When I first started watching your journey of this rebuild, I cringed at a couple methods used as you were working on this. But the more I watched, it came to me that it’s your first time trying to do this with no formal marine or engine rebuilding training. KUDOS to you for maybe biting off more than you could chew, and not giving up on the project. So many people would have thrown in the towel and quit. You should be proud of this accomplishment!!

Nice job restoring all the damage to the boat. Never use silicone on a boat anyplace except for sealing in the windows. It does not stick to gelcoat well at all and tends to peel off or leak. 3M 4200 is a good general purpose sealant that can be removed if necessary. 5200 is their super sealant but only use it for things you never want to remove. That sticks so good, most surfaces will be damaged by the removal process. The normal formula for these takes days to cure, so each has a fast-cure formula. I keep a tube of fast-cure 4200 and fast-cure 5200 around in case I need it. Once opened, it goes bad real quick. Seal it up and store in the refrigerator to keep it useful for a longer time. They have smaller squeeze tubes (like toothpaste tubes) for smaller jobs. I keep a couple of these around as well since I don't have to open a large tube and have it go bad if I an only sealing something small. Now that you've spent all these hours fixing the boat, will you actually spend as many hours using it? A lot of people who fix old boats wind up spending more time fixing than using and get bored with the boat once it is fixed. Don't be that guy!

Hey just a heads up, someone else might have told you but you really want to have your outdrive straight up and down while filling it with new oil. Otherwise your level isn't actually correct and it could be a little low. Enjoyed the videos so far!

Very nice job. Amazing constructions and maintenance. Your stern drive looks like ALPHA ONE. Is it? If you want add a12v mercathode for corrosion protection. Often lubricate the gimbal bearing and every time remove /reinstall the stern drive use grease on the splines. Keep going.

I have the same boat, I am replacing the fuel sender. The original has 3 wires hooked up to the fuel sender. The replacement sender has a spot for only 2. What did you end up hooking up the green and white wire to on the fuel sender? see wire at 25:21/30:05 BTW the videos are awesome. I plan to reference them when I rebuild my floor next winter.

around $300 for the gel coat, I got 5 gallons, and I had extra, probably only need about 3 gallons. a gallon of the hi-gloss top coat was too much as well. Probably only need about a quart of that. Overall around 5k including tools

Zach I have a question for you about the boat work.
@faithwalk2cor578
@faithwalk2cor578 3 жыл бұрын
They make a rubberized coating of different colors used for tool handles. Mechanics and chefs use this for identifying their tools by color from other people. This would be great to use for your mounting brackets that have had rust on them and you have cleaned it off.

I bought these same seats for my boat that I am rebuilding. How do they ride??
@ZachsGarage1
@ZachsGarage1 3 жыл бұрын
They ride pretty well there can be alittle bit of wobble when you loosen where it mounts to the pedestal to be able to turn freely. Other than that good in my opinion. I like being able to fold up the leg support to make more walking room

Should use 5200 below waterline. 4000 will work but better safe than sorry. Especially around an out drive
@ZachsGarage1
@ZachsGarage1 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, but only if you are confident you are not going to want to rip that out drive unit off for a long time. In my case, I use 4000 so that mine would be easier to remove if I need to

Hey Zach...I absolutely love all your videos and the beautiful work you've done on this restoration of your boat. I have a 2004 192 classic cuddy Bayliner that I'm trying to replace the back to back chairs with captain chairs. Could you please give me some advice on if it's possible to get 4 captain chairs on my 19' boat and if so, I must have missed a step on how you made the plate to attach the base of the chair to. Would really appreciate all your expert advice.
@ZachsGarage1

Thanks for watching! The base is just a ~3/4" ply circle with holes drilled then T-nuts from the bottom so you can really crank the bolts down without them stripping the holes

Curious what was the purchase price of your boat? I know the knowledge base you expanded on was well worth it. Just curious if you were to do this for a profit, if the parts cost and purchase price was cheap enough you earn a profit if you sold it?
