"The number one advice I would give to beginners starting out is; reach out to your heroes. No matter what. Find their email, call them, DM them, do what you got to do. Reach out to them, and tell them you love their music, and you want to come meet them, and start a relationship with your idols. because that's what'll get you to the stars." -- Allison Miller Gold

I went to a Bissonnet Clinic over 20 years ago. Not only is Gregg a very technical drummer, but also a world-class comedian! 🤣 He had the crowd rolling with laughter. He also seems to be a genuinely nice guy. Anyway, I've recently been introduced to the Zack Grooves videos. I like his unique approach as well as his charisma and obvious technical ability! Very impressive!!! Keep up the good work gentlemen!

My number 1 advice for new drummers is to keep yourself healthy. Part of that is protecting your hearing, because drums are dangerously loud; you should NEVER play without hearing protection, and my experience is that there are universal-fit earplugs on the market that sound so good and feel so comfortable that sometimes I forget they're in (I use Westone... ER20, I think is the model name?). But also keeping healthy means taking care of your hands, feet, etc. Drumming can be strenuous and can cause muscle injuries, and here in the US (since we don't have universal healthcare), if you're uninsured and can't afford to see a doctor and go to occupational therapy, a hand injury or something could put you out of action indefinitely (I personally had to take about a year and a half off from drums in my early 20s due to a thumb injury that I had to let go untreated for months because I was uninsured, and then even when I could start going to therapy for it, it had gotten so bad in the meantime that it took a long time to recover even when working with an excellent occupational therapist). Exercising regularly and proper stretching and warmup habits make a huge difference, making those kinds of injuries much less likely.

Okay I'm halfway through the video and I've not heard one person yet say to play to recorded music and learn the exact parts and once you're comfortable with that start to experiment with your own feel. That and playing to a click on the pad and the snare drum independently is the number one advice other than to study all of the greats and learn to play to every style of music IF you can handle it. IF you just can't really pull off Calypso or Songo but are really good at playing straight time and Shuffle with a little bit of Swing then Focus what you are best at if you're not making enough progress at Latin or Jazz BUT every drummer should be able to sit down to any style of music and at least make it feel good.

Basically what the last advice was: Get the music chops but also the social chops and you'll make it. Solid.

Practice goes without sayings. The biggest error I made as a teen (in the late 90s) was not listening to much variety or reading up on stuff. It was all about the punk, rock and metal, and though I knew jazz drummers were the best I was told by my mates that jazz drumming was no use (I was weak willed). It was also difficult to get access to good knowledge in shops and the music community when you grew up in the sticks in the uk 😂 The growth of KZbin has changed the game for all musicians in the last 10-15 years, there no excuse anymore

When I was young I had the privilege to watch VoiVod a French Canadian band, (kinda like rush on speed) up close like stage hand close The drummer was playing these awesome double bass strokes that turned into quads when he played the Tom's and kick he hit all of the punches and signature changes while chewing bubble gum and blowing huge pink bubbles, never will forget that show in Atlanta GA at the masquerade. Check em out he is a very underrated drummer, they have been around for 35 years already. Loved seeing the drummers here too, I'd love to go pro like they are.
