Words and actions are associated through training. Of course nonverbal communication is paramount-- for human to human and even dog to dog communication. Therefore, human to dog communication. But to discount verbal communication as confusing simply reveals lack of understanding of canine learning theory. Moreover, fails to give credit to dogs - who are highly intelligent- for being able to learn!

We don't shock dogs to get them to comply we humanely teach them what the sensation means, using very low levels of the ecollar where they can barley notice it. Thanks for posting a realistic training video. It is helpful to see that Border Collies are not trained in a day, and that it is going to take a good year and a half ( or longer!) to really get that trained behaviour to sink in consistently. Hey there Zak, I just wanted to tell you I have been watching your videos for a couple of months now and I even bought your dog training revolution on audible. I was raised with dogs (dad use to be a Lab breeder) I thought I had a good idea of how to raise a pup into a good dog and I've had really good success in the past. I decided it was a good time in my life to get another puppy and so I decided to take to the internet to get some fresh new ideas for when I got my pup and I have to admit that after watching several of your videos that there were several things I needed to work on. I got my little guy four days ago (Australian Cattle Dog) and things have been going rather well. He is doing well with sit, down, focus (look at me), wait, play dead, up, and roll over so far. Been working on stand, that one we are having a little bit of problems with but with the help of your book that I've listened to paired with your videos that provide a great visual I feel he and I are on the right path. Thank you so much for making the decision to take to the internet to help people like me that over the years have heard and used some primitive training.

Kora Lee it doesn’t matter if there’s traffic or not. He has some days to where he’s absolutely perfect and others where he’s just a BRAT! Honestly I think he’s just too smart and overly aware compared to other dogs. We do agility competitions and most of the other heeler owners say the same about their dogs. German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix who is almost 3, but she’s very delayed in her training because she struggled with health problems her first 2 years. Finally got her EPI under control and have gotten back to basics for training, but I need to constantly remind myself to be patient. Thanks for the encouragement and tips.

Zak has really helped me train my Labrador Retriever. I have a problem with him lunging at squirrels and cats. I'm 60 years old and had been drug down many times hurt a couple times pretty bad in some of those. Instead of a choke collar or a pinch collar that everyone I went to for training wanted to use on my dog I started using Zaks training on that too it's working pretty amazing. I live on a limited income and wish I could buy his books being able to watch his videos is very helpful. We will continue to watch videos and work on the lunging problem.

I love your videos, I've learned so much about training my dog. Do you have any videos working with older rescue dogs? training a puppy is awesome but it's like starting with a blank canvas. What are some tips/tricks working with dogs that may come with a little more baggage? We have a new puppy too. I think she may be the same age as Inertia. Our Elsie was 6 months old on Christmas eve. We have been watching you since we got her because we wanted to train her properly so she was receptive and respectful. She has learned sit, down, speak, and her name very quickly. I have tried other things like come when called. She shakes and rolls over but she is still so bitey! I don't know how much longer this is going to happen. She is a Chihuahua x Maltese and she's wonderful and playful. She has had trouble with some commands. She will sometimes leave it alone, other times she doesn't listen. Also, one thing that has confused us is a recent behaviour. She has started to hump her toys even though she has been spayed for about a month and a half now. Like everything, we try to redirect her with her toys (she's very toy and treat receptive so it's quite easy), but her biting is out of control. We've only just stopped her eating her poop (don't even get me started hahahaha). Are dogs usually like this?

I wished you were here in the UK. We recently got a German Shepard and couldn’t understand why she’s so hyper and stubborn with training. Turns out she’s a Belgium malinois. She used to walk off leash lovely but the past few weeks has become super protective of me and lunges for any people bikes cars or dogs that get near. She’s even made contact with a joggers leg. Luckily the jogger wasn’t harmed. But it’s alarming to me and I can’t stop her doing it. Can’t stop her pulling on leash either no matter how many treats I try and tempt her with / praise her with. Even tried stopping and standing still Each time she pulls, now she just sits and then as soon as I walk she pulls again. I’m gonna have to watch all of your videos. They’re full of fantastic ideas. And I realise more often than not it’s me not being consistent with training or misunderstanding my dog. I’m learning a lot from your tips though

I have a 1-year-old dog. he is very scared/ has a lot of anxiety My family & I love to visit new (dog-friendly) places but he is very willy-nilly 1. he is scared of big dogs 2. is afraid of being left in the car (we don't leave him alone in the car, he is just sad of someone leaving the car even if others are in) 3. is afraid of new places (pulls on the leash) 4. seems to chase after the fishing line when we throw it in the lake (& any birds that come nearby / we can't go fishing with him) basically, I want him to not worry/bark at other animals & not pull on the leash

