I’ve never seen him so relaxed and confident in an interview before. He even voluntarily talks about some songs coming from personal experiences, which he only used to do when being pressed to. I guess this shows that he’s grown a lot in the last years. He’s still the very thoughtful man that he used to be, but so much more mature. Great to see. It makes me wonder how he will progress in the next decade. This is truely the most interesting interview I’ve seen with him, and I’ve probably seen them all.

This interview is very funny to me. At times it definitely felt like Zach was just like, "This is MY hour with Hozier and I'm going to talk about everything *I've* ever wanted to talk to him about," more than any other one I've seen, which... Me, too, tbh.

I know he’s never gonna read this. But I need to have it said. When I first heard ‘take me to church’, it touched me so deeply. It moved me to the point where I went out, bought myself a keyboard, learned how to play it with 0 experience. It took me WEEKS. But that is how much that song meant to me as a wee 13 year old. It propelled me to take 6 years of music in highschool and learn 3 more instruments. Music was a massive part of my adolescence, and it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for ‘take me to church’.

At first I was unimpressed with the interviewer who didn’t know how to pronounce Hozier’s name, but it ended up being a very in-depth interview. I was surprised Andrew opened up that he wrote Francesca & unreal/unearth for a particular love who hurt him. He generally deflects any personal questions. It made me feel sad someone would let him down, and incredulous anyone would be stupid enough to let a man like that down. They did a deep dive into his creative process. Such a fascinating, compelling, brilliant man.

So grateful for the thought and care Hozier puts into answering each question. He selects his words as intentionally as he can, considering he has to create his replies on the spot, without having a chance to edit what he says like he can in his writing. He speaks confidently yet with an awe-inspiring humility at the same time that is clearly authentic. Watching him evolve into the man he is today (by watching interviews from the very beginning until now) has been a joy-his message, his core values, have remained the same, even in the face of his celebrity status and worldwide following. While others have given him nicknames such as “bogman”, “little/big woodland man”, in my heart he will always be the Irish poet and troubadour of a generation, par excellence.

I usually love a Zach Sang interview, but I wasn’t impressed by his demeanor in this one. He seemed impassive and generally uninterested in the questions he was asking (on top of that, couldn’t even be bothered to make sure how to pronounce Hozier correctly 🤦‍♀️). Whatever the tension was, it felt a bit disrespectful of Hozier’s time when he always gives such well thought and earnest responses, and that tension is palpable for us viewers. And then Dan saying “he’s gotta go” twice near the end… idk it rubbed me the wrong way. BUT we still got some great conversational moments. Hozier truly is one of today’s greatest lyrical geniuses - I can’t wait for the rest of the album to be released!
