Loving my HD 650s the best out of all the cans i have tried in the past couple months.... before these i had the 598hd but they were too "sharp" sounding to me, but i love how the hd650 is neutral with little bit of warmth, I imagine pouring luke warm honey down your ears to feel the same as how the HD650s sound.

First off, kudos to you for doing this in the first place. Second, I've never heard the HD 700 and so cannot comment on them. However.. HD 650 is NOT brighter than the HD 600. HD 650 does NOT have a bigger sound-stage than the HD 600. HD 650 cable is way better quality than the HD 600. Clamping force, when new, is exactly the same. Bass IS thicker on the HD 650 compared to the HD 600. HD 650 IS warmer than the HD 600. Otherwise, brilliant review.

Okay let's address your issues on cables. 1. Thicker cables generally last longer at the cost of being stiff and bulky. 2. The HD 600 cable is MUCH more replaced than the 650 because it's so thin it splits easily and does not feel like high quality. 3. The indentation is very easy for aftermarket people to go around. It's there so you can press it in and twist the cable so that you don't accidentally yank them out. Now to the HD 700 not being comfortable 1. The material is called Alcantara and it is also the material used on the HD 800. It is meant to feel plush and breathable and I find it the most comfortable material. 2. I have never heard someone complain of their ears touching the inside cup of the 700, so you must have huge ears. To the sound quality 1. Many times vocals sound smoother in lower quality audio equipment because it smooths everything together. Natural voices 90%+ have a slight rasp to them if you listen very closely in person or with high quality. I found the vocals of the 650 and 700 better than the 600, but the 650 did sound better to me. 2. The soundstage in the 700 is not so large that it ruins the sound. If you want to hear a soundstage so large it sounds artificial, listen to the HD 800's (I still love the HD 800's, but that's my only complaint) To the overall build 1. Hard rubber is less likely to break on impact than plastic, which is why they went with it 2. As neutral as most people think it is, if the response curve was flat on the HD 600's, most people would call it "too much bass" because they don't realize music is supposed to have slightly more bass than everything else. As a musician I know that you want bass to be first, then treble and then mids. The mids are the most important, however your brain picks them up easier than the treble so it doesn't need to be louder, and to get a "full" or "rich" sound, the bass needs to be a minimum of the same volume as the mids, if not 1-3 decibels more down to 20 hz Oh and P.S. If you lay the HD 700 cable flat and take the wrinkles out on the floor, let it sit for a couple days and the problem of it getting wrinkles and twisted goes down to almost zero. And the reason the HD 700 cable is so thick is because it is a braided cable, and they protected it with Kevlar for strength

I know what you just went threw and gave all this nice information, but honestly, I just don't like wireless stuff. It's sleek, sure, and that's nice, but I would rather not have to charge my headphones ever, which was a problem with a wireless headset I had. The HD600 headband can be stretched to give as little clamping force as you like. First thing I did with mine was stretch them out like crazy, now they barely stay put on my big head and that's just how I like them. If you search around there's even a way to stretch them without damaging the paint, I didn't know this 13 years ago when I stretched out mine though - so my ugly fake marble paint job is slightly chipped.

It all depends, for me personally, I remember it well. There is one audio shop in Vancouver which specializes in high end headphones, and when I walked in I took a listen to one of songs (no lyrics in it) with the HD700 and it sounded par none, everything was so clear and it sounded like it was way out of my head. So I agree with you, I love the 700s as well.
@mustafasadmansakib6 жыл бұрын
The 650s do have a different build. They have a tougher metal mesh for the earcups, stronger spring in the headband, and a stronger “baffling damper” inside the earcups to reduce resonance and structural vibrations. The drivers are also tuned differently, uses different diaphragm material and voicecoils
@derbigpr5009 жыл бұрын
A couple of things wrong in this video: 1) HD650's do have noticeably more bass than HD600's and don't have more treble, they have less, but it's more refined and faster, so it sounds clearer. They definitely aren't brighter than the 600's, that is totally wrong. What you experienced is due to insufficient amplification, with a higher league amp the HD650 bass comes to life and gets more punchy and strong, it has more potential than the HD600 bass. Less powerful amps can't push through the impedance spike that the HD650's have in the lower mids and bass, where they're actually closer to being 600 ohms, not 300 ohms. 2) HD650's are not more money for no reason, again, your source and amplifier are not good enough to show you why HD650's are more expensive, you can't review headphones like these with a Fiio E9 or a similar amp, even if it gets loud enough, it doesn't sound as good as it can. HD650's have superior resolution, speed, clarity, extension in bass and highs, etc. it just becomes more obvious with better equipment, the better it is, the bigger the difference between HD600 and HD650 becomes. 3) Out of the box HD650's are significantly tighter than HD600's, they have a stronger clamping force, yours must have bent metal pieces in the headband.
@ZReviews9 жыл бұрын
***** The clamping force was indeed the same when new. The 650 pair I reviewed was obviously stretched out quite a bit.