Hello Zack! I’ve been watching your videos for as long as I can remember and I have conveniently adopted a 10 week old puppy around the time you got Inertia. She has definitely been a challenge, as a shelter puppy she is quite shy, but very opinionated, stubborn and with immense prey drive! I’ve been training her myself, but I’m not a professional trainer. I started off being very pro-positive reinforcement, but I opted to use my own method for training. One that involves positive reinforcement, but also corrections (in terms of guidance to correct behavior) and NO physical harm or punishment. (PLEASE READ THE REPLY TO THIS COMMENT \/)

I believe both methods are great and create a dog with deep understanding and a good bond, but Just by pure comparison of PR-trainer’s success I see that their training is much less effective and lengthy. Corrections are not harmful in any way and they are extremely beneficial for the dog to stop misbehaving. For instance, my puppy, that is around Inertia’s age has a solid heel: head glued to my leg and extreme focus even in high distraction environments (we’ve practiced at airports, restaurants, fairs, stores, parks etc), she has learned to ask for permission (by looking at me) to engage with other dogs and people, or just ask for a release to go sniff. She shows great impulse control: football field long stays and long distance commands at those stays, recall… I can even throw her favorite treat at her and she won’t touch it if I don’t allow her. I can release her to it and tell her to “leave it” half way., to go into a heel multiple times, back-to-back. I believe treats also cause the training to be less effective. They are great rewards, but I notice that they are always used as lures and they can become distractions themselves. I prefer to use a mix of praise, pets, treats and toys, too. To create a generalized reward. I don’t mean to send hate or to disrespect you. Every dog is different and everyone can choose whatever works best for the individual dog. In fact, I have the most respect for you and what you do, especially your patience and dedication. I just want to inquire upon the common belief of “ignoring bad behavior and rewarding the good” that PR-trainers have. Why is that so? Thank you for the understanding! Inertia is adorable and I can’t wait to see how far you two get!

​@Alyssa Coon It's great to hear a reply! I'd like to point out though that what you are using (=walking away/ignoring) is a punishment (negative punishment exactly), not a correction. "Negative punishment" sounds really bad, but it isn't. It is one of the four quadrants of operant conditioning: positive and negative reinforcement, positive and negative punishment. "Negative" and "positive" indicating addition and subtraction of something, like math. "Reinforcement" and "Punishment" determine whether the action is used to increase or decrease the likelihood of a behavior, respectively. So negative punishment implies the subtraction of something (pleasant) to stop a bad behavior. It's effective in training, but corrections are different. By definition, correction means to remove the errors or faults, thus guiding from incorrect to correct. The two terms are oftentimes interchanged because one sounds less bad, but they have their own meanings and it has nothing to do with them being "good" or "bad". I use three types of corrections: verbal, leash pressure and hand targeting guidance. Before any presumptions about the "leash pressure" I'd like to explain what it means. I use a half chain martingale (beforehand, I trained my puppy using the same method, but with a back clip harness) applying very slight and gradual pressure when doing a command. For instance, when working on an auto-sit during a heel I will show the hand gesture for the command and slowly apply light pressure to the collar and an instant release (that's why I prefer the half chain as it moves quickly) as the dog performs the command, then praise. The pressure doesn't choke the dog, it doesn't cause discomfort, it's just like a tap on the shoulder (I use no-choke martingales). It creates an association for the dog and when the pressure is applied the dog remembers what to do in the particular situation, which proves itself very effective around distractions as you don't have to use treats to distract the dog from everything else and lure with the distraction (treat) into the correct behavior. It allows you to connect directly to the dog beyond else, because in the end the dog knows what to do, just lacking focus. The dog hears the chain cling as it tightens, before it even makes contact it reminds the dog or taps when there is more pressure to do the same, perhaps if the distraction is too impactful. To use this as a correction I nudge the leash for a light and quick tap (once I have done the pressure association to signify the right command in that situation), so the dog knows the task is incomplete and does better. If it's unclear to the dog I go through the pressure association again and praise to show what IS needed. Or I use hand targeting for the dog to move into position, the second correction that I mentioned. Lastly I connect a word ("no") to the nudge so I can stop using the pressure. After a couple repetitions the dog learns that "no" means to do better and praise means the dog is on the right path. For example, "No" when heeling means to move into the right position so the dog corrects automatically. "No" in recall means to move quicker to me and stop every other activity: I recall, dog doesn't listen, I say "no" "come", instant head turn and my puppy is running back to me, I praise the instant she makes the right choice. Second time around, I only have to say it once. I hope this was clear enough and I would love to answer questions, were you to have any. This is just the method I use, although I really appreciate how open-minded you are :)

Hey Zak, thanks for all the tips, i've been watching only this tonight, i'm getting a puppy tomorrow (Aussie dog). I've made a potty room for the puppy and I'll slowly removes the pads so he learns the texture of it. I live in an appartment (where I could always go outside) but there is a lot of snow where I live so when I work he'll be able to understand that he can resolve his problems on a pad and when im home I can get him outside and play.

