It's actually theorized that the reason no other Airbender has been able to fly was because of the Sky Bisons. The bond they form with their respective bison at a young age is the one of the main "tethers" that effect them, preventing them from entering the Void

Revisiting this episode always makes me realize how much of a bending prodigy Korra is. She's probably one of the most skilled fighters in the Avatar world, but it's usually overlooked because she mostly fights the other top-tier benders.

Something I release is that this whole battle is personal to Tonraq. Like the Red Lotus had tried to kidnap his daughter when she was a child. So to hear that the same group is out of prison and targeting your kid AGAIN. It explains why he has been fighting the Red Lotus the whole. About wiping out the airbenders not being in line with Zaheer's personality/agenda: dont forget the new air-nation arent the only airbenders. There are tons more spread across the different lands that just didnt join or didnt join yet. Also, according to the wiki, sky-bison and air-bison are interchangeable and they are not seperate subspecies.
