I was a preschool toddler teacher for 5 years. I have discovered that training a dog is very VERY similar to teaching a toddler. Positive reinforcement (positive decipline is what we say in the classroom) and patience are always the key to successful training/teaching.

Love this 😍 When I first met Zak, I asked him how to know what to do in any situation where I had no idea how to respond to what my dog was doing... He told me, “Imagine your dog was a toddler, what would you do?” and I was like 🤯 Of course he went on to explain that dogs are different than toddlers in many ways, but it’s such a great place to start when I feel like I don’t have a clue what to do with my dog. It’s been so helpful!!

@@bhavinisharma4776 Well it took about 4 months for my standard poodle. He still barks at dogs. In one of Zaks videos he says to try and keep your dogs attention on you. This series is so useful! We adopted a fully grown completely untrained reactive rottie a few years ago. Talk about challenge! This video is what we needed when we first got him because even though he is better now, at the beginning all training videos were not very helpful because they had much less stubborn and low energy dogs compared to ours! If you're fine with your dog getting on furniture, please do yourself a favor and teach them they only can get up there if you invite them. It makes it so much easier when you're visiting friends or family where they don't like it, if they're used to needing permission. I did this way too late and had to train for weeks to make it reliable.
@lilymasters7083 жыл бұрын
I just taught my dog to get 'off' the furniture. We didnt need to teach him to stay off of it because he was never able to get on it. After he learned more manners and matured a bit, we started letting him on the furniture, and he still reliably gets off. 'Off' is probably the most reliable command that he will do for some unknown reason.
@kylasbibi3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. That also goes for dogs coming into your personal space when not invited. We should not give in to their whining or wanting attention as that also encourages more whining to get attention. Kinda like the baby always crying to get attention.

@@kylasbibi Well, my dog tells me she needs a walk, water or food by sitting down in front of me, or licking my hand. I also don't mind her to come ask for a petting, as long as she accepts it's not always happening. Whining for it is always a bad thing, but other than that it's a case by case basis if you ask me.
@kylasbibi3 жыл бұрын
@@Flippokid if that works for you. That’s fine. However, here we eliminated that by having a scheduled time when Luna eats, checking her water bowl at intervals and having a scheduled time to walk. I’ve been watching quite a few dog training videos but Zak and Moira popped up on my feed last night. Ive been binge watching how he is making that bind/connection. I have a young German shepherd male who I’ve been training to be my Psychiatric service dog. He’s 16 m old now and has been super amazing until recently. As he matures he’s taking on that GSD protective stance and is becoming dog reactive which is NOT acceptable behaviour. In the beginning I called him a Jack-alope. He would bounce from couch to couch 😱. Same with our walks. He’d hit the end of the leash and then go the opposite direction 🤯. He now walks so perfectly and beautifully by my side. Never pulls. No tension on the leash in public. People admire how well behaved he is… until recently 😞. He has become dog reactive. His stance changes. Hackles go up. Low moans begin. I have to immediately change direction. Thank you Zak, you are really helping to teach me how to deal with this. I realize his maturity level has a lot to do with it. He was a rescue and was fixed early at 6m. He is now reaching maturity. He is 98lbs already but is still growing. My last male was 123lbs and I could take him anywhere!! ❤️. Absolutely no dog reaction 😊. I totally resonate with your methods of training over any others I’ve seen. 🥰

This is a dream dog in the making. If I lived in the US I would adopt her in a second, even from day one. This GSD reminds me so much of my own especially when she was young (Shiva is about nine years old now,). When I got Shiva she was destroying everything she could get her jaws on (hence her name). Barked, lunged and jumping at dogs and humans in a playful and exciting manner. But she was so willing to work and after about a month all the destructive behaviour stopped. Her energy and drive shifted to working for me instead of reacting to everything around her. You can do this Zak. With your patience, very clear body language and understanding of what is reasonable to demand of her, this can succeed in 14 days. This is a very promising series. Good luck with Moira! Something I found helpful when I was crate training my dog was to tell her to go down when I was preparing her food, which meant to go lay down in a certain spot, and then I would walk to her crate, and say, "Crate!" and she was supposed to go and sit in her crate until I had put in her food and told her free. It took a lot of work to teach her, but it was definitely worth it because it reflects something positive, like being fed, on something that the dog might not like, in this case, the crate. We have a female German shepherd, and she used to act just like this when we got her. The pulling, biting and chewing on people and clothes, and losing her mind when she sees dogs and birds. She looks just like a slightly smaller version of Moira, and it is SO adorable!

