How do you catch yourself from not defaulting to memorizing in anki since it’s so easy to make cards with image occlusion and actually prioritize understanding?
@nachelia3 жыл бұрын

@femmelace2 жыл бұрын
late response, but ask yourself: "why does this operate the way it does?". it's a simple question, but if you find that you're at a lost to explain why something is the way it is, and you're just regurgitating the definition, then you're only memorizing. also, ask yourself: "how does (a) relate to (b)?". once again, a simple question; but if you're revising a topic and you can only repeat definitions and concepts, but not how they relate to one another, then you're memorizing. mind mapping after you've finished revising is a quick way to test if you understand how concepts relate to one another. when i'm finished looking over cards and notes, i pull out some scrap paper, and in my own words, try to relate my understanding of each term to one another. if i find myself lost, then i know i don't understand the topic. this might not work for everyone, but it works for me, hope this helps!

As a pro slacker last minute hardcore cramer (ik its bad, forgive me). I've been doing this method but with excel. In the end it's about marking weak/difficult points to optimize time. Let's say in a module I have 40 chapters and each of them is about 1h-1h30 of "in class" lecture. I put 1 to 40 in a column (vertical) Then horizontally, I'd write 1 word for each weak points/ hard notion, usually a noun (usually pathologies that are hard to remember) and try to remember as much as I can on the topic. Ex: immunology--- 8/ thymus --- digeorge. Then i'd try to remember all around it. I don't even bother with specific questions, it's waste of time and space in the excel. Thanks to this method I've been able to study 5 months of lectures (of 4 different modules) in exactly 3 weeks and 4 days. And when I say i didn't even open a single lecture before strating to cram, I mean it. Those were 4 weeks of intense cramming but smart cramming with about 8-10 hours a day. I prefer excel because having an overview/ global view on a whole module is key for "branching" memory. And the best thing is that I didn't even needed to anki or practice test (because lack of time). If there's objectives given by the professor, I make sure I'm fully aware of them when I lean my lecture. And if not I try to put myself in the shoes of the professor and guess what the professor want, the key messages and points etc. Then I try to see if there's previous exams of last year and just skim the questions to know what awaits me. I dont even do these questions if I'm short on time.

Hey Melissa, At my school, we have an exam week (dedicated study time) that finishes with an exam on Friday. So, the first 2 days of my 9-day plan (Thursday/Friday of the week before) are while I am learning class material. However, these first 2 days are not long study days, as mentioned, these are just quick scans of the material to identify and write down my 'Rongies.'

Also thers some questions I don't understand and have no godamn clue how to gradually build up to that and irs stressing me out, Its time consuming to learn the information and then put the content into flashcards and then do exam papers then find out how to do the ones I got wrong (which I don't have a clue about figuring out ) and then write them into flashcards and then work out a schedule and method for spaced reppitition and if to do that online or not.

And what if you are only given information by the lecture up until the exam? For instance, any school that I have ever been to, there are always courses that do not upload the lecture material until the day of the lecture. That is how many of the courses at my institution right now work. We will be taught new information all the way up to the lecture right before the exam.

Although I knew reading, underlining and re-reading for long periods of time wasn't working at all (I was basically trying to not lose the focus rather than learning and understanding new information), I've kept on doing it for years (why, tho??) Definitely applying it for my EIR and nursing "oposición" exams. Cheers!

8: 24 " if you can measure it's not working for you" I really like how you articulate that bit. Any method requires self experiment on yourself to see if it is really effective for yourself. Great video! How do you find yourself balancing time between reviewing lectures/reading through lectures and do Anki? What I first started trying was not even looking at lectures and went straight to making Anki cards. But when I was reviewing Anki cards, I found that I didn't have the "context" that surrounded the cards--ie., I could remember the cards well even after spaced repetition because I couldn't really put those pieces of info together into a larger "story" or framework. Did you feel like this as well?
@ZachHighley3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I never reread lectures seriously because it’s been shown to be ineffective. I’m releasing a video this Friday on exactly what I do but you really want to make sure you get an understanding before making the cards. That understanding, for me, comes from a third party video like boards and beyond or sketchy, then I READ over the individual cards in the Anki browser to make sure I understand them, then I start going through the cards (you can check out my normal daily study routine here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJuXnZtvh6h5sNk) I will usually do the above the day before the lecture, then when I show up to the lecture I have a good idea of what’s going on and just sit and watch. I don’t take notes or anything. I may make a flashcard or two on something that seems like a big picture idea I should understand. If when you are reviewing the cards you realize you have lost the big picture idea stop, google/textbook/lecture whatever it is you are doing, then in your head try and imagine you were explaining that material to a naive friend, then add that explanation to the “extra” section, or somewhere that pops up after you answer the card, if the Anki card. Also, this is my regular study “plan.” As you saw in the video above my exam review is just filling in those gaps from the regular semester, but, really, if you study consistently with Anki/understanding you shouldn’t have that many Rongies.

I'm the guy who relied on overwhelming memorizing since I tried to turn every single piece of info into Notion toggles, which almost equals wasting nearly 88% of the prep session. I scored like shit even after running through that tremendous amount of questions, and not until now did I realize it's because of the lack of REAL testing, which I mistook as merely scanning through information. Now it's 3 weeks out from the biggest exam of my life, and I'll try this out and max it out!
