Spiritbox formed 2017 ,in Victoria BC, Canada, by husband and wife duo, Courtney LaPlante and guitarist Mike Stringer, after parting with their former band Iwrestledabearonce, a band Tati had listened to. Zev Rose on drums since 2020, Josh Gilbert (ex - As I Lay Dying) joined on bass in 2022, made permanent 2023. Most of their songs are a mix of clean and harsh vocals, but some are all harsh, and some all clean. 4 EP's and their 2nd full album will be out next month. If you want to try more, "Jaded" or "Rule of Nines" for mixed vocals. "Holy Roller' or "Soft Spine" for all harsh. "Constance' or "ultraviolet" for all clean vocals.

This festival was in Kentucky. The remnants of hurricane Helene had just pushed up into that area and was dropping rain on the festival. One day of the festival had been cancelled. So the ground in front of the stage was muddy. It was probably miserable but people didn't care. Spiritbox and Jinjer share some fanbase so when people saw Tatiana come out people pretty much lost their minds. A couple other artists came up to do songs as well during that set.

Spiritbox' lyrics are often a bit vague/poetic. Courtney said Circle with me is about self-doubt as a creator. Definitely check out more Spiritbox! They have some songs with only cleans, some with only screams, and some with a mix. They try not to stick to one formula. Jaded was Grammy nominated. Another favorite of mine is Rule of Nines, the live one-take version

pretty good understanding. my understanding of it is that the flame and the alter they are talking about in the song is fame, you can circle it and seek it but there will be those that seek to take from you and feed upon you, the vultures.

From some interviews I understand the song was written at the time they went to a bigger label and had self-doubts about becoming sell-outs. So it's a reflection of goods and bads of being on a label that's there for the money, and not for the art.

Yes, it's about fame and the price of success. The vultures are record company execs. The song was caused by Courtney's anxiety over selling out. (Spiritbox had their own record label, Pale Chord, but to get anywhere they had to go with Rise Records.)

Such a great and magical meeting of two of the best in the business. It's really crazy how far away Tati holds the mic when she is doing screams underneath of Courtney's cleans. Arch Enemy, Entheos and Infected Rain are three other bands with female singers that put their own individual stamp in being able to do both cleans and harsh. Cheers.

There are a couple of metal acts where the vocalists switch from clean to harsh to clean. Jinjer, Spiritbox, Vexed, Infected Rain, Novelists, Vintersea, Entheos ( female), Opeth, Allt (male)... just to mention a few

It is becoming more normal now to find female leads in metal. There other female artists in Tatiana’s league, both female leads for the band Archenemy come to mind. Also the female lead for the Ukrainian band Ignea and the female lead for the band Infected Rain has a very similar growl to Tatiana’s. But in my opinion Tatiana is still queen bee.

Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy was also doing metal harsh vocals before or around same time than Otep started. But Angela didn't do cleans.

These are not the only women who both sing and scream. Alissa from Arch Enemy does it too as does Floor Jansen of Nightwish. However, Nightwish does not have much songs utilizing these skills. The closest you get is Yours Is An Empty Hope. For Arch Enemy song with both clean and screams check Handshake With Hell.

The lyrics are more or less about selling out for fame/money... giving up your morals just to circle with vultures. As for their vocal styles, specifically the screams, it's funny to me--and this is not really about what you're saying--but there is very clear evidence of Courtney doing similar stuff to Tatiana and yet people seem to pick out this song as the "evidence" she can't do what Tatiana does. Sure, they have different guteral screams, but what Tatiana does in this song is what Courtney does on her own. Again, not as growly, but similar. If you want an example of what Courtney CAN do that Tatiana does not do, go check out the pro-shot live of Spiritbox doing "Angel Eyes" on this same tour. Tatiana has none of those screams. She essentially does two variations of her one scream. Courtney does every scream you can imagine.

I like heavy music, but not like this. This music is not typical. Spiritbox uses electronic sounding instruments. I am especially annoyed by the drums. My conservatism cannot accept this sound.
