That viscous diff simply has to be awesome, it has 42 discs. ...I mean, who wouldn't want a diff that holds the answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything?

The whole concept of viscous diffs is that they don't use conventional liquid/gel, but instead a non-Newtonian fluid that gets THICKER (more viscous) as the temperature of it goes up (such as when 1 wheel begins to spin much faster than the other, ie a low traction situation).
@blainechappell53835 жыл бұрын
It's not exactly as the temperature goes up, but more when a force and shear acts upon it. The higher the temperature, the lower the viscosity and the less affect shear and pressure have on the fluid.
@Typho0nify Жыл бұрын
@@blainechappell5383 You are correct to an extent. It's more that the differential doesn't have adequate cooling and high heat is the main source of failure on almost everything. Although, it seems like Nissan deliberately cost engineered it to bare minimum, as if they know people will most likely modify/or weld them as drift missiles.
@GeloNegron6 ай бұрын
@@Typho0nify No, lol, they cheaped out forsure but not for us to make missiles 😂 they’re borderline bankrupt so they gotta cut corners.

Was about to comment this. Acutely, higher temp will make the fluid more viscous, not less. It needs to act as an open diff when at normal temp.

Hoping you guys go over the benefits of a Salisbury (1, 1.5, 2 way) over gear driven in regards to controlling over/understeer through throttle input. I feel like there isn't anywhere near enough info distributed on this topic when discussing limited slips and locked diffs.

my diff only locks up... on occasion. when the rear wheels are in the air and you spin one, the other goes the opposite direction. I have an open diff, but for some reason sometimes it'll do some great 2 wheel burnouts instead of the usual one wheel peel

So a VLSD is an open diff with added resistance?
@ioanbugheanu68365 ай бұрын
Can be a lot of resistance. Far as I'm aware the fluid can become extremely viscous when exposed to friction/heat from excessive differential power transfer. It's sensitive to high temperature which makes it temporarily more resistant, but it can break down over long exposure.

Can you use conventional GL-5 to nissan R200V (VLSD) without LSD additives? FSM says use "NISSAN Differential Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80W90 or API GL-5 80W-90." I was wondering if I can use any GL-5 (without LS spec or LSD additives) to our R200V (VLSD)..

Ya got it backwards. As the goo gets hot it gets thicker. Non Newtonian fluid as several others have pointed out. Its thin under normal temp to act as an open diff. It just might not get much thicker if it's old and broken down.

Could you just put higher viscosity oil in your stock VLSD?

You can but it wouldn't be beneficial to the performance of the LSD. The VLSD's friction plates are in a self contained unit sealed away from the differentials oil.