derbigpr500 Hmm, looks like they may have changed the sound signature in later versions. Here's what I found on head-fi: "The HD650 was known by detractors for having a veiled, dark treble, a compressed soundstage, and a boosted, almost obese sounding mid bass; while the HD600 was the neutral of the two. However in 2010, Sennheiser retuned and updated the drivers on the HD650 to give it a less thick and a more energetic sound. The bass was lowered, the treble was raised, and the soundstage opened a bit more as a result. 2010 updated HD650s can be identified by their silver diaphragm shields, vs the black shields of the 2003 models." Not confirmed source, but the guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

Good review Z. All of these are excellent headphones. The HD650/600 are the easiest to get along with and enjoy the widest range of music over the longest duration. The HD700 is technically superior - better dynamics, transient detail and imaging. I do agree with Zeos, that they would be hard to recommend at their initial price. The price has gone down considerably (50% off of MSRP or better), however, and at that price they are easier to recommend for certain applications. The HD700 does not sound the best with everything. If you listen to classical, jazz, ambient, acoustic, orchestral, soundtrack, they are excellent. Pop and compressed dance music will sound tinny and harsh on the HD700. Fatigue will set in with music that is less dynamic, as your ears will be assaulted at upper frequencies that are usually attenuated out with consumer sets. The HD650/600 has a dip in the upper register so that you still hear detail but it never hurts your ears - though it will lose out on total performance. People will sometimes mention the Sennheiser 'veil'. It is due tot his attenuation of the upper-range, that ends up not have enough brilliance They also has a unique baffle design, which if it works with your sense of perception, will create an incredible sense of space especially if listening to binaural sound. For gaming, the HD700 is up there among the best because of this. For watching movies - HD700. Construction is more premium than the 600/650 to be expected. All are very comfortable, but they can be initially a bit too tight with their clamp (you can loosen these with wear). HD700 cord is crap, quality crap, but practically bad. Easily replaceable, and the indentation won't affect most aftermarket cables from going in, and if you have problems use an exacto knife on your replacement cables. If you stick with the original cord, recommend use rubber ties to keeping it coiled. While something like the HD598 may initially wow you (good headphone for certain), the HD700 is the opposite. It may initially make you recoil in horror. But for some, who have certain tastes, and who the paradigm works for, they are golden. For most listeners, the 650/600 are good recommendations based on their price, performance, and ergonomics. Same with the Fidelio X1/X2. Audeze LCD2 if you can put up with ergonomics and want something that has better bass, transient detail than the 600/650s. The LCD2 are my choice for an all-rounder. TH-x00,610, Denon AH-D2000/5000/7000/7200 or similar if you need more bass. Need something that absolutely slams, hits low bass registers, flat mid-range tonal accuracy, and detailed but not shrill high-end get MDR-7520 (it can be driven by almost anything, is rugged and best for studios).

Had the opportunity to test the 650,600,700 he400s and the grado 325 with a burson conductor as an amp and the ak100II as source. I honestly liked the 700 a lot. Then the 600 or the 650. I mean 650s are great for how they sound. But the 700s are technically superior in every way possible. And i might disagree with the comment for vocal clarity. I will say the hd700s have clarity and more then a few notches then the 600,650s. In the full freq spectrum. Now we might not like how in the end they sound. Might be edgy or grainy. But they are clearer. Much clearer The problem for me was that. They are trying to do things which the planers are known for. And thats the problem. The 400s and i are toe to tor with the 700. Because they sound similar The 600,650 well might be better or worse depending on the taste to the 400s,i But when compared to 650,600 the 700 were superior But then planers do not understand rise time fall time delay. Those bastards are bam bam bam.the old sens do