Not if it's because my dog used to be a romanian street dog.... he is still just a little over a year old.. but when we go to new places he listens better when we just get there... once he starts to know a place he starts getting more stubborn.... he is a central asian shepherd hybrid so... they are known to be stubborn at times... he is still a good boy though.. I just give him too much freedom sometimes..

Hi Zak, Love your show, helped me lots with training my three puppy. I had been searching for resource about how to stop my dogs taking each other chewing treats. We gave them all the same thing, but they only want the one each other have. I tried to distract the one who bark, reinforce they don't need the same treat. Not sure what else I can do. Thanks

They're superfluous. A dog (even my parrot) can learn commands like "sit, stay, here" etc with your tone of voice, repeating the words of the action in real time & gesticulating simultaneously. In no time the dog only requires the gesticulation.

I use clickers in the Humane Society briefly for brand new puppies, attention deficit and completely untrained dogs and capturing-luring abstract new commands. IOW less than 5%. You really want response to voice and hand signals ASAP for the long run. Will not debate this but the research on clickers has some flaws relevant to conventional pet use all the time ... but I use w very green dogs and as described. Edit ... my marker word is “Yes”

I was planning to get an Italian Mastiff and have heard that they are easily trainable. Do you think by following some of the tips and advice I could train one to be well behaved around a group of people? or at leaast not timid or overly protective?

I know it's controversial but I started using a training collar when my crazy border collie was about 1-2 and it was a game changer used properly. Now she's 4 in July and I occasionally use the collar and only have to use the vibrate to tell her she's doing something wrong and the beeper to tell her to come back or she's gonna be in trouble.

I wish I could take my dog more places. In my defence, we've had huge transportation issues for a ridiculous amount of the time she's been alive, so she hasn't gotten the exposure I wish she could have. But we do what we can and her training still continues. We do still expose her to stuff as we encounter it, too. So it's not like she's just 'seen it all' and that's that. :) Honestly, I don't think it's selfish of you wanting to do a specific activity with your dog and trying to get them interested in it. It's the only way you WILL get to. What would be selfish of you would be to recognize that the dog doesn't enjoy/care for it and still insist it as an activity after you realize they REALLY don't want to be doing that. I know I've had to pass on a few tricks with my dog because she just was NOT enjoying doing them; and pass on teaching her to run along with me on a bike, because...well, she's not built for running. So, yeah. I think it's fine to hope and WANT to do things with your dog...but not push it when you realize they don't enjoy it. As long as you can accept them for who they are when you discover it, HOPING is not selfish. :D

​@@superstankydanky808 Walking is different from games or tricks. However, if your dog isn't enjoying walks - perhaps you should change how you take him for walks. Find something he does enjoy that meets his needs in another way. So, he doesn't like going out from point a to b? How about going to a field and playing frisbee? Or going to the beach and just snuffling around in the sand with no 'agenda' to go anywhere? As long as he gets his exercise and 'sniffy time', no one said you have to take them on a brisk walk for five miles. :) Ex. Sometimes summer days are just too warm to go for a walk. Dog STILL needs to get out, so for mine, I'll take her down by the river. We'll BOTH wade in and just spend an hour or two playing in the river. Throwing sticks, finding rocks, playing proximity games while in the water, digging on the shore, etc. We don't GO anywhere much, but by the time we're done, she's tired, happy and reasonably cool. All needs met, adapted for the situation. Right now, we have the opposite issue. It's too COLD to leave the house. Even going out to the yard is cause for frozen feet and it's hard to get her to go out at all. So, we have to stay in. But there's games of fetch, find it, hide and seek and - again - proximity games and a scratchboard to play with and by the time we're done, she's happy and reasonably tired. (Not as good as going outside, but better than frozen feet and lungs!) So, yeah, just adapt and alter your approach until your dog is getting what they need and they're enjoying it. Also, look at WHY your dog isn't enjoying his walks. Has something happened to scare him? Are you going too fast? Alter your approach and show him that it can be FUN.

