For anyone who doesn't know, NEVER put oil on the block before the crank bearings. Surface MUST be clean and dry, to avoid spinning the bearings. Lubricate the bearings after installed, before attaching connecting rods.

Well done buddy to see it through to the end. I have the same Motor 1975!. However, i hope it will Not be a regretfull decision for you when you chose Not to fit New Main & Con-rod bearings to this engine. (not expensive) One of the crankshaft bearing shells also sets the Crankshaft end-float limit, which has a direct effect on the timing gears & oil seals wear. I hope things will be ok in the longrun. Cheers from the UK.

That clear tube to the carburetor is a safety feature.. If the diaphram in the mechanical fuel pump ever ruptures, it will flow up the hose and flood the carburetor and stall the engine... Cars don't have them because it wasn't a big deal to dump fuel on the road, but if you dump fuel into the bilge, boat go boom lol.. Its supposed to be tygon tubing since is fuel resistant... I ended up buying some off ebay cuz I couldn't find tygon tubing locally in a big enough size...

Beyond impressive considering the enormous complexity of such a job and the video editing, the amount of time and expertise that it takes to put all of this together, I don’t know how you do it. I would rather almost buy a brand new boat then to try anything like this. I will stick with just changing my water pump empeller.
@ZachsGarage1

I appreciate your recognition of that. It's funny because I thought the project should only take me a month or two at the beginning. But if ended up taking almost 6 months! The video editing probably ended up taking more time than the boat itself later on in the project

This engine is probably the best engine to rebuild for for first time DIY projects. Like Zack said before in the video, the most important thing of all in this build is to get the two dots aligned on the crank and cam gears. If you mess that up you would have to take the timing cover off, then pull rockers off and then the cam gear to rotate the crank to get it aligned. Other than that, I believe anyone can do it as long as they have the torque specs along with the torque sequence on head bolts, crank caps and rod caps

Great video, only thing I wish you had done was the spec's for the tightening of the bolts and clearance. It would added another 5 minutes and it would made the video complete without buying or searching. Great Job. Ps I would have brought new bearings if you want that far on the overhaul. Between the re boring and new piston and rings what was the cost and the overall cost on your rebuilt?

Hi there Zachs, quick question hope you see this. I took same motor out the boat in good running condition, just wanted to go over everything, replace some gaskets, check every wire, basically to have it ready before summer etc.. I want to bench start the engine just like you did, to make sure there no leaks before putting it back on the boat. I have no spark at all, I bypass the 50amp circuit breaker, also bypass the 50amp starter fuse and nothing. Starter is working, can turn engine over fine, just no spark at all. I triple check timing, ignition, coil, starter solenoid and nothing. I believe the problem is that the wire going to the ignition module has no power, that wire supply power to the module and from there to the coil, then spak plugs etc.. I feel like there a wire or connection missing somewhere. My question is, besides the basic, is there any specific wire or connection that must be made, for example there a neutral safety switch, did you connected that for bench start? Anything will be helpful, thanks in advance.

Never crank an oil filter on with a filter wrench. You just hand tighten until its snug and then go about another 1/8th of a turn. If you crank the filter on, the rubber gasket can twist and leak plus its hell to get it off when its time to replace it down the road. Just a humble suggestion. Also when you tighten the distributor down just snug it up. I don't know how you didn't twist the bolt off. Once again just a friendly suggestion unless you enjoy extracting broken bolts.

So many things wrong with this video, please read on how to properly assemble an engine along with this video. Do not reuse old bearings, they are inexpensive and should be replaced for any rebuild (I see below you comment that the bearing were not worn or scratched, please look at 1:19-1:21 mark, you can clearly see the wear on the bearings) DO NOT EVER use a filter wrench to put on an oil filter, that is only going to cause you headaches when you go to remove it. Last but certainly not least, DO NOT use a hammer and block of wood to put on the harmonic balancer. Congrats on the rebuild, you were very close to to doing it correctly but to be 100% honest you made some very big mistakes that will likely come back to bite you.
@ZachsGarage1
@ZachsGarage1 4 жыл бұрын
First of all, I just want to say thank you for taking the time to watch the video and really get into the details. I think you give some very good suggestions and I hope anyone else learning how to do this reads your comment. Regarding the oil filter wrench, I know your concern is that I installed the filter too tight, which makes it is more difficult to loosen down the road. I 100% agree with you. I almost laughed because my gloves were slippery from applying oil to the filter itself, so I really didn't have much grip to tighten it by hand. I used the filter wrench to get it a bit tighter, but not as tight as possible, being mindful of your concern. I am curious how would you suggest me and anyone else attempting this to press on the harmonic balancer with tools at home? And also the reasoning behind why using a hammer/wood would be bad? I am open to suggestions :)
@samhorn387
@samhorn387 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZachsGarage1 Glad you asked, the tool to install the balancer can usually be rented from auto parts stores but it is like the link listed below. The damage that could be done by doing it incorrectly include damage to bearings, crank shaft, or even the balancer itself. Rule of thumb on oil filter is wrenches should only be used for removal, never for installation. Keep up the good work, nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself!!! I rebuilt the original carb. The only complaint I have is the automatic choke sucks in my opinion, so after the first startup the coke is just open. So starting after you've been running requires some throttle. Other than that it's fine, idling decent, and accelerates great for a 4-cylinder

Hello, and thank you for the video which is very informative. Happy New Year's for all of you . I live in Tunisia (north of Africa - Mediterranean Sea), I have just bought a 5.5 m boat with a 3 liter OMC petrol engine, I read everywhere that the OMC company has been bankrupt since 2000 and its engines are in poor condition from the inside and their spare parts are rare and expensive. the engine that I bought works well (on land, the boat is not in the sea yet), but I do not know its condition inside, in addition its spare parts are almost impossible to find in Europe and I would be obliged to order from USA if needed. I found an identical engine that I could buy for parts if needed. Do you advise me to change to another engine from a different manufacturer (Volvo for example), to change to an outboard? or to continue with this OMC and repair if necessary, which is dear to me. Thanks in advance.

Could be the seal around the transom assembly, putting a bead of 3M 4000( or 4200 or 5200) around the entire outside edge of the transom assembly could fix it, if that is the case. Right when you put it in the water have the engine bay open and try to see where the water is dripping in from

@@ZachsGarage1 I strongly recommend NOT using 3M 5200. It's too strong. If you ever for any reason want to take those parts apart again you'll need to break something. 3M I believe makes the same observation and recommendation. 4200 or Sikaflex 291 are much better for that job.