I appreciate the passion, time and effort that went into this review. I've owned the HD600, I've listened to the HD650 and HD800 but I actually chose to buy the HD700 for $495 from Amazon. They were too great a deal to pass up at that price and, IMO, a happy medium between the strength and weaknesses of the HD600 and HD800. I LOVE the soundstaging and the overall balance of these cans. I do understand the comments about vocals. It's a bit of a small trade-off for that glorious soundstaging. I've carefully mated them with a Schiit Audio Valhalla 2 OTL headphone amp and the Schiit Audio Bifrost Multibit DAC. I find the Valhalla 2/HD700 combo to be magical. As for the stock cable, it broke in rather quickly with a little special attention and became way less "janky", though I think I'm eventually going to buy a custom 8' Black Dragon cable from Moon Audio to try and squeeze a bit more performance out of the cans down the line. Different strokes for different folks. Thanks again for doing what you do.

Nah man.... I'd like to read these "some people" who say 650 is brighter. Hd650 was always darker and warmer than hd600 (more elevated mid-bass, recessed lower treble in the 650) .The older models of 650 are said to be even warmer than the recent ones (sennheiser changed the pads in 2014, might be that...). I only know the sound of the recent 650, and I've had a pair of hd600 for 10 years now; 650 are considerably warmer and darker than 600, and the difference was even greater with the past models.

Never heard such a nonsense. After playing for 200 hours, which nearly all good headphones need, these headphones are the best available in the market under € 1.000. I've been wearing these headphones now for months and more than an average of 5 hours per day, and I never sweat "under" those ear pads, nor have I ever worn a more pleasant wearing headset. The sound is even more detailed and impressive than on my Mezzo Utopia, Woodside ESA225 / SC26 / WS2 stereo. The only correct critic refers to the cable.

The 800s are kind of like the 700s with the sameish peak but not as aggressive, and 6k instead of around 7k, as well as better stage I would imagine and likely better bass extension but not as much bass. They're real boring and very diffuse field sounding, unless you like to pick on tiny details in classical music or something. I don't think you'd like them. And the word you're looking for to describe the treble of the 700s is "sibilant"
@ZReviews9 жыл бұрын
metal571 I know sibilant and the 700's never quite got there. The 2000x's are more... well more than the 700's. The word I would describe the sound of the 700's would probably be lost. All focus.
@metal5719 жыл бұрын
Z Reviews just too wide a stage? Sounds like AKG soundstage. Strange also that they aren't that sibilant despite the peak being just right there in that region of the FR.
@brianpacheco19276 жыл бұрын
I personally didn't find the 700's sibilant if your DAC is right. Pure SS and you'll definitely get that from either or but the treble 'bite' gives it enough energy in that region from getting boring and of course that peak will bother people differently or not at all. I actually found the 400i's with stock pads sibilant to the point where I couldn't use them until paired with a warmer amp.

Paying more than 3x for amp/dac combo than the cans is stupid. You're always better off upgrading your cans first. That said, if you already owned the 650s and were looking to keep growing with them then upgrading your setup would help you longer down the road since it would serve any new cans you get in the future.
@brianpacheco19276 жыл бұрын
Trust me it's not, I believed in that bullshit and the O2 is a fine amp but it's not honestly nowhere near powerful enough to power any decent power hungry cans and is a bit bright. That NWavGuy can make measurements all day - point being it's not going to sound loud without distorting on anything high impedance ~300 ohms or more.

Just one thing I want to add, if you're looking to replace cables for HD800 or HD700, you're looking at 300$+ for replacement cables which only end in XLR....and it doesn't even say how long they are on the sennheiser website....you could of course get a generic from amazon...30-100+$, but that's also kinda like playing Russian roulette. i like versatility in a product and i hate when companies pull this proprietary appley bullcrap.

+TheRoshan89 agreed, better to have a fully loaded top model honda than a base level bmw... also fun fact: you cant get replacement ear pads for hd 800s or 700s ANYWHERE unless you do some kind of Z hack.

Collin Lewis i dont know tbh, though i think considered the 650s are meant to be open back it wouldnt sound good...tbh im personally not a fan of modding headphones like that, if its not good out the box i'd buy something else, but imo the 650hds are the best headphones on the planet so if i had to replace the earpads i would only replace them with the OEM ones.