Hello Zak, we’ve been watching you train several dogs lately, I leave you on the tv in hopes that our new rescue Great Dane will be desensitized with all the dog activity, he pays attention from time to time. Unfortunately he is so strong, 3 yrs old, that I am unable to walk him, he was doing so-so with my husband but just recently has started acting up (more than even before), i have a ordered a special collar, I know you’re not a fan, but even my husband was unable to control him while on a walk, whenever he sees a dog, a person. Mostly other dogs, he just goes nuts. Like the one you trained, sorry I forget his name, the pitbull you guys fostered and then found a home for…the first time I took him out on a walk he about broke my wrists…in the yard it can get almost as crazy, although he is getting better there. Im just wondering if you do any type of in home training? Or working with my husband. He has just told me he cannot deal with him, Leo anymore, walking him is too much of a chore and he is not comfortable. So I thought id reach out in hopes we wont have to rehome this lovable in home giant. Thank you, Nancy Ravesloot

Your fur baby is beautiful! I have a border collie too. She’s incredibly sweet smart and a fast learner. But she keeps aggressively herding my grandchildren. jmvmike I would advise keeping your BC on a short leash around them for a few months. Get her used to not being able to herd them but interacting with them still and she may learn the new habit of behaving like she’s on leash even when she’s off leash.

You could keep him in a crate at first (if hes crate trained) and slowly taking him out for short periods of time and as soon as he starts misbehaving isolate him (NOT in the crate because that should be a pleasant experience for the dog...)

Quick question Zak: As a biker I come across a lot of dogs that bark at me or want to chase me. I understand where dogs are coming from, but it is sometimes scary as a biker. As a dog owner, would you train for this specifically and set your friends up for a training session? Otherwise, how do you come across enough natural training situations to show your dog what you want from it when bikers ride by?

Sabine Wimmer go to a bike path and walk it and practice the behavior u prefer. My dog auto-downs when a biker goes by unless instructed otherwise. When he was a pup (he’s 1 year now) I asked a few bikers what they prefer and they are the least apprehensive that the dog will come after them if it is laying down. I bike with my dog so this is very important to me to have in my toolbox to keep me, my dog, and the other bikers feeling safe 👍

Question. I have been asked to train or the basics of training two puppies. I have gotten them both to learn SOME THINGS at the SAME time. This has not been an easy task, working with both at the same time. I have tried to work with them one on one. One I can keep the attention to but at times gets distracted by her litter mates whines and cry's, and barks. But should I work with her brother first she will be quiet and not be too much of a distraction. He is the dominate pup of the two. What can be done to stop his seperation behavior so the training can move forward with just "one on one"?

Hi Zak, I have a 5 1/2 month old Australian Shepard purebred. She’s super smart and playful, and while she’s always willing and eager to learn new tricks some things just done Stick. She’s had a biting problem for months now and we just seem to be not doing something right in stopping her, also, our neighbors have a very mean/aggressive dog who has tried to attack her twice (they’re not very good owners), and she’s now scared of all other dogs, going as far to growl at them, what should I do to combat this? Inertia is such a sweet and beautiful dog but lord she could be behaving MUCH better in public with different training. I believe that Zak might try in obedience but he’s a trick trainer and is doing MANYYY things incorrectly. Obedience takes a much different approach that he doesn’t have. When I first got my Aussie, I tried out Zak George’s puppy training, and lord can I say that the first few months with her were a challenge. As soon as I switched my training regimen and style I saw rapid improvement that I wouldn’t have seen if I stuck to his training. Now she’s no older than Inertia and twice as well behaved in public and in general. (I’m 14 btw) Another thing-He talks about being flexible with how your dogs react to things, yes I agree with that you need to be prepared, but he always sets Inertia up for failure instead of success, no matter what he says. He also baby’s her to no end. I agree that you need to protect your dog to a certain degree, but they’re dogs, they’re much tougher and braver than he lets on or let’s his own dog be. He also doesn’t correct her when she moves out of position. He pays more attention to the camera and advertising than he does to the actual training and his dogs well-being. In this comment I don’t mean offense to anyone or Zak, it’s just my opinion and my VERY different way of viewing dog training.

That is just not true, good e collar trainers don’t use the exollar to force anything now a days, what they actually do is teach low level e collar stimulus to be a marker, you are the exact type of person I want reading this because you are really misnjnderstood about new ecollar training methods. I get it I wouldn’t ever let a escape avoidance trainer touch my dog with not only tools but just in general, but that doesn’t mean that I won’t look for better information about the tools, because if you look, there really is good information and good methods revolving them. I repeat, what I’m talking about is trainers that don’t use the ecollar to force behaviors, but rather teach behaviors. Nowone has to use any tool they don’t want, but at least have a good understanding of current information on the tools before you start accusing me of “forcing” a dog to do anything.
