For someone who has watched this for the past three years about once a week, I can verify that this is probably the best cover of Midnight Rider you will ever hear.

I think he actually “exploits“ the nuances of this melody and lyrics a little better than the original. I say that, but the original is what it is, and it’s what we all first fell in love with. The melody and lyrics didn’t exist prior to that. This guy, and the rest of us, had the benefit of being allowed to “chew on it“ for whatever length of time- and this could partially account for an enhanced interpretation, Which is what I would call this. I am always skeptical about anyone proposing to cover this song, but this guy took the old classic car and detailed it, and it reminds us why we fell in love with it in the first place. I have to agree with the above statement. I have always felt that the mariachi band fanfare style of bridge section in the original was puzzling, uncomfortable, and somewhat out of place, (and it might’ve even been done at the insistence of some producer). This was refreshingly absent here. Made me want to hear it covered by Chris Isaks.

Not hardly. Look up Gary Nichols and get with the real authentic hillbilly in a man. You have to be half feral to sing this song right.

Just spent about 2 hours watching every video I could find from this guy. Don't know how I'm so late to the game on this but his Harding Prison recordings were a word in perfect season. And then I find that he's a Gregg Allman fan and Midnight Rider just happens to be my favorite song! Truly an anointed witness in Williams and his music!

I've only just discovered him too. And I just had to buy the adding prison cd.

Same he's my favorite singer now! Just because I can relate to his original music ! I'm a slave myself and I'm in the process of breaking my chains it's not a easy as it sounds but I feel safe now!

I just discovered him as well, about two months ago. I love his voice, great peaise music. I wasn't a Greg Allman fan back in the day, but this song is an exception!

I grew in the BX, NY, which is very far from this type of music. I moved to the mountains of Western MD, close to the WV boarder and grew to love so many different types of music... this song in particular is one of my favorites. I absolutely love the emotion and sincerity in your voice! Well done, sir!

Zach is playing in our town tomorrow night. My brother is in prison and I was just telling him about Zach. I know that he would love him. This song (and this version) is a great entry point for those that need an introduction.