Great no BS review! Just found this when looking for HD700 reviews that are brutally honest. based on your review; the difference among these 3 headphones is almost like how Beyerdynamic does for the DT-770, 880, and 990s. Each changes mainly on soundstage, but overall very similar in what they should cost.

+ancient122 That's quite a big assumption, and the Golden Ears measurements were done just 3 years ago. You also have no idea how old the ones that Z reviewed are. Assumptions all around, and no evidence to support that the drivers have drastically changed the frequency response to be brighter than the 600s (which again, is contrary to over a decade worth of graphs and reviews).

I've owned all 3 of those headphones. The 700s were awful - On some pieces of music the treble actually hurt my ears. I was recommended to buy a headphone amplifier (£450) to go with these - still not good enough. The 650s - too dark sounding imo and too warm. Sound though was rich and lush. The 600s - The best. Great clarity/detail and punch.I disagree with you on the lack of sound stage but this could have to do with the amplifier you are using. I get that headphone sound is highly subjective but these are my true opinions.
@HummingbirdSound8 жыл бұрын
+MrTabs64 The amplifier will only allow you to drive them better. No need of it if you want to invest in sound quality and buy a good soundcard (most of them have built in amps and can drive up to 5000 ohm, so...). With an external ur242 (and even with a ZXR) and a simple free equalizer, the hd 700 beat hands down any of the series, and are worth of 2000 bucks headphones. If you cannot afford a free equalizer to make them sound heavenly, you are not worthy of them...! I would never recommend the hd 600 (and even less the hd 650) over the hd 700, unless you only like very neutral sound (and very mushy bass, with the hd 650)... but in that case, there are way cheaper options out there nowadays that perform the same and often have a better warranty (although Senheiser usually makes good quality).

I have to say I have watched this review twice. Even then I ordered the HD700 to check them out. For the record I will be more than willing to return them, but I am so curious. The reason is there is only one headphone that everyone keeps saying super comfortable and huge, accurate soundstage. I have a Fidelio X2 right now, and while I like it I really don't think it's that comfortable. I hate the suspension style and as a glasses wearer clamp load is always an issue. I have owned Sennheisers in the past (technically still do) and clamp load always plays a role, but the HD700 seem to not have that issue. Sure, you can bend the crap out of other Sennheisers and it gets better yet not right. Then there is the oval shape which is ok but I really want to check out the D because I really find the oval is just a bit off (circle like on the X2 is certainly not right and they are heavy). I really, really want something that sits on my head that is not too heavy and sits around my ear without too much pinch. Is that too much to ask? From everything I have learned the HD700 are the closest while still being high end yet not over $1000. I will report back on my findings (I should get them in 2 days). For the record can we please get over plastic being cheap? A well done plastic can be light weight, durable, and perfect for an application if it's done right. Yes, it is often cheap yet sometimes it is the perfect material. Get over it. BTW...I want the large accurate soundstage for gaming. Same thing for comfort. I probably use my headphone for gaming 75% of the time, yet still want to use them for music also. A large accurate soundstage and comfort is so massive for long gaming I put them first. Then add in music after that. If I really want incredible music I have multiple different speakers that create great sound for that (spent thousands more than I have on headphones). Yet my headphones have always lacked. So I am going for these, and if not this then the HD800 and maybe the HD800s when they come out. Sadly all those wonderful planar headphones simply don't have the soundstage I am looking for.

I tried to buy the 6xx on Massdrop but I was unsuccesfull due to the traffic on the web page. They are exactly the same as the HD650 but with different cable (shorter with the small jack at the end) and different colour and packaging. For $199 they were screaming deal. So I just found on Amazon UK there were the HD650 for £249.00 which is as much as the HD600 anywhere else. So I ordered them. They should arrive later this month. I was able to try them for about a 2 minutes in shopping center when I was in Japan and I liked them very much despite all the noise around. I have HD558 right now (I will have to buy AMP though too). BTW: Why do the HD558 have supperior cable? At least I find it of better quality.