He loves food, which is great for training, but I need to work on upgrading his knowledge of a basic "leave it" to being able to walk over fresh chicken or other highly tempting foods.This episode is showing me that, yes, it might take a while, but step by step, it can be done. Thank you for this series! I am loving it!

How many hours do you train Moira per day? And when is the next episode coming out? Two of my favorite series of yours are this and inertia's ❤

Im so glad you are making these videos with this kind of dog because I watch your videos to help my own dog and like she acts like Moira. She is about 8-9 months as well and literally acts the same. She also like to talk back as well.

I have the same problem with my black and red german shepherd puppy but she gets better and better she is 6 months old, it's not easy at all for me because I'm not a dog trainer, but your method is good I'll try it, thanks a lot 😊 you are the best

I absolutely love this series. You can really learn a lot especially from a dog like Moira where everything needs to be done perfectly to make it work. Thanks a lot Zak!

Love this series. She reminds me of my own dog. He’s incredibly smart and can learn just about anything, but can be high energy at times, especially around distractions like other dogs/people. I’m always working on training it out of him so I appreciate seeing a dog like this, even though my dog isn’t quite at her level of excitement 😅

You are so good and patient. My doxie has resource guarding and I do not know what to do anymore...

Start with something of low value to her, and then add higher value treats. Work your way up to being able to take it from her and then give it back like Zak did a couple times.
@juleslaurence67903 жыл бұрын
@@Flippokid I am most certainly going to give that a try I am just so scared of being bitten!
@sagasutinen46943 жыл бұрын
@@juleslaurence6790 I would go the route of training wait when giving the food and leave it, so they will leave the food alone, use a leash at first and even a muzle if needed, someone else can hold the dog while you take the food or toy away, also "trading" with them is a good way of getting them to leave what you want alone. Give them something else they like so you can take away the resource they are guarding :)

@@sagasutinen4694 Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me!! I will try this!
@elenacodanunziante73753 жыл бұрын
@@juleslaurence6790 usually dogs show other signs of resource guarding before snapping/biting: freezing, chewing faster, staring at you without turning their head.(whale eyes), growling etc. Stop before they show these signs, and work your way closer and closer. If your dog shows any of these signs, it's probably because you are going too fast and need to slow down. Take your time and be patient, go slower than you think you need to. It's easy to do things wrong and make it worse, your dog should not be feeling uncomfortable about your presence when training

I love this series, learning a lot of good training tips for my lab/shepherd (and who knows what else) 21/2 year old dog. This series is one of the most realistic training videos I have seen. I very much appreciate you showing miscues instead of everything being perfect and including how to turn miscues into positive training exercises

THANK YOU ! THANK YOU !! FOR TALKING ABOUT THE CRATE!! IT IS CONFINEMENT DISORDER WITH GERMAN SHEPHERDS!! THIS BREED DOSE NOT BELONG IN A CRATE FOR HOURS AND HOURS ! SO MANY PEOPLE THINK FIRST THING IS THAT A GSD HAS TO BOND WITH THE CRATE .THEY NEED TO BOND AND TRAIN WITH YOU NOT A CAGE.

My chocolate lab is 7months old, I learned a lot from this channle and thanks to that, she is a pretty well mannered, obediant dog. Although not perfect, she still jumps on new people and gets distracted by dogs, loose leash walking is getting there. But she is super smart!

I’m very grateful for your channel, it shows the reality and real expectations and the time and effort it takes. So many channels on KZbin make it seem like in minutes you can have the perfect dog. It makes me feel like I’m doing something wrong or my dog is broken. I had a bad morning with my 18 month old hound mix on our walk. It broke my confidence I had in my dog and in hindsight it shouldn’t have, no one or nothing is perfect. Great videos sir keep up the hard work.

Loving this series soooooo much!!! I had the same issues training my rescue dog with lie down, took her a few weeks to even let me lure her into the position at all! She’s better with it now, but still won’t hold it or stay in a down if I ask her to.

As an owner of a high energy puppy who in a few short months is going to weigh more than I do, leash training and puppy biting has been my biggest struggle. She’s already jammed my finger once from pulling. I’m scared to think of what could happen if I can’t get reliable leash behavior soon, and this series has been SO helpful for me. If you ever wanted to dive into service dog training, I’d absolutely love to see your perspective on it!
