This was all a really good learning experience for Zach. I remember being in my late teens/early twenties learning on stuff and they were great learning experiences. Now I’m 50 and I know a lot of shit. Anyone who watches this should be proud of Zach for taking this on.

Just get a 3M Headlight restoration kit. it has the sand papers and buffing compound to fox that up the easy way. all you need is a drill to use it.

You did well, the thing missing would be to clear coat once you buffed out the scratches. Check out ChrisFix channel repairing headlights. I've used the same technique to bring back clear plastic in the past. Thanks for the vids I've been considering bring back an older boat and your vids are excellent 🙂

Zach, I have a 1989 Glassport boat. I am in process of redoing the whole floor and stingers. I was wondering if you know of any upgraded gauges for this model boat. Everything i am doing i leaned from your blogs. I really appreciate your knowledge on boats and the repairs you have made to your 98 Bay Liner. I think you did an amazing job on it. Let me know if you have any suggestions on up graded gauges. Thank You Ron

I'm sure someone's already said in the comments to pick up the headlight restoration kit that fits on the head of your drill. You're very close. I believe it has 600,800, 2,000, 3,000 and a polish compound that works amazing. But you could use what you have. Redo the 2000 & 3000. Use more water. Make sure each level is done thoroughly and has and even level of frost. Finish with the polish but skip the wax. Good luck.

400 and 800 is too rough that's what you use before you paint. You have to use 2000 3000 then buff and polish. Love the videos you can do a bunch of other stuff I wouldn't ever try.

Sand w 1000. Then 2500 followed with 3000. Then polish and wax. Or even better, headlight restorer kit. 100% guaranteed will work.

Dude all that sanding is not necessary just use OFF deep woods.. and rub fast with pressure. Repeat if necessary. Then once it's nice and clean seal it with a good wax. Do the same for headlights works amazing. Ya welcome.

With all the work and resources that have gone into this boat do you have running tally? Im sort of in the same position as you and wondering how far to take the boat apart to rebuild. Is it worth it?
@ZachsGarage1
@ZachsGarage1 4 жыл бұрын
I do have a running tally 😎 worth it? For the knowledge and experience, I think so :) purely financially, not as much, I'm up to about $6k which is still much less than a new boat. But maybe not worth all the time put in to it.

@@ZachsGarage1 That's not bad considering what you'll end up with in the end. I'd love to go as far as you have but the family wants to enjoy it in the spring and I take my sweet time. Your videos have helped me with all the engine work I had to do and the lower end work. Got some soft spots on the floor I'll tackle in the spring. Your videos have been fantastic and will reference them as I go along with my rebuild. Keep up the great work!

Buff the plastic out. You can make it like glass again with a buffing compound and a soft wheel.
@matsfredrikhalvorsen7639

I fear that the treatment you have given the cover will only work temporarily. When the polish is exposed to sun and heat over time, it will become foggy again. The reason that wax / wd40 (and so on) works is the way it fills the scratches from the sandpaper. So when the light hits the glass (or paint on a car) it becomes shiny. Since the wax does not stay n forever, the scratches from the sandpaper will eventually become visible. Suggestion: headlight restoration kit, or sand the plastic down even for even finer grit like all the way to 7000-8000 grit. Finish by polishing with a machine and a polish intended for plastic. That will make the cover look brand new for a verry long time.

You drive me nervous about this video..!!! You where doing good, just sand down to 5000 grit, then you can use a polishing tool with super fine high gloss compound. Spend more time on it !!! Also there are specific polishing bars for glass finish acrylic...

You need to soak your wet sand paper in water with a few drops of Dawn before you start trying to sand then compound polish with a small electric buffer. NOT BY HAND!
@ZachsGarage1
@ZachsGarage1 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea on the Dawn, I'll have to try that! :) I have a power buffer, amzn.to/33nclVO but it's pretty big. It seemed like it'd be to big to use on a piece this small with curved surface. Did you have more of a palm / handheld one like this, in mind? amzn.to/3ka2KIy
@lahotsrouge
@lahotsrouge 4 жыл бұрын
Zach, Harbor Freight has a very cheap Palm buffer ( www.harborfreight.com/power-tools/polishers-buffers/variable-speed-polishers/6-in-compact-palm-polisher-69487.html ) that would probably work for this project. They have a Braun that is about $30 more, but it has more versatility. Look for videos about that model on KZbin. You can get that plastic crystal clear again! Also, there is a rubber type pad that will grip your work piece, or wood and metal, and prevent it from sliding around while working on it. Good luck, you're almost there.

You can buff it extra fine with sandpaper, then use a heat gun to lightly reconstitute the plastic to a fresh appearance.