all HD 6 -- series are such an uniqe type of a headphone - a rare combination of both a very spacious pad in terms of height and width and at the same very little distance from your ear to the driver. that means a different wear of the pad have an extreme impact on the amount of treble or amount of veil to the treble, the width of the soundstage or the slapping' / 'tang' effect when low mids are tickling your eardrums. I see so much comments about all the differences between HDs and really.... I currently own black silk with driver with round copper early HD600s and silver metal HD600s, my father owns HD6xx and my father in law owns black silk early HD650s and silver metal HD650s. I recently decided to spend a weekend on comparing the shit of it including modding.... The headphones sound different a bit but basically VERY VERY similar to each other... ok early black silk round copper HD600s have less bass overally, and both HD650s and HDxxx have a +1.5db midbass, +0.5dB treble and a tiny bit more air over 10/11kHz in comparison to silver metal HD600 and they react a tiny bit just a tiny bit different to amplification and that's it.... BUT .... BUT... when I swap pads between these headphones (each is original sennheiser pad that came with the headphones and differs from one another in amount of wear and hours spent on head).... the differences in sound signature are like 3 x times bigger than when you compare all the HD600-650s and HD6xxs but on the same pair of pads. so my take on this is that when I see people comparing used Sennheiser flagship HD models I basically know they are mostly reviewing the pads ;) and by the way Sennheiser changed pads some time ago and people complain on brand new HD600/650s that these are no the same then they were before... right vocals sounds a tiny bit less natural and are bit more sweet and distant to you... but believe me - this is because of pads :D and also... in the internet you can find a lot of comments that even the same revision of HD series can sound different.... guess what :D? pads!

***** What is not true at all? That he is VERY biaised...? Completly true pawl. If only he had said "I prefer a more neutral sound, but these sound great for those who prefer more treble and a clearer bass", I would undersrtand your comment... did you even watch the video...? Groundless bashing. The sound is amazing, the comfort is above any headphones you can possibly buy, the materials are top notch... yet he just bashed them at every corner and even turned positive points into negative, like their lightness (while he did not even try them properly; what kind of a "review" is that?). You can say "they are better in every feature, but I still prefer a more neutral sound so I would not choose them because of that "; this would be an accurate review for them. Not the way he did it.
@HummingbirdSound8 жыл бұрын
***** Yet they are. Nothing to do with different. Everything is of better quality in them, from building materials to sound details. You simply cannot compare the details, the clarity and the sound stage of the 700 with previous models, whether you like their signature or not (which, by the way, can be easily tweaked with a simple synth...). It's thousand miles above them. Did you even try them...? PS: the comfort in the 700 is simply higher than of any headphone on the market; light, you can barely feel them on your head, and ear-shaped (this he got right in the video; every headphone should be ear-shaped). I can go 8h long without feeling them on my head. The 600 already hurt my head after 40min - I can actually never wear any headphones for more than one hour without having to take a break; with the 700, I can.

@HummingbirdSound8 жыл бұрын
timecage I actually owned both the hd 600 and the hd 700 (sold the hd 600), and the gap between the two is gigantic...! The hd 700 are definitely a huge improvement in every single aspect, and only heavily biaised people would say the contrary. There is no question about which one an audiophile would choose; it they were gaming graphic cards, it would be like choosing between a 680 gtx and a 980 gtx... I can understand you want a more neutral sound, but you cannot deny the superiority of one headphone over the other - also, today you can find better "neutral" performances in other brands for the same price OR you can even obtain this neutrality with the hd 700 while mentaining their overall sound quality and sound stage by adding an amp and eventually an equalizer (but you cannot get the sound stage and the overall quality of the 700 with the 600). So the hd 600 and the hd 700 should not be compared differently than the two graphic cards I mentioned above if you want to remain objective of their quality and performances.
@HummingbirdSound8 жыл бұрын
timecage Well, you're right. Kind of. Because I would argue that if you are willing to spend half a thousand dolars on a pair of headphones, you have to be an audiophile. Honnestly, for gaming and casual listening, I don't see why proletarians would spend more than 150 bucks (you have excellent headphones for these purposes under this price). If you look at these headphones as non audiophile gaming headphones for example, even the hd 600 are too much (and not very appropriate, since the sound stage is close to zero)... If someone is talking about 300-400+ dollar headphones, it is usually because sound quality begins to really matter, so that they have to be kind of an audiophle. If not, it would be like putting ten horses in front of a carridge while not needing more than two - money and energy misplaced.
