Hello! Simon Cardy from IGN here. Hope you're enjoying this new series! I hope to have more of them coming in 2024. Just a quick note to that I may have completely forgotten to ask about Man of Steel in this interview.....sorry about that! Let me know which directors or cinematographers you'd love to see in this series below. Happy new year!

I actually think Zack Snyder is underrated. He's not everyones cup of tea, but damn is he good at framing and visual storytelling. I think people compare him to Bruckheimer and Bay, but I think he's more artistic in his filming. Do I like all his films? No. Do I appreciate his skill? With out a doubt!

I always appreciated that he has a very distinct style - he's one of those directors where you only need to watch 2-3 minutes of any given movie and know it's from him without a doubt. If nothing else, he knows how to make a cool moment look extra fucking epic. What he does need is someone who reigns him in because he lacks in restraint when it comes to wanting shots look cool and epic (if you try it every 3-4 minutes you hit diminishing returns after some time) and also a good writer, since the characters are often the weak point of his movies if you ask me.

Why do you not like him as a filmmaker?
@impalabeeper5 ай бұрын
@@mikel1998100 He's all style but no substance. Sure he makes cool shots, but a lot of the times they don't make sense story-wise. He loves making slow-motion shots but they don't serve the narrative. His story-telling style is more suited to popcorn movies-- like 300-- when you want to turn off your thinking brain for couple of hours. But he's not great with more serious stories like Watchmen or Batman vs Superman. The love scene in Watchmen is super awkward with slow motion and just hammed in.
@mikel19981005 ай бұрын
@@impalabeeper Yeah I get that. To be honest, I did not enjoy BvS either. I think to me though the overstylization is precisely why I enjoy some of his works. If 300 was made by a different director, it would probably be yet another loosely-accurate history piece, but I think he made something unique in this regard. All in all, i can fully understand choosing substance over style, but if someone is REALLY committed to the style, nice things can happen.

Watching Zack Snyder's favorite shots compared to every other entry in the series really shows how and why Zack Snyder is an inferior director, and plays into the meme of him being style over substance. All the other directors talk about how a shot or a sequence explains a character, or helps tell the story or explain the film or its themes in someway. Snyder just thinks the shots look cool.

@Zed-fq3lj5 ай бұрын
Some may like or dislike Snyder as a director but he undoubtedly has his original, authentic style. 'Watchmen' is still unsurpassed in the world of superhero movies - everybody can only dream to come close to that level of superhero film making, '300' was a revolutionary approach in movie making at the time, while his work on DCEU was interesting and innovative but at the same time incomplete with some major setbacks caused by the Warner Bros.'s haste, impatience and general stupidity by the people in suits...pity 😔. It will be interesting to see what Rebel Moon has in store...
@doc80135 ай бұрын
His DCEU was set back because fans did not like what he was doing. WB acted incompetently for sure but it started with the reception to his universe. Watchmen, in terms of visuals, is amazing. In terms of storytelling, it's incredibly underwhelming, especially when knowing the source material.

So sick of these movies that stage their fight scenes like a dance, where every person clearly knows the next move the other one is going to make, and perfectly counters it faster than any human being ever really could. Mr. Snyder is being modest when he doesn't include the fight scene in the attic between Wonder Woman and the Germans. Beautifully shot and edited. Just like the march across No Man's Land in the same film. Iconic scenes that helped make the film what it was. And after watching "WW '84" there is no way to convince me Jenkins had anything to do with those scenes. There were reports of extensive reshoots after some really bad screenings. And Snyder was a producer on the film. So he stepped in, helped out, and has kept his mouth shut.
