing. I have reverse engineered speakers, and after talking to the engineer, (even though the cabs were 5" high) it was decided that flipping the drivers was a bad idea.

how do they compare to the B6 modified? I'm really looking into this, and I am going to modify them myself by the guidelines that were set. But how would these compare? And I guess that these speakers would be best accompanied by a decent subwoofer to get smooth full range, right? I like the 3way part where you get the vocal range in the 2-in-1 cone. But how substantial is that difference to the ear? I'm truly looking into them. But it's a steep step in money. I can get the B6 for 200 euros a pair. I can get two pair for less than one pair of UB5. So I value your opinion. :) I'm not rich by all means.

@TijmenJanssen
@TijmenJanssen 7 жыл бұрын
Edward Prudhomme yeah, don't think we'll be getting an answer to that. But what it seems to be thus far, as far as I know, the ub5 are better overall, better highs and because of the three way with the vocal range within the top 2 in 1 tweeter cone you get the best imaging where the vocal range seems to come from one single spot. Only thing it lacks is a decent bass, but some reviews say the b6 has a little too present bass. Depending on placement. Also ub5 has better internals, where the b5 and b6 have just a box. For full range you'll definitely need a subwoofer if you are going for home theater. But that probably would be best for the other ones as well.
@edwardprudhomme7470
@edwardprudhomme7470 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, but just looking to use these in a small office and definitely don't plan on using a sub. Thinking bang for buck the B6 maybe better for me and invest in a little better amp, possibly a tube amp. I'm afraid without a sub, the UB5 may not put out enough base for my liking. Not that I'm looking for thumping base, but something musical. Did you read this article in Stereophile on the B6? I might just pull the trigger on the B6 and hope they make a UB6 later (UB5 with a 6.5" wolfer) www.stereophile.com/content/elac-debut-b6-loudspeaker#zjMv6SxwrEMYItd3.97 Good luck, sounds like you can't go wrong with the UB5, especially if you add a sub, but in that case I would probably pull the trigger on the Debut F5 or Uni-Fi UF5's. thank you for the great review of these ELAC Uni-Fi UB5 speakers, do you by any chance know of a good and affordable a 3.1 speaker set that has two self-powered compact speakers with a self-powered sub amp that is either wired or wirless. that have good solid bass and good EQ spectrum sound? I want to use them for a indoor cycling class that I often take outside, I drive the music from my phone music player. I also really like you speaker stands, cool design. thank you:)

Hi Zeos, i would love to see a review of the Nubert nuvero 60. But these are pretty rare, because you only get them from the nubert homepage, so i don't think that someone would send them to you. What about a patrion special for the nuvero 60's? Greetings

Elac Uni-fi UB5, no doubt. Especially if you have a more powerful amp.

Zeos, would you go with these for $600 CAD or the B6 for $325 CAD? These will be going into a 300sqft family room and i will be starting with a 2.1 used as a home theater until i can upgrade to a 5.1. Which center would you recommend for the UB5 or the B6 to give the best vocals for home theater?

Klipsch recently got bought out by a company called AudioVox, and most of the model lines have been reworked (cheapened) as a result. Basically, the Icon line became the Reference line, and Reference became Reference Prestige. The new Reference speakers, while still possessing great sound for the price, don't utilize the great driver technologies that really make Klipsch stand apart: "Cerametallic" woofers and titanium tweeters. Sorry if I'm kinda dropping a bomb on you. It just bugs the heck out of me, like they're keeping secrets.
@kuhenelan
@kuhenelan 7 жыл бұрын
CaveManta No problem. I appreciate the long reply and honest answer on YT. Better to find out before a purchase than after. However from what I can see Klipsch seems to be utilising the cerametallic woofers and titanium tweeters for the RP150M.
@CaveyMoth

***** That's right! Basically, the speakers with a "P" in their name have the good stuff. The P must stand for Prestige.

so would you say elac b6 have better bass than unifis? are the B6 a better buy than this ones? what do you think of the wharfedales diamond 10.2? those seem like great speakers

Yes the 6's put out more bass then the uni-fi's. I haven't spent enough time with the 10.2's to judge them properly.

up close the 530's still edge it out. The Unifi's like a bit of space.

I agree with 'Z Reviews'. I have both the 530's and the UB5's, and there is something magical about the 530 sound. It just sounds more 'lively' and musical than the UB5, but not by much. Both speakers are the clearcut winners in this price point.
@mikechivy

I now have both. The treble is better on the unifi's but the overall midrange and bass is better on the 530's

the problem with this review is once your in to the pythagoras triangle formula quotient the bell waffles will always resonate in response to the harmonic displacement effect of the molecular quantum field guides.. so I didn't see you adjust the 15 Mil overshanked coaxial sprong wangler... this would maximised the wavelengths when listening to Bachmann -Turner overdrive
@horizontalaptitude

thanks mate I always new the quark space would displace the crayons if I pumped the cones hard enough .. I was thinking I might try to encapsulated the wave modules as they burst through the diamanté diamond regions of my ear lobes...so I personally think reviews like this are invaluable to fingerblast my vulcanised stratospherical ears to another dimension so I'm defently going to........ play...... close attention ... I hope that makes sense ...... it will do for someone trained in quantum mechanics... and molecular stupidtography

I bought a pair of these based on all the breathless reviews. After breaking them in for 80 hours, I found they have uneven bass, forward midrange (boxy at 500Hz, shouty at 700Hz), and diminished highs. They are also very directional, and after setting them perfectly for the listening position, it was immediately evident the people sitting on the left and right sides of the sofa would hear almost nothing from the tweeters. My Sony 9000 ES also ran very hot, and it is rated for 220W /channel at 4 Ohms. I really do not see what all the fuss it about. I returned them after 3 weeks of trying to like them.

I want you to listen to me, as these will be the most important words you have heard in regards HiFi speakers. Take a pair of KEF LS50's, and audition them, you will be shocked, end! They work well loud, they work well played quiet, they work well near on a desktop, they have excellent bass extension, they play every sort of music excellent. They are silky smooth, and yet not boring sounding, in-fact they are exciting, they have loads of detail and yet don't sound clinical, they have massive spacious stereo imaging. Owww how you have to try them!

YES! I believe Andrew Jones was a key designer when he was with KEF, and he helped bring about their 'UNI-Q' driver, before ELAC was even a gleam in his eye! So, consequently, KEF's uni design is older and more refined than Elac's!
